218: Speaking in This New Virtual World
17 Mar 2020 · 14 min
In this solo podcast episode, Sally Z (Be Moved) addresses professional speakers during the early COVID‑19 shutdown. She acknowledges the sudden loss of income and live‑event opportunities, then announces a free webinar on Thursday, March 19 at 1 PM Central Time that will teach speakers how to present effectively in virtual formats (webinars, multi‑streaming, video messaging). She invites speakers to join via Crowdcast and promises to repeat the session. Sally also launches a community‑promotion initiative on Instagram (@bemovedspeaking), asking speakers to share slides, videos, or story tags so she can showcase their messages and build a collective “Be Moved speakers” directory. Throughout, she emphasizes authenticity, connection, and positivity, sharing personal anecdotes about coaching experiences and the importance of feeling loved and supported. She urges listeners to stay home, seek joy, and continue creating, framing the pandemic as a temporary challenge that can foster new creative opportunities. The episode blends practical resources with heartfelt encouragement and a strong call to community solidarity.

Hey movers, it's Sally Z with Be Moved. Let's go create some talks that will move this world. We're gonna talk with amazing speakers, share tips, tricks, resources, and we are going to be moved so that our audience can be moved. This moved me. What is moving Hello, my movers. Oh my gosh, I feel like we are stepping into such a different world every day. And so I just could not publish the other episode that I had scheduled for today because I I love you. I really do. I love speakers. I love speaking. And right now, this is not going to be news to anybody, but right now is kind of a difficult time. Understatement of the year. It's difficult on many, many levels. And if your business depends on you sharing a message and you are trying to get your voice out there more. A lot of that has been canceled or postponed. I talked to a friend of mine who's a speaker, and she said she's lost 4 months of income in the last 72 hours. That's a lot, and it's a big deal, and it's weighing on people, and it's all for good reason. I am on team stay at home. I am on the social distancing train, and I sincerely hope that you are too. We need to do this for each other, and you know that. And so I realized after just a few conversations with speakers who were struggling a little bit that I really want to help. I want to do something to help. And so I'm doing a few things. Number 1, I'm going to be doing a webinar free this Thursday. So that is— what is the date on that? Let me look at the calendar. I don't know. It's like the world is so wackadoodle. I don't know what day it is. So Thursday the 19th, I'm going to be doing a webinar about presenting virtually. Webinars, doing like multi-streaming, just doing more video messages, showing up on video, even meeting via video. How can we embrace this new platform. It's really not that new, but, um, so many people I talk to are not real comfortable on video, and I get it. I felt that way for a really long time. But, um, this is where we're gonna meet our audiences for the next few months, and so I would love to help us meet them there and discover connection there and still embrace all the same ideas that we need when we step out on stage, which are to connect with our audience, to bring our full authentic selves to the moment. We need that. They need that, especially now. And so we need to see this as instead of this platform that makes us feel sort of embarrassed and disconnected, we want to create We want it to feel as personal as possible, as connected as possible, as interactive, as engaging as possible, because this is where we're gonna meet our people. So I'm really excited to do something that I think will really help and that feels needed right now. So if you want to join me for that, or if you want to invite your team, like all of a sudden we're all doing things virtually, so we do want to do it well. We want to communicate well virtually. So I'd love for you to join me, and if you go to Crowdcast and you search up Sally Koering Zimney on Crowdcast, you will find me and Be Moved, and you'll see that we've got a workshop coming up on Thursday. I'll also include a link in the show notes so that you can go there and find it there as well. There's already been a huge response to it. I've been talking about it for about 4 days, and I gotta tell you, I don't know when I— what number I max out at on this, but I have a feeling it's gonna max out. So I want, I want to be helpful, and I want you to be there. So that's the first thing: webinar on Thursday about presenting virtually. I'm doing it at 1 PM Central Time. So keep that in mind. Okay, the second thing that I want to do is I want to help share your messages. Right now speakers are feeling a little cut off from this live experience that I talk about all the time and that I love so much, but we are just going to