11 Oct 2021 · 16 min
Sally Koering Zimney outlines four mindsets entrepreneurs need to grow through speaking: claiming the identity of speaker, selling authentically, believing you're worthy of visibility, and treating preparation seriously. Most speakers struggle not from lack of skill but from limiting beliefs that hold them back.

You want to grow with speaking. Yes, of course you do, because it's powerful and it's awesome. But part of the reason why it is hard to do that is not because of your skills or all the other things that we sometimes think are why we haven't been able to grow with our speaking. Most likely you're not growing with your speaking because of your mindset.
Mm, I know.
So on the show today, I'm sharing with you 4 mindsets that you need if you want to grow your impact, your authority, and your revenue with speaking. So let's dive in.
Hey movers, it's Sally Koering Zimney with Be Moved.
Let's go create some talks that will move this world. We're going to talk with amazing speakers, share tips, tricks, resources, and we are going to be moved so that our audience can be moved. This moved me. What is moving you? Hey everybody, welcome back to the show. My name is Sally Koering Zimney. I am your speaker coach and I empower purpose-driven big-hearted entrepreneurs and coaches like you to leverage the power of speaking so that you can grow your impact, your authority, and your revenue in your business and move you from the burnout of the one-to-one into the freedom, the power, and the spotlight of the one-to-many. And P.S., we're gonna do it without sacrificing your authentic voice and story.
Whoop whoop!
Sounds pretty great. I know. Now I have an awesome show for you today, and I'm really excited to share it with you because it is a sneak peek into a training that I did over in the Emerging Speaker Society a few weeks ago. Now the ESS is an incredible group where we are pushing those entrepreneurs and coaches to the next stage in their speaking. In other words, they're doing some speaking, but maybe they haven't leveraged it the way that they want to. So in the group, we do lots of live trainings, inspiration, conversation, we share wins. It's an awesome group of people, I have to say. And I make sure that you have the tools that you need to step into the next stage in your speaking. Where we are at right now, we only have a day, one day left in this year's enrollment, the last enrollment of STS in 2021. So if you have on your list to speak on bigger stages, to really become the authority in your business, to make more money with your speaking, if you have on your list that you want to find another way to make money that is not dependent on the one-to-one because there's only one of you and we can burn out in that really fast. Take it from me. Then speaking is one of the revenue sources you need to build in your business. Many high-level entrepreneurs have speaking as a part of their revenue in their business for a reason, because it's powerful. It gives you credibility. It brings in great money. It brings in ideal clients. It's awesome. But that leaves the big question of how. Now, a lot of people feel like, oh my gosh, there's this big mystery around speaking, and I, I get it. So in STS, I offer you a step-by-step framework guide. I hold your hand all the way through the process of creating your own signature talk so that you can then turn around and scale it and share it with the world. Bringing you more money, more clients, and more freedom. One of the other awesome things about STS, if you don't know this already, is along with the step-by-step course, you also get coaching and community. And I think that that trio is really, really important. I am here for you to help you along the way, and so is this wonderful community of other STS students and STS alums. They are here to help cheer you on. It's a family. I just, I love my people. I love my speakers so much. So if you want in on the family, come join us in STS. It is open until 10:00 PM Central Time on October 14th. So if you are hearing this and there's still time, it's not too late. Come check it out at bemooved.com/join, because I'd love for you to come be a part of the STS family so I can cheer you on and get you out there. Oh, I cannot believe what some of my speakers have done in the last year. I'm just so excited for them. I'm so proud of them. They're doing big work and it's inspiring and you can do it too. All right, now let's get on to the show. These are 4 big mindsets.
So if you are struggling to grow, think about these 4 mindsets.
There might be something for you in this to help you level up in 2022.
