Rob Moore and Kane explain how to actually get a pay rise: stop citing personal expenses and instead show measurable value. Document concrete ROI you've generated, propose specific revenue or cost savings targets, and ask for a percentage share of the gains. What's the best way for me to get a pay rise?
Well, before we even talk about that, we should talk about all the ridiculous ways to not get a pay rise that, that everyone thinks gets a pay rise. Basically, you should do the opposite of the bullshit you read on LinkedIn. There's so many people on LinkedIn playing the. The employed victim teach, trying to teach you how to get pay rises or to leave a company, you know, if they're not paying for you or looking after you, when in reality it's in your control. So the first way you don't get a pay rise ever. Oh, by the way, let me just set the scene. I have 100 staff, so I know I've been pitched to pay rise a thousand times. I've said yes a lot and no even more. So I know what works. In fact, you know what I'll do in this video? I will teach you how to pitch someone like me to guarantee that you get a pay rise. I could, with 90% accuracy guarantee anyone gets a pay rise with what I'll share, I could with 100% accuracy, guarantee that no one will get a fucking pay rise. If they say to me that the cost of living has gone up because the cost of living has gone up for me as well. And what people don't realize, and I want to do a piece of content on this, so maybe we will, but the business is God. Maybe the business owner is Jesus, but the business is God. And if I want to make money as the business owner, as you know, I own a lot of companies. You know, we do, we've done a quarter of a billion in sales. But if I forget that the business is God, I can't make any money because I've got to make the business money before I get paid. And so the problem right now is we have this massive divide between employee and employer. And no employee really wants to admit that actually the business is God. I mean, you could argue that the client is God, and I could argue a case for whether it's the business or the client, that's God. But if you're an employee and you want to get a pay rise, you have to make the business more money. And, and I don't care if your mortgage has gone up. And I don't say this well, actually, I do care. So from a humanitarian perspective, I am really sorry that inflation has gone up 30% since lockdown, which means your spending power is 30% less than it was in lockdown. Our spending power, that is what you can buy relatively is the lowest it's been since the Second World War. I am really sorry about that. I ran every Fucking Day on LinkedIn and Facebook. In fact, they shut me down on Facebook last month for 30 days. Gave me a bitch slap.
Not just a little slap, too much government talk.
Yeah. So I, and I rant about this every day. I'm trying to do a lot to change this, which most people who hate my content or criticize me, they're doing nothing. So from a humanitarian point of view, I really do care, and I'm sorry, and it's the same for me. But my job is to teach you to make money and do shit that works. So if you try and pitch me for a pay rise that your mortgage interest has gone up, or your food or your bills or your rent has gone up, how does that benefit me? And why should I care? I can pay you unlimited money if you help my business make unlimited money. But yes, the cost of living has gone up on you, but the cost of living has gone up on the business and probably even more. They just put National Insurance up. So people think, oh, but Rob, National Insurance only went up by 1.2%. No, it didn't. It went up by nearly 10% because people say it went up 1.2 to 15. No, no, no, no. 1.2 out of 13.8 is nearly 10%. And do you know what that means across 100 staff? 100 grand. So? So people don't acknowledge that the costs have gone up for the business. They just look at themselves. So anyway, I'll answer whatever you want about how not to ask for a pay rise and how to get a pay rise. I've got loads to say about this.
So, cost of living is gone up, rent's gone up. What other mistakes do people make, first of all, when approaching you?
Well, the main generic mistake they make is they tell you they want a pay rise, but because they want more money. And the excuse they often use is that their cost of living or their rent or their mortgage has gone up. So what you want to do is the opposite. You want to pitch to me or your boss or your manager how you can or have made the company more money and then pitch your share of that. That's the basic mistake people make. The second this is a no go for me, like, if anyone does this to me, I'm just like, leave. If they tell me they've found another job and it's paying more and now they're trying to play us off against each other. So you're Basically trying to blackmail me. That's how I feel when people do that. I would rather you say to me, look, Rob, I'm not happy with the money, I want to do a deal with you. If I can't do a deal with you, I'm going to have to look for another job. Like, you're honest, I respect you, you've given me a chance. If you then go and leave, well, that's my fucking fault. But if you come and say, I found another job, they're paying me 22 grand more, blah, blah, and you start to negotiate, go work for that.
