South Africa's last exit before Venezuela. Let's stop pretending. South Africa is not struggling. South Africa is in managed decline. We're not on the brink of becoming another Venezuela. We're actually already halfway there. And the only thing stopping us from going full Caracas is the private sector dragging this country forward while the ANC actively sabotages it. And here's the uncomfortable truth that nobody in government is going to say out loud. This crisis, this slide, is not accidental. It's ideological, and it is deliberative. And it's entirely manmade by the ANC. They want this to become another Venezuela. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Sweden— yes, Sweden— stood pretty much where South Africa stands today. Had high interest rates, crippling unemployment, exploding public debt, capital flight, parastatals bleeding cash. Parastatals are state-owned enterprises bleeding cash. It had a bloated welfare state financed by borrowed money. And by 1993, Sweden's debt exceeded 70% of GDP, unemployment was over 10%, and investors were fleeing. Does this sound familiar? But Sweden did something radical. They actually admitted the truth. They realized their socialist experiment had failed. Not needed more time, not was poorly implemented, not was tried not properly. It failed, period. And they then did the unthinkable thing for a left-wing government. They actually changed direction. They actually had the courage to admit it wasn't working and change direction. What did they do? They floated their currency, they slashed their taxes, and they privatized their state-owned enterprises. Quickly and brutally. They opened their economy to capital instead of demonising it. And yes, the Swedish socialists once actually owned the national beer company. If that sounds ridiculous, it should, because it was. But unlike South Africa, Sweden had leaders with enough humility and intelligence to say, This doesn't work. Let's stop. As Milton Friedman famously said, one of the great mistakes is to judge policies by their intentions rather than by their results. Great quote. Sweden judged the results. South Africa just judges by slogans, by ridiculous moronic ANC slogans. Today, Sweden ranks amongst the topmost competitive economies in the world. They fund generous social programs with money they actually have. And they didn't abandon compassion. They actually funded it with capitalism, with free markets. And that is the model. That's the model. Not Venezuela, not Cuba. Not the ANC's revolutionary nonsense fantasy from 1972. The moronic ANC ideology that doesn't work. So let's talk about South Africa, okay? Unemployment, officially 32%, unofficially closer to 45%. Youth unemployment around 60%. That's not an economy, that's a social powder keg. And economic growth? ANC, your results, economic growth averaging under 1% for a decade, with population growth outpacing GDP growth. And that's not stagnation, that's regression. Eskom, well, we know the story, is over R400 billion in debt, produces less electricity than it did 15 years ago. Transnet, our rail network? Well, the ports ranked among the worst in the world for efficiency. What about crime? Over 75 murders a day, one of the highest violent crime rates in the world. And yet the ANC state's response is always the same: more control, more regulation, more ideology, and more excuses. So let's be brutally honest. About the root cause of this problem and the stagnation of South Africa. South Africa is not failing because of apartheid. Apartheid ended over 30 years ago. South Africa is failing because the ANC replaced one racist authoritarian system with another centralized, ideological, race-obsessed, anti-white, bureaucracy that punishes competence and rewards loyalty, expropriation without compensation, BEE, BBBEEE. These policies haven't empowered the poor. They've empowered a politically connected elite while driving away trillions in investment. Even Professor William Gumede, who's no right-wing extremist, he's just a sensible, highly intelligent human being, even he admitted that BEE has largely become a mechanism for elite enrichment rather than mass upliftment. Foreign direct investment doesn't fear South Africans. It fears policy uncertainty, racial gatekeeping, and confiscation risk. Capital is not racist, but capital is cowardly. It goes where it is safe, and understandably so. ANC has chased away investment and chased away foreign direct investment through its moronic policies. So what do we do? Not next year, not after the next ANC conference, Now, first, we need to sell off, privatise state-owned enterprise, not restructure, not turnaround, sell majority stakes or all of them and open them up to market discipline. Let private capital fund infrastructure instead of taxpayers funding incompetence and looting. Second, We need to end Eskom's monopoly immediately. We need to continue to license independent power producers without delay, and absorb excess labour where possible. And we need to accept reality: there is no energy sovereignty without competition. Third, stop strangling the economy with fear of inflation. South Africa's real threat today isn't inflation, it's deflation, stagnation, and capital starvation. We need to lower rates. We need to unleash infrastructure investment. Fourth, we need to abolish exchange controls. The perception alone scares investors away. They're not going to invest if they can't get their money out, and capital's got to flow freely in and out. Or it simply won't come in at all. And that's pretty obvious and it's pretty clear. Fifth, we need to fix labour laws. We're overregulated. At-will employment may sound harsh, but permanent unemployment is still harsher. Small businesses are terrified of hiring because firing is impossible. And that's not worker protection. That's job destruction. Cassati, are you listening? 6. We need to open South Africa to foreign talent and global talent. Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria are eating our lunch on this department. We export our skills and import excuses. 7. We need to kill EWC and race-based economic policies. We need to replace them with means-based empowerment, title deeds, and real ownership for the poor, not share deals for the connected. Number 8, we need to get serious about crime. We need civil policing. Speak to Mike Cretfall about his ideas there. We need zero tolerance and we need relentless prosecution. No economy's gonna grow while criminals run free. Number 9: Exploit our natural resources. "Guere!" We need to burn the coal, drill baby drill, and develop our oil and gas resources. Net-zero fantasies won't feed the poor or keep the lights on. Number 10: And let's stop being polite here. Number 10: We need to break the stranglehold of destructive unions, especially the nasty ones in education, the teachers' unions. When 80% of public schools are dysfunctional, someone's not looking after the children or defending the children. They're defending failure. And if these 10 reforms of mine happen, even partially, okay, even one after the other, not at the same time, the turnaround is going to be rapid. Capital is going to come back to South Africa. Jobs are going to follow, and the tax base would expand. Debt would come down. And that's not theory, that's history. Argentina is learning it right now, painfully but honestly. Javier Milei, libertad! So long-term, the priorities are obvious. These are the long-term: education that works, property rights for the poor, and healthcare grounded in reality, not fantasy. We need infrastructure that connects people to opportunities, not smart cities for politicians and politicians' cousins. And above all, we need leadership, real leadership that doesn't hide behind liberation credentials while the country burns. As one of my heroes, Margaret Thatcher, said, The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money. South Africa has run out. So let me end with this. South Africa does not need saving from colonialism. It doesn't need saving from capitalism. It needs saving from ideological arrogance and political cowardice. If we don't change direction now, we will not debate Venezuela as a warning. We will live it as a blueprint and something we followed. And history won't be kind. The ANC has failed black South Africans. It has failed white, coloured, and Indian South Africans. It has failed every South African. And the question is no longer whether change is needed. The only question left is how much pain must ordinary South Africans suffer before we finally admit the truth?
