How We Got A 30-50% Response Rate With This Outbound Messaging Technique

Sam Miller shows how to get 30-50% response rates on LinkedIn outreach by mining prospects' profiles for emotional hooks. Look at their posts, likes, and activity to find personal interests or recent moments, then write a tailored question that references something specific. Miller walks through four real examples and says this technique has generated over 100 booked calls.

Today I'm going to be sharing with you one of the techniques that Ben and I use to start more natural conversations with decision makers in LinkedIn Messenger. We've used this technique to book well over 100+ calls on LinkedIn for our business. We've made a pretty penny from it, so it's going to be worth absorbing this, listening to the entire video, and testing it out for yourself, guys. So the basis of this technique is all about human psychology and really understanding What's going to motivate another human being to want to take the time to speak to you? I'm going to be showing you a few LinkedIn profiles and I'm going to be explaining mine and Ben's thought process behind what data we look for and how we look for these little points of interest, these little subject lines and talking points so we can start more natural conversations. Let's go. Oh, shit. Okay, cool. So Joe Bush is our first candidate. I'm going to open him up on LinkedIn because that's where all the juicy data will be. Cool. Okay, so now just to give you an idea of the first things I'm looking at, guys, like I always look at people's profiles and profile pictures first because believe it or not, that can actually give us a lot of data. In this case, there's not anything, you know, that personal or any, any bit of data he's given me to say that that would be a good conversation starter. The headline hasn't really given me anything for now, so what I'm gonna do is go on to Joe's activity and just see what he's posted and what he's liked. So before we go any further, guys, we've got, we've got activity to choose from and we've got posts. Activity is everything he's liked, which is still, you know, a great way to understand what he's interested in. If he's, if he likes a lot of posts by Stephen Bartlett, for instance, for for instance, then I know that he's probably interested in Stephen Bartlett. He probably listens to his podcasts, and therefore that would be a good subject matter to start a conversation with him. In this case, I would always say posts are probably the most potent thing to latch onto. If they have posted regular content, then they've taken the time and effort to voice their opinion in some way. And so this is going to be a much more accurate representation or much better data around what they like, what they dislike, what they're sharing with their audience, and what we can start a conversation around. So let's just have a quick look at what he's posted. Cool. Invoice issued 1st September, invoice paid also 1st September. To all the businesses out there who pay on time or early, thank you. So this would be a perfect post to latch on to, guys. Um, you know, it's a relatively generic subject, but there's a lot of— everyone can relate to this, you know. Every single person can relate to working with companies, especially if you're a CEO, and getting paid 60 days later, 30 days later, having to worry about cash flow, and maybe even having to chase up on constant payments. And he's even said here, guys, to all business owners out there who pay on time or early, thank you. Um, it's just such a great subject to latch on to. You could go in share an experience about what you've been through with a company in terms of them paying early or on time to relate to this post that he's written. And you could ask him a question about it. And chances are, guys, because he's written a post about it, because he's expressed interest in it, because he's sharing it with LinkedIn, it also got pretty good traction. You know, the chances of him responding— oh, the chances of him responding are pretty high. Let's go further down and see what other subjects we can latch on to. Okay, cool. We've got energy prices. Energy prices in the UK are a major issue, but they're not the reason to return to the office unless your office is just a walk or cycle away. 30 to 60+ minutes each way unpaid, £5 to £20+ in rail fares or petrol. Having the option to work from home will continue to be appreciated by masses. Step 1: to trust your team. Again, guys, this is an absolute golden post to latch onto. He's pretty much talking about, you know, he's talking about energy prices. Firstly, everyone can relate to the rise in energy prices, so we could conversation around that. But he's really talking about, um, why people should continue to work from home. And again, everyone can relate to that. This is such a great subject. Everyone through COVID, um, was forced to work from home, but now everyone loves to work from home. You know, there's so many companies changing the way they do business. There's so many points of conversation around this. You could share a story of how working from home changed your life. And then you could ask them a question about his perspective working from home. How has it changed his life? How has his day changed? How many hours has he saved? Again, there's so many topics that you could ask him about and start a conversation around. So this guy's, you know, he's got plenty of subjects, guys. I'm going to go on to the next person and just give you an idea of what else I can latch on to. Ryoshin. Let's go on to Ryoshin. Again, I'm sorry if I butchered your name, Ryoshin. I don't mean to. So already I love this picture of London. Don't know where that is, but that's a lovely door. A bit random. The beauty bag, interesting. Let's go and see what he's posted. Cool, not that much. Life isn't fair, that's why you bring extra paintballs. The sales team enjoying our quarterly team building workshop. So this is brilliant. So this was, um, so he, he owns the Beauty Bag, so this is obviously his sales team going to a paintball event. This was 4 months ago, but that's brilliant. You know, they obviously, they probably have done this before. Um, quarterly team building workshop. They might have not done it before, but still, the fact that 'He took,' or, 'The sales team went paintballing' is hilarious. I bet you they had a few laughs. That would be a perfect subject that I would latch onto. This is brilliant. So I would like that post, and then I would say something like, 'Hey Rioshin, noticed you and your sales team went paintballing 4 months ago. Every time I've been paintballing, I've laughed, I've cried, and I've also come back with a bunch of bruises.' Did you manage to get any sales managers in the head or something like that? I would probably ask him something like that, something funny, because when I think of paintballing, I think of funny moments. I think of being a bit scared, being excited, and