Robert Lustig (spoken in a YouTube lecture) asserts that four classes of substances in the modern food supply—fructose, trans fats, branched-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, valine), and alcohol—are metabolized similarly by the liver and thereby cause fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, and are associated with diabetes. He explains this by saying the liver is the primary site for energy metabolism for these substrates, that their metabolism is not insulin-regulated, and that mitochondrial overload leads to citrate export which fuels de novo lipogenesis and hepatic fat accumulation.
