6 Practical Steps To DESTROY LAZINESS Today

Stephen Scoggins delivers a motivational YouTube talk ("6 Practical Steps To DESTROY LAZINESS Today") recounting his own struggle with laziness and describing a multi-step, practical framework to overcome it. In this chunk he covers background (working nonstop to build his first company), then outlines five actionable steps: 1) get emotional—create a vivid, multi-sensory vision and tie hope to future outcomes; 2) create deadlines—to build urgency and accountability across life areas; 3) start small—break Big goals into bite-sized tasks to build momentum; 4) be uncomfortable—seek environments that push you and build resilience; 5) remove distractions—prioritize and eliminate shiny-squirrel activities that consume hours. The video is pragmatic, candid, and directive, with a call-to-action to subscribe.
Man, there's nothing more frustrating than knowing you need to do something and then not doing it. But in this video we're break that cycle.
One of the biggest things that I had to conquer in my life early on was sheerly just being lazy. And I don't mean like working hard the day before, then not working hard the day after, need rest, recuperation. I mean consistently knowing I needed to take action and then choosing not to do it. And as a result, I was constantly frustrated. And as a result, I was constantly mad at myself. And as a result, I was constantly blaming myself. And as a result, I was constantly shaming myself. Does that sound familiar? I bet it does. The reason I know that is because I used to do it all the time. Look, here's the deal. When I started my first company, Che AKA Custom Home Exteriors, with absolutely nothing, right, pulling the stuff out of the trash piles to build my own scaffolding and stuff like that, I knew that if I was going to take that opportunity and take complete ownership of it and do anything with it, I was going to have to give it all I had. And for four years straight, I didn't take a single day off. Not a Saturday, not a Sunday, not even a holiday. I worked my butt off. Why? Because my adversity before me that was preceding me had to be addressed and I had to confront my laziness head on. I had to confront the fact that I needed to move forward, I needed to take action and I had to take it so serious, not knowing the full outcome but trusting the process that it kept me moving forward. So how do you conquer laziness? It's simple. You take your dream seriously. Let's jump into the four areas that I personally use right now, even now, in the last 20 plus years, to keep myself out of the laziness cycle and into the production cycle. Step one, You've got to get emotional. You have to partner the emotional hopes and dreams of your heart, okay, with the actual outcomes of the success. In other words, you've got to build hope towards the future. You've got to take the time to work on things in such a way way that you're tying your emotional well being and your emotional principles of passion and drive and motivation to a greater outcome than you've ever known. But how do you do that? How do you actually partner with your emotions that actually help you win versus the emotions that kind of hold you back? One of the best ways I like to do that is when I'm actually trying to create a Vision, create an outcome, Create something that I want that might be a little bit further in the future, maybe 12 or 18 months is I'm going to take the time to actually try to run that want, that desire, that yearning through all five of my senses. I'm going to try to paint a mental picture of what it would look like finished. I'm going to try to think about the different smells and the different things I might actually sense when I actually get to that place. Maybe the smell of new leather. If it's a new car or something like that. Okay. I might take the time to think about the things that I would hear the birds chirping or the oceans coming in or the whales that I'm listening to in Hawaii. If it's one of my goals. At the end of the day, your emotional well being has to be tied to the hope in your future. So many times we tie and partner our emotions with the wrong direction. We tie our emotions with our past, our past and our present pains. Unfortunately, when we do that, that prevents us from partnering with our future. What you've got to do is you've got to get super duper clear. Maybe grab some magazines, grab some pictures, do something to cut those things out and put those things in front of you. Like put your success in front of you where you can tangibly see it on a regular basis and partner your emotions to it. Why? Because you are going to want to go after it with drive, go after it with passion and go after it like your life depends on it. Why? Because your legacy and your life does. If you are going to stay where you are today, then you are going to be continually be frustrated with where you've always been. You don't want that to be your reality. Instead, think about what it takes to grind it out and to go after it and the sacrifices that you need to make that a reality. Partner your emotions with your success that you want, not the present that you have. One of the best ones that you can partner yourself with is the emotion of hope. So make sure you go after it like your life depends on it. All right, Step number two. Create deadlines with yourself. It builds urgency. Here's what I mean by that. I want you to ask yourself a quick question. Why is it that people who are about to go on vacation get three times the amount of work done that they do in a normal year rather than what they should be doing all year? It's the amount of deadlines. There's a travel date coming up, right? There's a vacation Coming up, there's something to look forward to coming up. And all of a sudden you're like, oh, I gotta get this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this. That's right. A lot of this is you have to get all this done. Well, you can use that same hack to actually motivate yourself when there's not a travel date coming up or not a vacation coming up. I use deadlines even now. I like deadlines because deadlines hold me accountable for my own actions and my own responsibilities. If you actually take the time to use deadlines in every single area of your life, and we refer to those again as the eight pillars of life. Eight areas of life that everybody has, they kind of master. If you use deadlines in each of those areas, you're more prone to get more progress. Why? Because the deadline holds you accountable for the actions that