Robert Lustig argues that diet and chemical obesogens both cause weight gain by disrupting cellular redox potential. Ultra-processed foods are particularly problematic because they're obesogenic and contain obesogens themselves, creating a dual mechanism for weight gain.

If you integrate all these together, the diet and obesogens basically act similarly because they alter redox potential. Two different mechanisms, but nonetheless alter redox potential. And it's the redox potential that changes how each of these cells function, leading to weight gain. So, basically, here's your diet, here's your obesogens, here's your interfering with hormone signaling, here's your Ross's, and here's your energy balance and your carbohydrate insulin model. So maybe they're all correct so that we don't have to have a fight between the two, but that they're all correct through this phenomenon here. Well, then that would give us a window into obesity prevention. We know that ultra processed food is obesogenic, and we also know that ultra processed food has obesogens in it.
