A guy shares what dating a Jamaican woman taught him: seasoning is everything, plantain pronunciation matters more than you'd think, and family gatherings at Auntie Pam's house involve rum, mac and cheese, dancing, and punch strong enough to knock you sideways.

Everything I've learned dating a Jamaican woman. One word: seasoning. Growing up, I was fed well, but when I met my partner, I discovered the true meaning of flavor. Sorry, Mom. I remember all the herbs and spices she was pulling out the drawers, thinking she was about to cast some kind of spell. It might as well have been a spell, cuz after tasting her fish, my taste buds were officially born. It's plantain, not plantain. For God's sake, do not go into a Jamaican household and say this incorrectly. I remember being at my partner's house when we were much younger, saying, gah, I love this plantain. All All of a sudden, the room went quiet. Her mom and her sisters turned their heads and looked at me like I'd just spoken profanity. I'm pleased to tell you that not only can I say plantain with the correct pronunciation according to Jamaicans, I can actually cook it now as well. Family gatherings can actually be fun. Now, I'm not saying I don't enjoy meeting up with my family, and I love them all dearly, but when I go to see my partner's Caribbean family, it's a proper party. I'm talking rum, mac and cheese, plenty of dancing, and a special punch made by one of the cousins that's so potent it could get a horse drunk. It is always a good party at Auntie Pam's house.