Do you think that, do you think people will be worried to do that? Because let's say somebody approaches you and go, listen, can we strike a deal? If not, I've got no other choice but to leave. Do you think a lot of people will be worried to go, oh, maybe they're going to try and push me out now and put me on a performance plan and start doing these things. Because I've sort of floated the idea I want to leave?
Yeah, I've heard of people worry about that. But here's the thing, I'm never going to let a good person go. People get worried. This recent budget should warn you that your pension is not safe and secure and they're coming for your inheritance. Do you even know how much is in your pension or where your pension is invested? Add to this the recent inheritance tax grab on your pensions and the risk of a market crash. You probably didn't know this and I didn't until recently, but. But physical gold can be added to your pension pot. Gold is inheritance tax free and has grown 700% in the last 20 years. You probably know from my content I'm investing heavily in silver and gold and that's why I've partnered with Direct Bullion. Myself and Nigel Farage are brand ambassadors and Direct Bullion can help you with gold to protect and grow your pension. I buy my gold and silver from Direct bullion and I don't earn any money on any purchases of gold or silver if you buy direct from Direct Bullying. So if you go to robmore.directbullion.com you can get a great price on your silver and gold and you can get the Pension Gold Investing Guide completely for free. As you know, I don't do many strategic partnerships and when I do, I do them with people who are credible, who've been doing it a long time, who invested things that I invest into and gold and silver's going wild. I'm investing heavily in gold and silver. I and I recommend you check out robmore.directbullion.com all the time. You know, if you have to make some cost cuts, which every business has had to make since lockdown 2020, the first thing people think, is that going to be my job and are they going to push me out? Oh, I'm going to go on a performance plan. Here's the thing with a performance plan. I don't see it as pushing you out. I see it as improving your performance. Because it's called a performance plan. It's not called a push you out plan. So some of my staff go, oh, I'm on a performance plan. That means it's the first stage of them firing me. So I'm just going to quit so they don't fire me. No, no. It's actually designed to get you to improve. I don't want to let anyone go. It means I did a bad hire. It means if they're going to leave, they probably spent the last three to six months looking for a job. It means they've probably blagged a few days off getting interviews. It means I kind of didn't get a return on the recruitment fee. It means I've got to go now to the recruitment market. It could take three to six months to find someone else and I've to pay a 15% plus recruitment fee to find someone new and I got to spend six months onboarding them to get them good. Why do I want to lose anyone? I don't want to lose anyone. I don't want to fire anyone. People don't understand that.
Do you think people are more worried now that AI is becoming so prevalent?
Worried about what? Losing their job?
Yeah. Like, is it hard to ask for a pay rise if I think, oh, maybe AI could do that?
Well, I mean, they should be worried, but being worried about how good you are at your job should, should help you skill up and get better at your job. So I, I don't have any problem with anyone being worried. In fact, the opposite is comfortable. And if I have comfortable staff, well, you know, I don't like that. And you know, I'll go and shake them up. Comfort is the opposite of greatness. So I would say to anyone who's worried about AI, what are you going to do about it? Because what does worrying do all? Well, actually, it makes you more stressed. It makes you imagine a reality that's worse than it is. But worry without action is a distraction. Nothing actually happens. So take your worry of AI and work out how you can become indispensable. Right now we have a banking crisis, a potential global recession, billionaires selling all of their assets to be liquid to cash in on the crash, banks going bust and taxes going up. I'm also very excited to announce a brand new and long term partnership with Direct Bullion. This is not an ad or an affiliate link, this is a long term partnership. The owner of Direct Bullion has actually been a fan of my show for many years and myself and Nigel Farage have become the ambassadors for Direct Bullion. You can learn about how to invest in silver and gold from the people who I buy gold from and who mentor me on my silver and gold investing. You can also buy gold and silver in your pension, which is something that a lot of people don't know about. So to save me answering the thousands of questions I get about investing in silver and gold, simply go to robmore.directbullion.com so instead of going on LinkedIn and going yeah, fuck the employer, yeah, I want to work three days a week from home and get paid for five and don't contact me after office hours instead of jumping onto all that, right, what about you? Get good.
