235: The Journey Series - The Journey is the THERE
1 Jul 2020 · 12 min
In this solo episode of the "Journey" series, host Sally Z (Be Moved) frames the central premise that "the journey is the there," meaning the process itself is the destination. She reflects on recent personal experiences—particularly a demanding product launch that left her exhausted, dehydrated, and questioning her purpose—and describes how embracing the journey helped shift her mindset from relentless goal‑chasing to appreciating the path. Sally connects this insight to broader aspects of her life, including anti‑racist work, LGBTQ allyship, family roles, and entrepreneurship, noting that these parallel journeys reinforce each other. She observes that many speakers (and her Signature Talks Studio students) either embrace or resist the journey, often trying to shortcut to an imagined "there" that never truly arrives. To support listeners, she announces a nine‑episode series that will reshare past conversations, starting with Amina Brown on courage and voice, and offers a downloadable workbook (bmoove.com/journey) as a study guide for capturing insights and applying them to one’s own journey. The episode ends with a call to action to subscribe, engage on social media, and share what moves the audience.

Hello everybody. Hello movers. Hello humans of the world. Ah, it is a journey. It is a journey. And on today's episode, I'm going to talk a little bit about this exciting series that I am sharing with you to help us on the journey to wherever it is that we are going, because Here's the deal: the journey is the there. Does that make sense? I'm not sure. Let's figure it out. Hey movers, it's Sally Z with Be Moved. Let's go create some talks that will move this world. We're gonna talk with amazing speakers, share tips, tricks, resources, and we are We're going to be moved so that our audience can be moved. This moved me. What is moving you? Hey everybody. I am, as you probably know, I am jumping in with some amazing people over in the Signature Talks Studio these last few weeks, and even after that short of time that we've had together, what I can tell you is this: it is a journey, and each person is walking it in their own way. I am feeling this, and I'm sure you are too, so much right now, even outside of speaking. Like, right now it feels like such a journey to do all kinds of things, to become a better anti-racist, to be a better ally for my beloved LGBTQ people in my life, and to be a better wife, a better mom, a better friend, a better entrepreneur serving all of you. And maybe, maybe— I feel like I've had a moment in the last few weeks that maybe for the first time in a really long time, I am feeling okay with not being there yet, and I think it's because of all these journeys that I'm going on feel very, very parallel to each other. Now, don't get me wrong, there's a big part of me that just wants to be there already, and, and of course some of that is good because it gives us a direction in which to move and says, "That is the goal. That is the vision. That's where we're going." And especially as I dream big in my business and dream big for the world, I just want to be there. And I just want to succeed, right? Whatever that means. And the problem is that as I'm looking at that and feeling that and looking ahead and feeling like, "Oh my gosh." I feel like I have so far to go, that we have so far to go. I forget that I have come so far in many ways, and I'm just not really appreciating that right now because I've been so focused on where I'm not, and it's exhausting. Is exhausting. And it turns out that even when you're there— because I have gotten somewhere— so even when you get somewhere, you're not really there because I haven't enjoyed the getting there. I haven't enjoyed the path. Does that make sense? Because what I've come to in the last few weeks is that that that mindset is just not helpful. It's super human, but it's not helpful. It was like this moment during my launch a few weeks back, and I was just tired. I had sent like a gazillion— that is not a real number, but I had sent like a gazillion BombBomb videos and I had sent a bajillion emails. You, you probably got them, you know, and I just felt like I was crawling uphill and I just could not see the destination and the path. Was bumpy. And if we're going to keep going with this metaphor, I was dehydrated and desperate and really grumpy and scared. And my kids were like, "Mom, who even are you? We haven't seen you for 3 months." Not an actual quote, but that's pretty much it. And I just thought, "Ugh." And I was sitting in my backyard because I couldn't stand being in my office for one more moment and there were like 12 empty bubbly water cans in front of me and 3 empty coffee cups and a very full water bottle, which tells you something. And I just got this sinking gut, like, ugh. And I just thought, oh my gosh, I don't want to do it like this. This has got to change. This is what I want, right? This is, this launching, serving people in this way is what I want. And I better enjoy it because I don't want to live like this. So I decided, I decided I am going to enjoy this. I am going to enjoy the journey. And it doesn't mean it's going to be fun because I'm going to work hard. I'm going to show up and it's going to give it, give it my all and feel everything and struggle for sure. And, and have some fun, I hope. But Really, the journey is the there. That was my aha moment. The journey is the there, because I don't know really if I'll ever get there, and the there keeps changing and keeps being pushed out. And so I really want us to Soak up the journey and to recognize that it is, it is it. It is it. And as speakers, this is especially true. And I've seen it echoed in my students in the Signature Talk Studio as well, because people are coming to me in such different stages on their journey. Some of them are really embracing the path. They're really opening themselves up to learning and growing. And some people, and this is not just this group, but But many people over the years resist the journey. They want to rush to the end. They just want to bypass the journey part and just get there. But the reality is there is no there. It is a circular, constant iteration. It is a growth process. So even when we think we're done, we're not. So As I was thinking about this over the last few days and after the launch and just realizing I am just midway through everything, the journey is not even done. Even as far as I've come, there is still so much to learn and do. And that is it. I decided to offer up some of my all-time favorite favorite conversations over the past few years that have really embraced the journey, the parts that are hard, the parts that are exciting, the parts that even if we're on board with them, we've always got to keep working on because the journey is the there. And so this is the foundation of this series and The next 9 episodes, I think it's 9, I can't remember the number right now, mm-hmm, are conversations that I've had on this podcast that embrace a certain part of the journey. And I'm so excited to reshare them with you because my audience has grown a lot in the last few years and maybe you haven't heard these amazing conversations and my hope is that They help you step into the journey, embrace the journey, and remember that the journey is the there. Oh yeah. All right, my friends, that is it for me. You're going to be seeing these episodes come out a little more frequently over the next few weeks. So first up is the amazing Amina Brown. And Amina is gonna share with us her journey of embracing courage, really embracing her own voice. Oh, I love it. That's up next. Thanks, friends. This moved me. What is moving you?
