28 Dec 2022 · 16 min
Sally Zimney argues that aspiring speakers must publicly claim the title to build credibility and opportunity. Add "Speaker" to your social media bios and email signature, then create a dedicated speaker page on your website with a bio, photos, and testimonials. The barrier is belief, not skill.

Hey movers, it's Sally Z with Be Moved. Let's go create some talks that will move this world. We're going to talk with amazing speakers, share tips, tricks, resources, and we are going to be moved so that our audience can be moved. This moved me. What is moving You. Today we are talking about how to declare to the world that you are a speaker. Because here's the deal, I've been having so many amazing conversations with people on these clarity calls. If you haven't had a clarity call with me, let, let me know, reach out. Send me a little message because they are a really impactful way to figure out what is next for you. And one of the first things I ask in these clarity calls is, tell me about the dream. One of my questions is, what's the dream? Like, tell me what the vision is for yourself as a speaker. And people have told me these beautiful dreams, including things like, I wanna speak and bring more people into my coaching business. I wanna start a podcast. I want to take this book that I'm working on and build a platform. I wanna be on bigger stages. I want to be really cemented as a go-to in my industry. I want to be seen as an authority. I wanna make more money with my speaking. And I say, awesome. So how's it going right now? Right? That's a beautiful dream. The dreams are so incredible and they're beautiful. How is it going right now? And these amazing people say, well, okay, I'm, you know, really thinking a lot about it. I want all these things and I'm doing the little things. I'm trying this, I'm trying that, but they haven't really declared to the world that they are a speaker. Now, I've talked about this with folks for a really long time. The word speaker can feel big, like, ugh, what do you— I'm not a speaker. I am just regular old me speaking. That doesn't make me a speaker. We tend to have this image in our heads of what a speaker is. I was just on an amazing call this morning, doing a clarity call with an amazing woman. And the first thing she said to me was, I know you talk a lot about building a speaking business, but I don't want to do that. But then she went on to tell me about how she is working on a book and she wants to do more speaking and she wants to earn more money through her speaking and she's got a keynote coming up and she wants to really leverage it. And I was like, Psst, P.S., you are building a speaking business. Now, it may not be the only thing that you do, but it doesn't mean that you cannot claim the title of speaker. And what I'm here to tell you right now is that if you don't claim the title of speaker, if you don't declare it to the world with full confidence, even if you don't totally believe it yet, You cannot expect people to trust you with that moment. You're asking people to trust you, and you might be an unknown quantity and say, yeah, and they, you want them to invite you to come speak perhaps in front of hundreds of people or thousands of people, even dozens of people. Sometimes those can require even more trust. And if you haven't claimed the title of speaker and started truly declaring it to the world, it is a leap that not a lot of people will take because they won't know if you can really do it. Okay. Now, if you yourself aren't sure that you can do it, right, there's support. There's lots of things we can learn to get better. But most of the time it's not about the skills. It is about the belief, the belief in you as a speaker, in yourself, in that moment, owning that moment, that space, that you are worthy of it, that you can do something powerful with it. Oh, it's big stuff. And so when I talk today about declaring it to the world, and I'm gonna share with you 3 really simple things that if you are not doing, I want you to go do. Easy things. These are not difficult things. These are really easy checkbox things that you can do to help declare to the world that you are a speaker. If you aren't doing that yet, it's worth taking a moment and asking yourself why. What is holding you back from really owning the title of speaker? What is the thing that's keeping you from letting everybody know? Because we can't build all the speaking things, we can't build the one-pager and, and build the signature talk and then just cross our fingers and hope that people will come. They won't know. They won't know and they won't think of you and trust you with those big moments unless we really Declare it. So that is what we are going to do, my friends. Okay. The 3 things I'm going to share with you are 3 things that are not complicated. One of them might take a little more time, but it's not complicated. And, hmm, and what I would suggest is that you put on your list to get this done before the end of 2022. Okay, a little challenge for you, a little nudge, a little that like, yep, we can do this. Are you ready? 3 ways that you can declare to the world that you are a speaker. Okay, number 1, first thing that I want you to do is to make sure that you have the title speaker in your social profiles. Okay, it's really easy to do in Instagram, on Facebook, okay, where all the different places, LinkedIn. If you don't have yourself named as a speaker, that, that is part of what you do, it's part of your title on LinkedIn. If you haven't done that yet, okay, you can't expect people to trust you with the big moments and you can't expect expect people to come asking you to speak. Okay? So that is the first thing I want you to do. It doesn't take long and it makes a huge difference. Okay? Now, let me pause for a moment and just say that I know sometimes we're like, well, I'm not really feeling this yet. And I like to use the mindset of we are going to behave as if, okay? If you are not feeling this yet, behave as if, all