Ah, sounds like a lot of work.
Tell me what you did cuz you are the example of how to master A career. So tell everyone what you did from age 16.
All right? Age 16 used to serve you coffee at Costa. At Costa Coffee. And then, you know, we thought about them sponsoring us. But now we like Starbucks and dash a coffee shop. And that was pre university. I paid a lot of attention to you because Rob would come around one day in a Porsche Panamera Turbo S. Yes. Ferrari Testarossa, clearly, sometimes as a Range Rover. Must been a rough week for you those days. You know, it's a Lamborghini. Every day is supercar, Every day is supercarry. So it's like, well, what the fuck does this guy do? And we've had this conversation for.
Say it. Just fucking say it.
Some people thought you were a knob, right? And that's not because you were rude or anything like that. In fact, you tipped. You tipped better than anybody. It was because they were jealous and they just assumed or they were passing on whatever sort of hate or thoughts that they had. They were projecting. So as soon as I went through university, thought, okay, I don't want to do this. I message you immediately going, I've been following you for ages. I know about your businesses, I know about your podcast. Here's what I want to do. And that was a really good time because I think that's when sort of the podcast agency was just really sort of spinning up. You were all over the place podcasting and in all different cities most days. So, okay, well, we need to grow this. We need to look after customers, we need sales and marketing. So basically I just came in and did any jobs that needed doing. That then being around you a lot has made me very entrepreneurial, so I sort of wanted a bit of that for myself. So starting off as going, okay, well, how about if I go commission only instead of a salary? Because I knew there wouldn't be a cap. With a salary, there's always a bit of a cap because, well, if I'm on holiday, you've got to pay it. If I'm sick, you've got to pay it. There's national insurance, there's all these other.
Costs, and it's hard on a salary to out earn your manager. So whatever your manager's earnings, that's your next run. People don't understand that, but they're sort of false ceilings. Yeah, it's a really smart tip. I just want to jump in, you finish your story, please. But it's a really smart tip to go on minimum salary and maximum commission. You can never get more than your manager's salary. Why would Your manager sign off, you getting more salary than them. Yeah. And people don't understand this. It's a hidden ceiling I didn't think about. No, most people don't. Whereas if you go, look, I don't want much salary or I'll even take no salary, but you, you go on commission, you can earn more commission than your manager. So it's a very good way to speed up the process. It's also de. Risking it for me.
Yeah.
Because I have to pay your salary no matter. No matter what. So that's a risk to me. Whereas I only pay you commission if you earn money for the company.
Yeah. And normally if you've got a good manager or boss, they'll grab that and they'll give you an inflated commission because of lack of risk is like, well, you know, I want to incentivize you, but I also carry no risk if you do that. So that was sort of a win.
Win. Yeah. If I remember, you were getting sometimes 20% commission on some of the things you were selling.
Yeah.
Like, honestly, that was less than the fucking net profit margin. Yeah. But. So you obviously negotiated well.
Well, apparently so. So that worked really well. Then that got to the next level where we're at today, which is business partners, which I'm very grateful for. But it started as I used to serve you coffee. I. I was an employee. I slowly moved out of what felt like employment by going commission only. And then I know what, 18 months ago, something. We then became business partners, which is good.
So you four step processed it. You figured out who to go and work for, who was entrepreneurial. And that's really important because some people might sit here and go, yeah, this is all fine, Rob Cain, but my boss won't listen to me. I can never get a pay rise. My company just doesn't entertain this stuff. Maybe you're working in the wrong. Maybe you're working in the wrong organization. That is a thing. So number one, work for the right organization. I always say to people who are thinking about going to uni or starting their career, choose the boss as well as the company. Because if the boss is entrepreneurial, I'm an entrepreneur and I love entrepreneurial people and I love the hustle. So you're always going to get a road into me if you show that, because I wanted to be like that when I was younger and your age. So number one is you've got to get yourself in front of the right employer, the entrepreneur. Number two is you get yourself a job and you get your foot in the door and you get seen. And the best way to get seen is to, and to get a job is to take a low rung job just to get in or to not ask for a big salary but ask for more commission. Number three is you get that salary down to near zero and you get the commission up as much as possible. And then number four, you have no salary and you start in business together. And I would say most employers I know who are entrepreneurial because some are corporate, but the entrepreneurial employers, I reckon 80% of the entrepreneurs I know would do that. Why wouldn't?
