Robert Lustig explains why people regain weight after dieting. The Pounds Lost study showed all diet types led to initial loss followed by regain, and participants with higher PFAS levels gained more weight back and experienced metabolic slowdown. Obesogens, environmental chemicals that disrupt hormones, may be driving the body to store fat.

Why diets fail in the pounds loss study was a two year randomized controlled trial where they looked at all these different diets against each other. What you can see is yeah there's a little bit of weight loss here but then they all gained weight at about the same rate irrespective all the way through that first year. And the question is why? Well within that pounds law study PFAS levels predicted greater weight gain and greater adiposity and greater decline in basal metabolic rate. Could this be one of the things that that's in our environment that's leading to these change bisogens, weight gain and all the things in the middle putting interfering with hormone signaling pathways in this that wasn't in this before because after all these hormone signaling pathways have a lot to do with the development and the growth of adipose tissue as I've shown you. Okay. And so then you end up with the fat storage and you end up with the weight gain.
