213: Enjoying the LEAP!
10 Feb 2020 · 10 min
Sally Koering Zimney wraps up the LEAP series by distinguishing a leap from a jump: big, intentional risks taken with joy, not just fear. She argues that discomfort and uncertainty are part of the process, and urges listeners to use risk as a compass and publicly commit to their own leaps.

Hey Movers! It is our final week in the LEAP series. And as you know, one of the reasons why I chose the word LEAP for 2020 is because I am taking some big risks, some big leaps this year. And though being scared is definitely gonna be part of this journey, it is every day I'm like, "Whoo, what am I doing? Oh boy, here we go." But I don't want to hate the process and experience of leaping. Ultimately, I want to enjoy the leap. And I'm not jumping, I'm not just risking, I'm leaping. I want it to feel like a leap. And the reason I chose the word leap is because in leap there's this like push for more. There's like an added There's added oomph, so you can really fly. Like a jump, you could jump like a few inches off the ground, and that's called a jump, but a leap, man, a leap is big. A leap is like going for it. Yes, thinking bigger. So we're not jumping, we are leaping, okay? And at some point, I realize gravity takes over and this fall will ensue. But there is that moment of flying and freedom. But before the flying and freedom, there's that initial like, go and do. That's scary. Holy, that is scary, right? And then the fall, that could be scary. I could land on something really hard. That could, it could hurt. It could be really bad. So that part where you're flying and it's freedom and you're going for it, Like, yeah, of course, we're gonna enjoy that, but I wanna enjoy all of it, okay? And I have to tell you, people say all the time to me, like, "Well, I speak, but I don't like it. Ugh, I'm just trying to get through it." Well, come on, guys, let's not just get through it, okay? You gotta do it, you might as well enjoy it. Why are you making yourself miserable? There could be something awesome in this. And that is the attitude that I want to bring to my leap this year in 2020. Now I am not someone who's ever going to bungee jump. Like we're talking about leap, we're talking very metaphorically here, my friends, because there's no way that I will ever find myself like in New Zealand or something on one of those cranes that takes you up over My sister-in-law did this and I watched the video and I was just like, oh my gosh, you are insane. I don't wanna die like that. I cannot imagine. I do not understand. I am not wired that way. Now I am a 7 on the Enneagram and supposedly we like risk, but not risks like that. But there must be something in me that does like risk because here I am a speaking coach and I love the risk of speaking. I do. I remember my mom saying to me many years ago that she thought I was her bravest kid. I say that knowing I know at least one of my brothers listens to this podcast, so sorry, Jake. I don't— I mean, I was surprised when she said that. I thought, uh, why? I'm her bravest kid? I was like, really? I was like, "Why? How am I brave? Because I feel like kind of a scaredy cat sometimes." And she was like, "No, Sally, look at what you do. You're putting yourself out there. You audition for things. You meet new people with this kind of openness." And it just, it really meant a lot to me that she saw that and said that. And I thought, maybe I am brave. Honestly, I didn't really think of myself as brave because I enjoy those things. And it's not that they aren't sometimes scary for me. Speaking can be really scary for me, but I feel like they're worth it, and I somehow find enjoyment in them. And I want us to apply the same thing to our speaking, because speaking absolutely can and should push us into discomfort. It should be a little bit scary. But if we are doing the things we've talked about over the last few weeks in our— this Leap Series, if we are using risk as our compass, if we are moving through our failures with lightness and inviting our audience in to those experiences, if we are managing to enjoy what happens, despite what happens, to enjoy the ride, enjoy the leap, well, then that's a win, right? Because I am going to enjoy my leap this year. I don't know what is gonna happen. And there's— I'm probably gonna take like so many leaps. Every day I'm leaping. I'm just sort of like the year as a whole is this big leap because I am spending way too much time on it not to enjoy it. I do not want to leap successfully and then look back and realize I just missed the last year of my life along the way. No way. And I do not want to leap and fail— even worse— and then look back and realize I just missed the last year of my life. No way. I am living fully in the leap, and I want you to do that too. I really hope that is what you are going to do with me this year in 2020. Let's enjoy the leap. Leap movers, are you with me? I know some of you are. So if you are with me, I want you to head over to a post over on the inner webs, right? Wherever you can find This Moved Me and find me about this leap, right? You can see them on Instagram and LinkedIn, Facebook, blah, blah, blah. Tag This Moved Me and commit to the leap by commenting. On that post with something like, "I'm with you. Let's leap. I'm gonna leap." And I cannot wait to cheer you on along the way. Oh my gosh, if I could hug you guys through the microphone, I would. Grrr! There you go. Did you feel that? I really love to hug people. So let's just assume I'm hugging you. Okay, my movers, over the next month or so, maybe a few weeks, or maybe this is you're listening to this far into the future and none of this will make sense. But at this point in time, if you are listening to this around when it comes out over the next month, you're going to hear a lot about the big changes coming along at This Moved Me. Some really exciting news coming. So I really, I want you to be on the lookout. I want you to stay connected because I'm going to be sharing a lot more in the coming weeks. All right, that's it for me. It has— I really enjoyed this leap series. I cannot wait to leap with you, and I cannot wait for you to walk alongside me as I'm leaping, because we need each other in the leap, my friends. Like, I cannot take leaps without some encouragement and some support and some affirmation. I mean, I— we teach what we need to know. You guys have heard that, I'm sure you all know that. I, we teach what we need to know. So every time I'm struggling with something, I turn around and think, oh my gosh, my speakers are talking about the same thing. They are talking about all of this stuff. They are also needing a nudge and a push to take bigger leaps and make a bigger impact. So that's what it's all about for us this year, and let's do it together. Talk soon, movers. This moved me, and I hope you are being moved right now too. Bye-bye.