right? If you don't have the courage yet, borrow mine for you, okay? This is, I'm giving you a task and you have to follow my directions. You've got to do it, okay? So go add speaker to your social profiles and your bios. Okay, in the same way, the second thing that I want you to do is add it to your email signature. Super simple thing to do. How many emails are you sending every day? All the time? Lots, right? That's a really simple way of letting people know, especially when you aren't just a speaker, right? But perhaps speaking is how you are supporting these other elements of your business. Perhaps you are a coach and you're sending out all these messages with people and they see, oh, cool, Lisa's also a speaker. Awesome. We've got that event coming up. Maybe she would be great for that. I've really enjoyed the connection that I'm having so far. Okay. So it's a subtle way for you to let people know that you do that without you having to say it all the time. Okay, so we've got your social profiles and your bios, piece of cake. Email signature, so easy. It's so easy for you to do this. All right. Now this last one, it's not quite as easy, perhaps, but this one is a must. You need to have a speaker bio. Page on your website. If you're like, I don't know how to do websites, I can't hire somebody to do a website. Depending on your platform, and I would love to hear what platforms you are on, I am not saying that you need to have go hire somebody and create a fancy schmancy whole thing on your website. Eventually we want to build. Something that is worthy of a $10,000 speaker, right? Something that, that connotes all of the trust in the world or more. If I am looking for a speaker and I go to their website and they don't have a speaker page on their website, it's not at the top of all of the menu options, about, resources, blog. Blah, blah, blah, contact page, all of the things, and they don't have speaker up there? Nope. This person's not for real. This person isn't playing a big enough game. This person doesn't take their speaking seriously. They don't have a speaker page on their website. You're not going to get the big gigs. You won't get paid as much as you could, and you will lose out on opportunities. Okay. So if anything, add a page on your website, put it up in the main menu and put some basic things on your speaker page. Okay. At the very least, a contact form so people can easily contact you. Okay. And some photos and videos of you, some testimonials. It doesn't have to be fancy. Okay. Having something is better than nothing. And that is how we start to declare to the world. Just have something. Okay. This last one, obviously you could take a lot of time with it. I'm not saying I need you to take a lot of time with it. I'm saying I want you to get one. On your website stat if you don't already have a specific page for you as a speaker. Okay. I have done a whole episode on copywriting and your speaker page. Okay. So go back and find that. You can find it over on the This Moved Me podcast. Look it up on, on wherever podcasts are, you can find it. And there's tons of resources on how to do that. I have a download. They, it's, I should find out, but there is a great conversation I had with Kathy Young from Rekindle Communications, and Kathy talks about the core elements that we want to have on our speaker page. And I created a download from that experience so that you can start to build towards it. But at the very least. I want a page dedicated on your website to your speaking, and I want it to be up on the main menu. Okay. And I'm going to be even more specific with what I mean there. I don't want your speaker page buried under your services. And I see that a lot, right? Where I'm looking for the speaker page and they've got it under services. So it's like the services and it drops down and it's like coaching. Courses, perhaps, right? Then speaking's there. It's okay to have it in there, but you need speaker and speaking. You need your speaker page on the main menu, up on the main navigation, right at the top. Okay, so you can have it in both places if you want, right? Since you might see it as one of your services. But if you are serious about getting paid more for your speaking, If you're serious about really taking advantage of your message, of the opportunities that you have out front, and you want to bring in more of them, you've got to put yourself up on that main nav. Okay. So social profiles and bios, go add speaker there, declare it to the world. Easy peasy. Don't overthink it too much. Just, you're also a speaker, right? You might be coach and speaker. Hey, CEO and speaker. I just add it in there. Don't overthink it. Your email signature, include that as a part of what you do on the regular. Okay, just put, make sure speaking is present for people all of the time. It's a really powerful way to let people know that this is part of what you do. And then last but not least, cause it's really important, is to add a speaker page on your website and put it up in the main nav. I will say it again. I will not take a speaker seriously or assume that they are legit big time speaker unless they have a speaker page on their website and it's in the main navigation. Okay? Those are your to-dos before the end of 2022. Can you do it? Will you commit to these with me, my friends? Why? It's worth it. It's powerful. These 3 things will make a huge difference for you. And again, if you feel nervous about this, like, What makes me a speaker? Am I worthy of the title? Let me just say this. If you speak, you are a speaker. There is nothing you have to be or to suddenly become in order to wear that title and own that title. Okay? And the title helps us become. So even if the title comes first, that's okay. That's okay. This is how it's done. This is how it's done. So go declare to the world that you are a speaker, and then we're gonna watch you just shine this next year. Absolutely. All right, my friends, thank you for being here. We'll talk soon. Bye-bye.
