Why I started Copyblogger #substack #shorts

In this short, Phil Powis (the speaker) recounts how a snowboarding accident that required brain surgery forced him to quit people‑management roles. Faced with a wife, a three‑year‑old daughter and a newborn son, he decided to focus on his strength: creating content. He founded Copyblogger in 2000 to teach aspiring professional bloggers the mistakes he made in 1998, especially the flawed reliance on Google AdWords and other ads (what he called “webmaster welfare”). He argued that the proper model is to first attract an audience and then sell products to that audience. After an initial period of low traffic, he discovered a method to capture attention, which sparked rapid growth. Within three years he launched three separate seven‑figure, no‑employee businesses built on the audience‑first content‑marketing model.
