Dreaming Big, Doing Bigger: My Nonprofit Quest with Dr. Travis Zigler
1 Jan 2024 · 0 min
Host Stacey (Stacey Lauren) reflects on her long-standing dream to start a nonprofit and describes a recent decision moment after consulting Dr. Travis Zigler. She decides to pursue creating the "do the Thing Foundation" to channel her donations and expand impact across mental health, entrepreneurship, prison/recovery work, and children’s mental health. The episode emphasizes overcoming internal resistance, taking actionable first steps (she plans to email Dr. Zigler), and adding 'A' (Accountability: "I'm game") to her do the Thing formula.
I do really believe 100% from every part of me that everyone has the capacity to be able to do the things that they want and not to be held back by the mental baggage that's in our head that we want to push through.
Welcome to the do the Thing podcast. In each episode, we get down and personal with people who go after the things they want to make all their wildest dreams come true. Join us as we unveil and dissect a formula for what it takes to do the thing. Here is your host, Stacy Lauren.
Hey, everyone. Welcome to the do the Thing podcast. This is your host, Stacy Lauren. Well, here I go again, doing the thing. Or at least I think I'm doing the thing. It's funny, I've always had this dream of having a nonprofit and being able to really help whoever I wanted with the non profit, but it just felt so complicated and something that I just wasn't ready to do. And I do like to donate money to a lot of different organizations, but I've done it personally, not strategically. And so. And I've volunteered my time too, at different non profits, and that's been really rewarding as well. And so I always thought just opening my own would be just so hard and complicated. And then I just interviewed Travis Zigler a few days ago, and he was talking about how he helps entrepreneurs set up nonprofits. And it was funny. I was like, man, that just sounds so cool. So we were emailing back and forth about what I could do, and I'm still in my head, I'm like, oh my gosh, I'm so not ready for this. I have so much going on. This is just another thing that I would be adding to my plate. And as you guys know, if you've been following me a while, I do like to do the thing, but I also like to take space from doing the thing. And that is doing the thing. Because sometimes it can get really easy to get caught up in the momentum of something and then lose sight of what you really want. And so that's something I have been really good at in the last couple of years. Only the last few years is being able to take a break from whatever it is that I'm doing. So that way I can really make sure I'm in alignment with what I want to do and not get caught up in what everyone else wants me to do. And that's been really important to me to stay true to the message of what my heart wants. And so anyway, we had emailed back and forth, he had sent some ideas over for the nonprofit. And in my mind I'm like, oh, I'll put this on the shelf at least for, I don't know, six months. I haven't even started charging for anything yet. It's everything I've been doing has been free. And so anyway, I all of a sudden was at the gym this morning and then it just came to me, why am I coming up with a new name for this nonprofit? Why wouldn't I just do do the Thing Foundation? And then instead of donating money personally for these different organizations, which I've already been doing, I could actually donate from my nonprofit. And so I don't need to really do anything new other than set up the nonprofit. And then there's obviously all kinds of benefits with the nonprofit. Tax benefits, there's Google Ads benefits. There's just lots of different things that are going to come to me from having this. And then also getting to fill my heart and help even more people with the things that I'm really passionate about. I mean, I am just so passionate about so many things and helping people in mental health, getting more connected, entrepreneurship, prison, helping people with recovery, children's mental health. There's so many things that the possibilities are just unlimited now in my head. So yeah, I'm going to email him today and say that I wanted to do a non profit and I'm going to call it the do the Thing Foundation. And I just think it's important to note kind of where the decision came from. In my head I'm already like, no, I'm not ready. This is too complicated. It's going to create too much extra work. And then, I don't know, I did my comedy routine last night where I'm telling people, what are you waiting for? Don't wait for opportunity, create it. That was the line at the very end. And then I don't know, between that and then my workout this morning, then all of a sudden I'm thinking of all these different people that I want to help and I'm like, why am I waiting? I've already been kind of doing it. Just personally, I haven't been doing it strategically. And so this just seems to make so much sense. So I think that's really what I wanted to take out of this episode today, is that you don't need to wait for whatever it is you want to do. Just when you feel yourself resisting it and saying, oh, I don't have time for this right now, ask yourself, what does that really mean? Why wouldn't you have time for something that you really want to do and that's in your heart and what can you do to just even take the first step to be able to do the things that you want. And so that's what I would encourage you guys to do, is really just step in and be able to follow your heart for whatever that thing is to you. So. All right, guys, that's it. Just wanted to pop on and let you know what is going on with me right now, and I'm super excited. I can't wait to keep you posted on what that's going to be. But I am also adding the A for the do the Thing formula. I'm game, which is accountability. By announcing it here and saying that I am going through the process. I'm going to email him today. I don't actually even know what it costs or all the other things. I have to still figure all that out, but at least I'm going to email him and figure it out, whereas before I was going to wait six months. So I'm really excited just about that and just the idea of all the different possibilities that could come from it. So have a wonderful day and do the thing. Don't wait for opportunity. Create it.
