Robert Lustig argues obesity can't be solved by individual willpower alone. He frames it as a biochemical problem requiring societal intervention, comparing it to climate change and gun violence as issues that demand public health policy, not just personal responsibility.

While individual intervention for medical care is essential, societal intervention is also warranted that we're not going to be able to solve this by doing this one patient at a time. You have to do this one population at a time. And that is what public health is. That's why the talk is called personal responsibility or public health. So what I hope I've done is give you a reason for rethinking your belief system, not just about obesity, but about all medical problems and possibly even all societal ills, like climate change, like gun violence, like vaccination. Okay. That these are public health issues that need to be addressed in a public health context and not expect that individuals are going to be able to solve this for themselves, especially when they are biochemically driven. It's not possible.
