Robert Lustig, MD: Group A Strep Grows Better with Fructose Than Glucose
Robert Lustig reports that group A Streptococcus grows much better on fructose than glucose. In lab cultures, fructose and sucrose produced large growth effects while glucose alone did not. He suggests higher dietary fructose may increase strep colonization and potentially contribute to psychiatric disease.