Also there's a massive hack when the company's not too big because there's a lot of advice up, go work for an entrepreneur.
So I reckon under 20 million, let's just get. Because when you go up over 20 million you get into medium sized enterprise, you know, SME, small, medium. And 20 million is a medium sized enterprise. You've seen our growth and you know, when it got to 110, 115, it started to feel a bit corporate. We've got it just under a hundred. Just under 100. I know most of the names. As you know, I go and desk hop, I float around and sit with different people. So if you can get kind of under 20mil, under 100 staff, you're going to get a road into the employer.
Well, it's such a hack because when you did the charity boxing match, obviously you were training with a bunch of the sales guys, you guys, you took them on holiday. There was the push up challenge a few months ago where again a lot of the sales guys, some of the people in marketing, doing push ups every day, putting that in a WhatsApp group.
Yeah, I noticed you didn't get involved in that.
Oh yeah, I was away.
You don't want a nearly 50 year old man beating you. That's the problem.
We can do a challenge if you want.
I want to do a challenge. Are you calling me out?
Yeah.
Right, what's the challenge? Press up challenge.
Yeah, sure.
All right, what's the bet?
What did you do last time?
Well, we just did 100 a day.
Did you struggle?
All right, so I'll tell you what the bet is then. How long do you need to prepare yourself? No drugs. Drugs test. No drugs. How long do you need to prepare yourself for a press up challenge?
Oh, tomorrow.
But we've got to work up to it.
No, I'll start tomorrow.
You want to? Yeah, all right, you'll start tomorrow. But what's the, the end goal? Because I reckon the challenge is whoever can do the most press ups in one set. Okay, yeah, but how long do you need?
Yeah, fine.
So that is. So we've got basically two and a half months. And whoever can do the most press ups in one set. How much you putting on the table? Bag of sand? Grand. You bet me a grand. Oh.
That'S getting interesting.
Well, you've got an M4.
Yeah, yeah. Deal.
All right. But easy cash.
I want an external invigilator.
Yeah, agreed.
And they're counting the reps, so we.
Need to define what a rep is.
Full lock.
Yeah. So none of this. No, you narrow all the way down. So maybe chest or chin touches the floor all the way back up.
Correct.
So we'll def. We'll agree on the rep style. And none of this, you know, 32, wait five seconds, 33, wait 10 seconds. It's got to be fallout.
So the army allows you to pause at the top.
Well, the army makes you pause at the top because it's harder. Anyway, no one gives a on how to get a pay, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
All right. Completely distracted. All right. So with the smaller businesses, in terms of employees, you get more access to the entrepreneur. And I think a lot of people that are watching this content are probably very entrepreneurial, so you don't always have to start your own thing. I think that's a bit of a myth. It's. Oh, you know, go out there and you learn on the job site. You can do that. But the amount I've learned without having to spend the money on the mistakes. Just working.
Yeah, you just get free mentoring and free leveraging someone else's mistakes.
Pretty much.
Yeah.
And as you know, I've launched a second company this year which is supplementary to what we do with the podcast stuff. And it's been much easier because I wasn't at square zero.
And most of the lead you'll generate are through partnering with our company.
Exactly.
Yeah.
So it's.
People don't understand this because there's a. Like my friend Simon Squibb, you know, what's your dream? Everyone should start a business. Okay, well, your dream can end up being your nightmare if you turn your passion into your profession, but your passion isn't a business model, so that's kind of a bit dangerous. And also, what is it? 90 of businesses fail in year one, 90 of them fail in year three. I think we all know the stats, so that's actually. I mean, I am a champion of small business and entrepreneurship, and I say if you want to do it, do it. But if you want to de risk it, stage it, like, go and work for an entrepreneur, get two or three years working for them, then reduce the salary, increase the comms and, and then, and then end up partnering with them and you just take all the risk out, which is what you did.
It worked wonderfully.
Well done to you.
Thanks. And I'm about to take a grand out your pocket.
You underestimate this old bastard. I am a competitive.
I know.