that's probably the emotions that he has associated around this. And to do it with your sales team, you know, if you really wanted to in a funny way hit one of your sales managers in the bum, that'd be even more hilarious. So I would definitely ask him something about how the day went. Um, did he get— did he— did he get everyone he wanted to? Um, did he come back bruised? Is he going again with the team? I would ask him questions like that. Um, so again, this, this is absolutely perfect. Okay, Nina. Now this is great. You know, she's got a lovely profile picture, a good banner. This tells me she takes pride in her LinkedIn profile, which means she's probably using it in some capacity. Um, now let's go on to her Activity. Cool. Okay, so this is— she is mentioning Slush as well. Slush is obviously making waves. Um, let's go to posts. Cool, this is great. This is my fourth time at Slush in Helsinki and the event never disappoints. The amazing show of innovative startups around the world makes you grateful for technology and has a zillion positive benefits to help make the world a better place. Cool, this is all awesome, guys. So firstly, this is what I'm looking for. The picture is quite emotive. You know, she is smiling, she looks happy. She's posted a selfie, which for a lot of business owners is quite a difficult thing to do, but she's obviously proud to do it and is okay doing it. This already shows me that she's got a lot of emotion attached around this. You know, she looks very happy and the language she's using is very emotive. Guys, this is the fourth time at Slush in Helsinki and the event never disappoints! The amazing show of innovative startups. 'Zillion positive benefits.' You know, I'm always looking for the language that people display in, in their post or their activity. She is being very emotive. She's put a smiling picture. All this data is telling me there's a lot of emotion attached around this subject. And now I've got enough information to say, okay, Nina is probably going to respond to a question I ask around this event. Now, what could I ask? I could mention— I could ask and go into the fact that it's her fourth time at Slush. You know, that's quite significant. She's been back to the same event four times. That's very rare for certain people to go back four times. I could go down that route and ask her, what brought you back the fourth time? You know, have you experienced anything different? How has the— how has Slush changed over the fourth time that you've been there? I could go down that route. Um, Helsinki. That, that in itself is a conversation. She's gone to Helsinki. I've always wanted to go to Helsinki. Um, I could ask her, what's Helsinki like? What was it like being in Helsinki while visiting Slush? What was the food like? What were the people like? That's a conversation in itself. And then I could ask her about Slush again. I could do a bit more research into Slush. She said, um, she's grateful for technology and it's a zillion positive benefits. I could ask her what was her favorite piece of technology that she, she saw at Slush? She's expressed that she's very interested in that. That would be a great question to ask her because she probably has something in her mind of something she saw there that completely blew her mind. She probably saw a few things, but there's probably one thing where she was like, wow, that piece of technology is absolutely amazing. And if she's interested in that subject, which she obviously is, chances are if I ask her a question, she's going to respond to me. So that's a great one, guys. Again, multiple different subjects to latch on to. This is another thing, guys. I mean, I just spotted something else. She's given me so much data. This time around is even more special to me, and this is probably why she looks so happy here. As I'm joined with my entrepreneur son. Oh, she went with her son. Wow. Okay, cool. So she went with her son, guys. That's amazing. That would be the question I would latch on to, hands down. She went to her son. To this amazing event that she's been 4 times, it's extra emotional to her. I would definitely latch on to that and I would definitely use that as a conversation starter. You can see how much data people can give us in one post to latch on to, to start a conversation. There's just so much here. It's brilliant. Okay guys, I'm going to do one more because I think we've done quite a lot. Founder and CEO of Resume Library and see— wow. Okay, cool. So this guy's pretty high up. He's the founder of CV Library and Resume Library. Um, let's see what he has got on activity. CV Live, he strikes again. Catch our Advan circling London roadside and digital adverts through the UK today. Cool, that's pretty cool. Road signs, decent. He's obviously quite proud about it because he posted about it. This was 5 months ago though. Um, mum and I had a brilliant time at Platinum Dreamer pageant last week. That's sweet, he went with his mum. The pageant jubilee last weekend was incredibly moving and privileged to be part of such a historic event. Cool. Okay, that's decent. That's a good one. I'm not too sure, you know, it's a difficult one. Let's go to activity. Uh, some of our sales team are currently enjoying an unforgettable trip to Barbados as part of our annual High Flyers Club. Okay, cool. Okay, cool. This is quite fun. Um, oh, he's there as well. That is him. Cool, wicked. I didn't think he would be there. And next stop is South Africa in 2023. That's awesome. You know, company holidays, especially holidays like this where, you know, you've achieved something great, you're going with your teammates, you're going to an exotic, amazing place like Barbados. I mean, that's insane. And next year they're going to South Africa. There's so many, um, things going around in my head of questions I want to ask him. I could ask him, how was the trip? As a very simple one. What kind of cool events did they attend? Did they have a cool night out where they just got absolutely hammered and went clubbing? And he's going to South Africa in 2023. Again, questions to ask him around these, there's plenty. So, so this would be a great post that I would latch on to, guys. Again, a lot of emotion tied around here. He, he probably had a great time. Lots of smiles. You're in an exotic country. It's hard not to have a lot of fun in these places. So I think I've gone through enough profiles, guys. Hopefully you've gotten a good understanding of the types of subjects that I'm latching on to and how I look for data in profiles to start a conversation. The next level is being able to take these subjects and write compelling questions and making it sound natural. That really is another video in itself. But, you know, this is the first stage. Start practicing this. Start looking out for things you can latch on to, things that they might be interested in, emotional events, emotional moments, things that they will remember, and start using it in your prospecting.
