Timeout for Leadership

Rick Torsen explains why people lose motivation: no clear vision, purpose, or direction. He walks through three steps to find it again: write down your goal, measure what failure costs and success gains, then rate your motivation on a 1-10 scale.

Welcome back to the final episode on the power of Motivation. As I share how to identify and tap into your motivation so you won't fall into the traps that steal your motivation. Now let me give you three really quick reasons why we might lose motivation. The first one is we lack of vision. That's our where, where are we headed? Remember I talked about our destination. If it's not clear, our objective isn't clear and we lack that clarity of vision, we're going to lose motivation because that target keeps moving. The second thing is, is a lack of purpose. That's my why. If I don't understand why I'm heading in that direction, why I want to go there, I'm going to lose motivation and I'm going to chase the next thing that hits my emotions or takes my attention. And the third thing is we have a lack of a clear direction. That's my how we don't know how to get there. We might understand our vision and our purpose, but we really haven't thought through the stages and the process of to take us to that destination. So here's one thing I know. If it's important to you, you're going to find a way. If not, you're going to find an excuse. I think Ryan Blair said that. So if you want to reach your destination, you have got to identify and tap into your motivation. As we close, let me give you some real practical ways that you can do this, things that will help you in defining that motivation and moving towards your destination. The first one is list a goal, an objective, a destination. Where is it you're trying to go? What is it you're trying to accomplish or achieve? The clearer you list that destination or that objective, the greater opportunity you have to accomplish it. Once you have that destination and it's clear the objective that you're after, ask yourself a question. If you fail to achieve the desired goal or objective, if you fail to reach that destination, what's it going to cost you? This is how we tap into motivation. What's the cost to you, your future, your family, your friendships, your team, your job? This has to be real. It has to be tangible. We have to feel it. It has to elicit an emotion. If the cost of not reaching our destination is, oh well, we'll never reach that destination. If we do, it's just by chance. But if the cost has an emotion tied to it, a feeling, something that we're going to lose if we don't, how it's going to impact us, our family, our relationships or our business. The chance of us getting there is much greater because the motivation is real and it taps an emotion. Now, there's a second question I want you to ask once you've defined your destination clearly, and that's this. If you achieve the desired goal, you reach your destination, you accomplish the objective. What will you gain? Remember, the first question is, what will it cost you if you don't? Now you need to tap into what will you gain if you do? What will the result be? The fruit Be the reward? Be the accomplishment with your job, your family, your relationship? Again, tangible has to be real, has to elicit an emotion. If it doesn't, you're not going to be motivated. And your motivation isn't going to be strong enough to see you through the difficult times. So you have to ask yourself a question. What's the cost if I don't? What's the benefit of the fruit if I do? Make it real and tangible. This is how we tap into motivation that's going to drive us to reach our destination. Now, based on those answers and the clarity of your vision, rank your motivation on a scale of 1 to 10. If your motivation is an 8 or higher, I'm going to challenge you that you are probably not going to accomplish the objective. Or if you do, it's going to take a whole lot longer than it should have. So, my friends, anything we want to accomplish, anywhere we want to go, whatever our destination, our roadmap to significance in our life, it's going to require a clear definition of where we're going, an honest assessment of where we are. But it means nothing if we don't tap into our motivation. Motivation is key.