You do know. All right, fine. So where were we? How to not get a pay rise. Tell me that your cost of living has gone up. Tell me that your mortgage has gone up. Tell me that it's your annual review. Tell me that inflation has gone up over 3%. Try and blackmail me that you're leaving. That is how not to get a pay rise. Here's how to guarantee a pay rise. Number one is tell me what you've done that's made the company money. I don't mind being told by, you know, hey, I did this and this and this and this. And it made the company X, Y and Z. And make it really clear because if I'm looking at all the things you've done and I'm like, shit, that made the company 120 grand and you're on 30 grand. Am I going to lose you over a three grand pay rise which is 10%. No way. I'm going to give you the 10% pay rise. So anyone watching and listening, there's nothing wrong in your journey of work. Just noting down, yeah, I did this for the company. Did this for the company. Did this for the company. Did this for the company. So that stage one, stage two is give me an ROI. So if you want a 10% pay rise, tell me. So let's say it's five grand. Tell me how you can make the company 50. Because if you can make the company 50 and you're asking for five, well, that's a no brainer. That's 10%. If I make a net profit of 20, we're halving the profit. Well, I'll have the profit with you if you can make me more profit. By the way, I'm so prepared to stand behind this that I will be sending this video to all of my staff to watch. I said in the open plan office, let's do an episode on how to get a pay rise. You know, all of my staff. I'm not hiding around going, oh, I don't want to tell my staff that in case they come and ask me for A pay rise. I want a hundred emails after this podcast and video with my staff asking for a pay rise. But I will be deleting the ones that say inflation, cost of living. Been here three years. You know, some people say, I've been here three years, I've been here five years. Well, I would say if you've been here three to five years and you haven't got a pay rise, you've done something wrong. And a lot of people think by virtue of being here for that long, they should get a pay rise. They would have got a pay rise if they were valuable. And sometimes people just become the furniture and in the end you just don't notice the furniture. So that's actually not selling me that you've been here a long time. Unless it's an admin type role. So some people might say, yeah, this is fine, Rob, but my role is an admin. My role is in events or finance or hr, where it's hard to measure what I can bring in terms of roi. So do the opposite. What do you save me? Like, my PA saves me so much money and time. So if you're in the finance department, you are perfectly placed to look at all of our numbers. Shit, we're spending too much on direct debits, you know, or we're, we're paying this company 20% too much in stationery, let's get a new stationary company. And you are perfectly positioned to. In fact, you know what? We practice what we preach. We have a policy in progressive. You could get paid between 5 and 20% of the saving you make the company. And that is, that is company wide and everyone knows it. We also pay 500 quid or more for a staff referral and we pay up to 20% of any extra money that our staff members can make for us. And we advertise that. We probably should advertise that more. We should probably say that every day. So I'm putting my money where my mouth is. I'm not just saying this, not just going to Write it on LinkedIn. I want 100 emails from my staff asking for pay rises. And I'm going to say yes to them all if they get a share of making the company more profit. Because remember, the business is God. Now, you make no money if the business makes no money. I make no money if the business makes no money. So there's no harm in thinking that the business is God and trying to find a way to make the business more money. Now, many people who are employed, who are staff members, are Way better positioned to come up with ideas to help the company make more money because they're on the coal face, you know, they're on the front line. Often the entrepreneur who's, you know, at the top of 100 staff is so removed, it's hard for them to come up with the ideas. So just look at what you do, look at what isn't working, look at what's costing money, look at what you could replace with AI and pitch it to your manager.
So you can reduce your salary and ask for increased commissions, you can increase revenue and therefore profit and take a share, or you can save the company money and then take a share of that. So really, you could increase how much you're getting paid multiple times in one year.
You could refer staff members and friends, you could refer staff members and friends and get paid. You could save the company money and get paid. You could make the company money and get paid. Are there any other ways to get paid? Referrals, cost savings, make money, get paid, get paid, get paid. Or you can go on LinkedIn and bitch.
Yeah, that one. The net profit is actually something I didn't consider because you. Well, you've made 50 grand. I want five grand. So that seems like quite a jump. Surely, you know, if I make you 20 grand, I can have five grand. But they don't think about the profit, they just think about the revenue.
