Why 'Normal' Is The Most Dangerous Word in Your Life

Rick Torrison argues that calling something "normal" locks you into limiting beliefs you inherited rather than chose. He shares client stories and a framework to rewrite these beliefs: I will, I can, I am.

Normal. It might be the most dangerous word in your life. What if the life you're calling normal, what if it's actually the ceiling you've agreed to live under? You see, a few months ago, I sat with a leader. He was sharp, successful, outwardly thriving. But he looked at me and he said this. He said, rick, I don't feel stuck. I feel trapped. And what's worse is I built the trap myself. That moment, it reminded me of something I say often. See, the most dangerous beliefs are the ones we stop questioning. And for many of us, those beliefs are hiding in plain sight. They're under the label of what we call normal. Now, here's what I've learned after 25 years of coaching leaders. Most people are living in systems they never stop to question. See, we normalize dysfunction, we normalize limitations, we normalize struggle, and we just call it life. That's just how it is. But what if that normal is the exact thing that's holding you back from the future that you were born and created for? Today, I want to help you expose those beliefs. Not just to see them, but to confront them, reframe them, and rewrite them. Because you weren't created to live confined. You were born limitless. Are you ready? Let's dive in. So in my book, Born Limitless, I wrote this. The most dangerous beliefs are the ones that have become so familiar you don't even recognize them anymore. That's what normal does. It becomes the lid that keeps us in jobs we hate, relationships we tolerate, and patterns we're too exhausted to question. Years ago, I realized I was chasing a definition of success that wasn't even mine. It was rooted in the pain, in the need to prove myself, in the belief that I had to earn love and respect, but that normal wasn't truth and it wasn't freedom. My question for you. What if the normal you're living under was never meant to be your normal? It is time for you to challenge your normal. Every time you say something like, I can't stop and ask who says when, you catch yourself thinking that's just the way it is. Ask according to who. And when you feel stuck, ask what story am I agreeing with right now? With those questions down, they are the first step to challenging your normal. Now remember, familiar doesn't mean true and normal. It doesn't mean aligned. You were never meant to live beneath a ceiling. You were born to break through it. Every limiting belief has a backstory, a moment where it was formed. Once you notice the pattern, it's time to Dig into the story behind it again. In my book, I talk about how I used to believe I had to earn my worth. That came from years of abandonment, abuse, and rejection. I internalized the lie that I had to prove myself to be accepted. And this belief, well, it became my normal. Now, here's the truth. Your story should inform you and refine you, but never define you. So let's reframe. Behind every belief you've been living out, there's a moment that it was formed. Maybe it was a survival situation, a painful season, a voice you trusted. That's where the false narrative took root. But now you get to rewrite it. So ask yourself, when did I first start believing this? And how did it help me back then? And how is it holding me back now? You see, I had a client, and that client believed that he couldn't trust anyone to do it right but himself. The belief was crushing him and his team. It was exhausting their leadership. And we traced it back to a childhood moment, being the oldest child, carrying the weight for everyone else in their family. That mindset helped them to survive back then. But here's the truth. Here's the reality now. It was actually costing them everything. Once they recognized the narrative that they had been telling themselves, we could then rewrite the script, change the narrative. Here's where the shift happens. You can't live a limitless life on a foundation of limiting beliefs. Let me say that again. You can't live a limitless life on the foundation of limiting beliefs. It's time to make new declarations. In my book, Born Limitless, I walk you through a declaration framework that actually changed my life. It's built around three powerful declarations that I repeat often. Are you ready for them? I will. I can. And I am. I will. This is your commitment to take a different step. I can. This is your belief that a new future is possible. And. And then I am. This is all about your identity that you're speaking out loud now. Here's. Here's one of my actual declarations that I make often. I will lead with confidence, from purpose. I can build from peace, not pressure. And the final one. I'm a person of faith. And I often say this. I'm a son of God, called, chosen, and equipped. Now, I want to give you three declarations that you can start with if you choose. Here you go. I will no longer shrink to fit old definitions. I can lead a team without carrying it all myself. I am confident, called, and a capable leader. See, this is where you change your story. Your narrative. Now, let me tell you, when I started writing these declarations and declaring them out loud, what happened was, is my mindset, it began to shift. It wasn't overnight, but over time, my internal language began to reflect who God says I am, not just who life trained me to be. I believe words shape worlds. And your future, it responds to your voice. I believe what you speak, it shapes what you actually see. And what you declare builds the world you live in. So speak it, write it, live it. And here's the truth. Most people, they're reacting to life. They don't fail because they lack an ability. We typically fail because we live in a reactive world, not with intentionality. You see limitless leaders. They're the ones who are willing to challenge normal, live with intention by design. That means every week you check in with questions like what kind of leader do I want to be? Where am I still believing? Small. And what would I do this week if I truly believed I was born limitless? See, when I started asking those questions, my entire life shifted. Especially when I stopped chasing success and started living from my identity in Christ. You see, identity changes everything. Because when you know who you are, here's the thing, you stop managing your image and you start multiplying your impact. You're not created to earn your way to purpose. You were created on purpose, for purpose. Now here's your call to action. And this is what I believe and know. You weren't created to do this alone. My life has always been surrounded by people who are running in the direction I'm running, usually a little further ahead. They're for me and want the best for me. They push me and call me forward, never allowing me to settle. They pick me up when I stumble and remind me who I am. We all need a community like that, don't we? That's why I created the Living Limitless app and the Living Limitless Leadership Community. It's a private Facebook community where we live life together. It's a space for growth minded leaders who are ready to rise above the noise and lead from alignment, authority and identity inside this community.
