Dr. Ron Najafi explains why fructose is so common in nature: plants evolved to store and use it as their primary energy source, while animals, including single-celled ones like amoebae, don't store energy as fructose and can't use it that way.

Why is it so prevalent in nature, fruits and different things?
That's a very good question. Fructose is a holdover from our plant ancestors. Fructose is how our plants decided to store energy. We are animals, and there is no animal that stores energy as fructose. Not one. All the way down to the amoeba. There's no need for fructose for any energy need in an animal cell anywhere. This is one of the things that diverged plants from animals and one of the reasons they're plants, that doesn't mean they're not intelligent, it just means they're very different. Point is that it is very prevalent because, number one, it is an energy source for plants. They can use it for energy. We basically can't.