Yeah, well, an employee may not know the net profit margin. I know the net profit margin and I'm prepared to pay, in my mind, up to half of it, because then it's a split. Now, there are certain things that make us a high net profit margin and certain things that make us a lower net profit margin. We've got multiple products and services and I know what has a high gross profit and a low gross profit and a high net profit and a low net profit. So if you want to get really clever, work out what makes the company a really high margin and then propose that and you're going to get a higher share. Job done. Anything else that needs to be said?
Have more money.
What, because your M4 repayments have gone up?
I've got to get a new tire on Friday, actually.
Yeah, you've got to pay some unexpected bills. You've got a wedding coming up, you've got an expensive holiday coming up. No, no, no.
What's your opinion when somebody says the industry average has gone up?
For my position right now, this is. I'm going to have to be a little bit more gentle with this because if I'm Underpaying salaries compared to the market, that's kind of my fault. And I've got to be very careful not to lose people. So I have got to go and look at the market. Here's one thing I will say to people who are looking at industry averages or salaries in the marketplace. I know a lot of employers are just advertising high salaries to try and draw people in. And then they often do a bit of a bait and switch or chip you down afterwards and then you go and work for them and then you're out in a year. And the challenge with what looks like a high salary, as soon as it gets hard, you are the highest risk. And I've seen this a lot post lockdown and people offering people to work three days a week and paying them five days a week salary, be very fucking careful because it can end up being too good to be true.
Yeah. My sister works in Waitrose in the head office and there's probably about 29 different levels of management and management. Management and managers and high salaries as well. Saying that seems so risky to me.
Yeah. Because as soon as they need to make a cut, they'll go for that middle management level.
Yeah. Gone. Salespeople, however, very safe. This is. This is something I don't think people talk enough about and maybe we should do more content about it. First of all, you will make more money in sales than any other industry. Fact, I gave up a law degree for sales. Well, I did the degree, but I gave up the career. And two, generally salespeople don't have a high salary, but they get commission. So you're going to earn more than anybody else. And people in the company might not like it because you earn too much and they think you're not worth it. And also it's just a transferable skill. If you then start a business or you are now a salesperson, if you're raising money, you're trying to get your first customers, you're selling well.
As you know, March 2020 lockdown happened. We had to let go of a lot of our staff, although in the end we brought most of them back under furlough and managed to keep most of them. But I took the salespeople and moved them over here and said to my board, we ain't touching those because they're the engine and they're driving the money. The next thing, like you said, is a salesperson on a low basic and a high commission is no risk to me. Like if I've got 100 grand salary, that's a risk. If I've got a 17 grand salary, but they earn 80 grand in, the rest is commission, the risk is 17 and if I go, I've got to make some cuts. Well, that's only 17 grand salary. I'm hardly saving any money. And the Mark Cuban says this, I love this. He says sales cures all. You can always sell your way out of a hole. So I will protect my sales guys at all costs. There's one thing he didn't say though, is marketing, because sales is converting the lead into cash, marketing is generating the lead in the first place. So I'm quite against university degrees because do you know you can go to University for three to five years, you can get yourself between 44 and 60 grand in debt and you can come out taking six to 12 months to get a job and, and starting salary 26 grand. They are the stats. I mean that, that doesn't add up to me. But if you've got a family that's pressuring you to go to university because some cultures do, or you really want to go to university, fuck everything else off and get a marketing degree. Yeah, like, because the business degrees, they're all theory blackboard business, not run by business owners. If you can do anything in my. If you can do anything at university, get a fucking marketing degree. Because marketing is persuasion, marketing is influence. You know, whether it's like behavioral style marketing or direct response marketing, that's the one degree you should get.
You heard it here first.
Amen. Right, I think we're done, aren't we? We are. So if anyone wants to pitch me a pay rise email offal. Step one, work out everything you've done for the company and put a pounds and pence dollars and cents ROI on it. Step two, propose to the company how you can make more money and the more you can make them. And they've got to believe this and you're going to take a share of that and you might request between 5 and 20% and if you keep getting a no go and find a company that will allow you to do that and you will get rich much, much quicker than saying that your mortgage has gone up and interest rates have gone up and need to be paid more because it's been three years since you got pay rise.