meet our audiences in a different way and I want to help you do that. So if on Instagram, I want you to find my new Instagram handle, which is @bemovedspeaking. @bemovedspeaking. Find my Instagram handle on there, and of course I'd love for you to follow me, but then post in your stories or send me a slide or something. Like, somehow get to me. If you post in your stories and tag me, obviously I'll see it, so that's a really efficient way to do it. But, but you could also just send it to me, and I will share out a little bit about you and a little bit about your message. So you can send me a video if you want. You can send me just a slide of like some information about you. Get creative, people. I'm totally open. And then I will share it out, and I'm gonna start essentially Be Moved speakers. I'm gonna start a little— I don't know what you call the like little things at the top where you can, you can save your stories. That's what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna collect all of them. And so as speakers, we can support each other. And then of course, when somebody is looking for an awesome speaker, they're going to go to my Be Moved speakers. Because if you are here, you're a mover and your intentions are absolutely in the right place and you are learning and growing. And in my mind, that's the kind of speaker I want at my event eventually when we have them again, or even doing it virtually, right? So Those are my two things that I want to do to help you. Number one, the webinar on Thursday, and I'll probably be repeating it at some point. So FYI, that's there. And number two, send me a little bit about you and your message. What do you want the world to know? What is the message that you are sharing? I want to get to know you, and I want to share you with the world. Okay, one time a few years ago, one of my speakers that I was coaching— we were actually doing virtual coaching— when I asked for feedback, because I give a lot of feedback, and then at the end I say, okay, so it's your turn, you give me feedback, what worked, what didn't— he gave me just the best compliment that I, I felt like just seen in a really powerful way. And that is, he said, "I felt loved by Sally in her feedback." And I just thought, "Oh man, I do love speakers. I really do." I love the courage that it takes. I love the potential and capacity of speakers. I love the risk-taking and how that transforms the audience and the speaker. I just think it's the coolest thing ever. I feel so honored to be able to do this work and so grateful, and I want to help. I want to lift us all up a little bit. And I'll end with this. My friend Tiffany is a life coach, and just being her friend, I get life coached all the time, and I'm so lucky to get life coached by her all of the times. She got on Facebook Live the other day and just said, "Who do you want to be in this? Who do you want to be?" Like, we still get to choose that. We get to choose how we are going to respond. To all of this. We get to decide who and how we are going to be. We don't get to decide a lot in this life, but we do get to decide that. And so I am choosing to take care. I am choosing to seek positivity and joy and to share that with people as much as I can. I'm choosing to stay home. I'm choosing to love up my people. I'm choosing to create an environment where I hope they can thrive despite being all stuck together in our house for 2 weeks, hopefully just 2 weeks. I am choosing to go on lots of walks and breathe fresh air and snuggle in and try and make the most out of this time together. And I am choosing to love my speakers even more. I am choosing to honor your words and your work and to hold you up and to help you get through. Because honestly it helps me too to feel connected and to be driven by my purpose at this time. So I love you, I really do. Please stay home, stay safe, find the joy and seek it out because it is It is there. It is there. Just look at Italy. There's going through a lot and finding the joy regardless. And I feel inspired by that. That has moved me. I can't, like, if I did a "this moved me" moment right now, I wouldn't know what to choose. I am so overwhelmed. I'm gonna try not to cry right now. I am so overwhelmed. By people's generosity and thoughtfulness and creativity. And they're like— I've just seen the most incredible acts of kindness and creativity happen in the last few days, and it is inspiring and beautiful and so needed. So please, my speakers, keep Creating, keep bringing your voice out into the world and let's meet our audiences in this new way. We can do it. We got this. This is a temporary thing. And I believe in that we're gonna discover some really beautiful things in this. I really think we are. I'm not happy about it. I'm really sad and it's scary, no doubt. But we are going to discover some beautiful things in this process of hungering in and digging deep and get creative. And I'm here to help. Okay, my friends, I love you. Stay safe, stay inside, stay home. Talk soon.