We have 4 mindsets that we are going to be talking about today, and the first one is this: I am a speaker. Now, sometimes speaking can feel a little bit like this thing that we have to do, right? Something on our list, and the list is long because we are entrepreneurs and coaches and authors, and we've got a lot going on. We're trying to build the whole ecosystem of our business, and it can be super distracting. But until we can really place speaking at the center of our business and not let it be a distraction from our business, until we can do that, it's gonna be really hard to grow with your speaking. So one of the mindsets I want you to adopt is that you are a a speaker. A lot of people I work with are like, "Well, I speak, but I don't necessarily want to be a professional speaker. I want to build an ecosystem in my business so that I can serve my audience in lots of different ways. I want speaking to be a big part of it, but I'm not really a speaker." And that mindset is gonna get in the way of you really stepping into what is possible with speaking. So we want to shift from speaking being a disability distraction from your business, from everything else that you have to do, and we place it central in our business. Not that it has to be everything, but it has to move up your to-do list if you're really gonna grow with speaking. And it's a powerful tool if you lean into it. So, I am a speaker. That's mindset number 1. The second one is big. I can sell and be authentic. If you want to use speaking to grow, if you want to leverage, if you want to harness the power of speaking, you have to sell something. And a lot of people are like, "Ugh, I don't want to sell something. I just want to show up and like say important things and have a wow moment and move people." And I'm with you, but until we place speaking into our business, and let it be a part of a really powerful intentional funnel where we know my audience were here and then I'm gonna speak and then I want to move them here. Until you have that customer journey and that funnel figured out and you sell something at some point in that funnel, you are missing out on in your revenue and your audience. Selling is a way for me to serve my audience. So we gotta like work on whatever the selling baloney is that keeps us from really showing up out front and taking advantage of the opportunities that we have. Do not miss those opportunities. And so authenticity and selling. Bring them together, love them, find your way to do this by placing speaking in your business and really leveraging it as a part of your growth strategy. Otherwise, you're speaking and that's great and it might be powerful in the moment but it's not going to help you grow. And we want speaking to help us grow. So you're going to sell and be authentic. This third one, I am worthy of being seen. Now this might feel a little counterintuitive because if you are on the path to growing the speaking part of your business, then somewhere within you is a desire to be seen. And yet it trips us up sometimes. And that imposter syndrome comes up a lot for us as speakers. I don't care who you are, how excellent you are at what you do, this happens. We have questions. Can I really do this? Do I belong in this moment? And because speaking is vulnerable and risky and we have to leap before we feel ready, that is all part of it. We have to really find within in ourselves this worthiness of the space that you get to take up. Know your worthiness to be seen in what you have to offer, your stories, your insights, your perspective.
They matter.
And for you to take the risks that are required, the vulnerable, risky, personal steps To do that, we have to be grounded in our worthiness. And last but not least, this matters and is worth my time. Now, I just posted a reel yesterday. I don't know if you guys have met some of the characters that I'm bringing to life. We had Overly Polished Polly, we had Self-Doubting Cindy, And yesterday I shared with you winging it Wendy.
Now I got a lot of winging it Wendy in me.
And those times when I have not really invested in my business, my speaking part of my business, invested in the clarity of my content, in developing my skills and my stories, When that happens, I'm missing out on growth and impact. And so we have to, again, it's sort of prioritizing and putting speaking more towards the center of your business and higher up on the to-do list. Every opportunity you have in front of your audience is an opportunity. Now, not every opportunity is gonna get a big chunk of your time. We, we have to manage that. There are some things we you can wing it a little bit more, but there are moments where we, we don't show up as prepared as we need to be. There's an old idea that the people who are really, really good just wing it and they, they don't have to prepare a ton. Now, if you are giving the same content over and over and over again, or even similar content over and over and over again, your prep time gets smaller and smaller and smaller. Of course, that makes sense. So there's part of that that might be true, but how you get there is by investing your time and energy and intention and focus and saying, this matters. That doesn't just happen. Some people have some natural abilities and trust themselves more in the moment, but part of the reason I can wing things more is because I'm talking about things that I've been talking about for a long time. And so it's not the first time I'm talking about these ideas. If it's the first time you're talking about these ideas, you do not want your audience to get your rehearsal, your rough draft. Instead, you have to say, this matters and it's worth my time. This matters, it's worth my time. I am worthy of being seen. I get to take up space. Because my stories matter, my perspective matters, and I can be of help to my audience. I can serve them and love them in this way. I can sell to my audience and it is authentic and good. It is no less worthy or faded when you sell. We spend a lot of time just kind of waiting. Waiting for the magic to come to us. But no, really, you have to sell. You have to show up and solve people's problems with what you're selling. You can do that. That's marketing. That's selling. And finding a way to do it that feels right for you. And then owning the title of speaker. I am a speaker. This is a part of my business. It is not a distraction from my business. It is front and center. These are really powerful, and it's a journey, it's a process. It's not like a light switch. I'm gonna say these things and then voilà, I'm ready to grow in my speaking. All of this is cyclical, and there are times when we are feeling it and times when we aren't, but I want you to keep these 4 mindsets at the ready for yourself keep them visible for yourself. Whatever one trips you up, keeping it in front of you so that you can have the impact that is truly possible with speaking. Your audience is out there waiting for you to show up and play a bigger game. I'm here to push you on that, to get you to play the biggest game that you can with your speaking, because that's the way you're gonna have the Take a step back.