you're taking on a regular basis. And if you don't have deadlines and what happens is it's okay to kick it down the curb a week or two weeks or three weeks or six months. The worst thing you can be doing for yourself is, well, tomorrow, when or next week I'll. Or next month I'll. No, no, no, no, no. You take action now daily, consistently building urgency towards a deadline. That deadline holds you accountable, and that deadline holds you accountable in such a way that keeps you moving forward because it's not letting you off the hook. One of the biggest reasons that people stay in a lazy state is because they don't put deadlines on stuff. The reason they don't put deadlines on stuff is because they want to give themselves an out so they don't have to do the things on time that's going to get them the most traction. That's not you. You on the other hand, want to consistently build these outcomes and deadlines in such a way that prevents you and holds you accountable. And avoiding laziness at all cost and deadlines will help you do that. So let's go on and move on to number three. Start small and break large initiatives into bite sized tasks. Why does that work? A lot of times we stay in laziness and we stay in that lazy zone because we don't want to do the big thing. The big thing is kind of intimidating. It's kind of scary. Well, when you begin to break things down into bite sized tasks, it's much easier to feel encouraged and confident about getting the bite sized task done. It's like eating the elephant One bite at a time. For example, we talked about that a little bit beforehand. But if I'm going to build a multi million dollar organization, I can't go from DOL1 to multi million dollar. I have to go from $1 to $10 and $10 to $100, 100 to $1,000 and so on and so forth. Your life in every area of your life is very much the same way. I find that most people like myself back in the day, get lazy because we're like, that thing is scary. I don't know how I'm gonna get that accomplished. I think it's safer to stay where I'm at. I'll just kind of push it off till tomorrow. I'll just kind of kick it down the curb, not realizing that we were all holding ourselves back. You don't want to do that. So make sure you start small. Break down things into small bite sized. That will help you build momentum and avoid the laziness cycle. Step 4 Be in uncomfortable places. Both figuratively and literally. It's going to help you build resilience. If you are going to get anything done and take massive action on a regular basis, you are going to have to be comfortable being uncomfortable. Meaning you may not be in the environment that you best want. In fact, it's actually better that you're not in the environment that's the most comfortable. Maybe you got to leave your house, maybe you got to go out for a walk. You, no matter what you need to do, you've got to become comfortable with being uncomfortable with where you're at. It's kind of like the old analogy where an old dog is sitting on top of a porch, sitting on a nail. Well, he doesn't actually get up until the nail actually stings his butt. Right? You've got to have your nail in your rear. You've got to have your place in another zone, another level up, another stage, another piece where you can keep yourself moving forward. Because you're not in your comfort zone. You're not in your home, in your bedroom, kind of hiding things out. You're not at your office place kind of in your cubicle, kind of not doing anything. Instead, you're putting yourselves in the places where you can win by creating opportunities that don't allow you to stay in a lazy place. Get the nail in the butt and get going. You can do this. Stop playing around with your future. You deserve more. And the only way you're going to get there is if you go after it. Like your life depends on It. Look, I don't mean to be, like, overly, like, passionate or, like, poking you like a bear, but, dude, I want you to be. Well, I want you to be successful. I want you to get going. Stop playing around. Come on. You've got another level inside of you. I know you do. The person you need to be is on the other side of being comfortable. Get out there, get serious, and get moving forward. You can do this. Stop playing around. Come on. Look, I'm dedicating my life to trying to help you win, right? Making these videos, putting this content together, doing my best to give you the best of me. That helped me transform my life, and I want to keep that moving forward. So do me a favor, hit subscribe, smash the bell so you get notified when I release a new video that can do just that. And I would greatly appreciate it. The next one is this. Step number five is this. And this is why it's important. Because if you're going to actually break laziness, you're going to have to remove distractions. Most of my laziness came from constantly getting distracted by other things. Looking at the shiny thing over here or chasing the squirrel over here. Maybe she's cute, doing all this kind of stuff. The more you have distractions, the more prone you're going to be to not get things done and to stay in the state of staying in a lazy place. If you were spending hours a day playing video games because you're hanging out with your friends, you are also wasting hours a day that you could be building your future. Do you understand that? Distractions, bad.
Distractions, bad.
Progress. Great.
Distractions have to be dealt with. You have to learn to prioritize the most important things of your life in your business, your career, your relationships, all of that, and take them seriously. The longer you mess that up, the longer you wait on that, the longer it's going to take you to actually get started. I wasted five years.
Five years of progress because I refuse to remove distractions. Five years. You don't have to waste five minutes. You're capable. I know you can do this. It's why I'm pushing you. It's why I have to push you. It's because I believe in you. I know you can do these things. All right, I actually have a bonus one for you. Step number six, create routines. Why do we create routines? Because we want to reinforce the actions that we want to take. Well, how do we do that? Okay, well, first of all, we've already battled the other areas that kind of were holding us back, keep us in that laziness zone. We battle our comfort zones. We battled our wants. We battle all these different things. The routines prevent you from slipping backwards on a slippery slope back into bad behaviors. The routine of getting up at a specific time, journaling at a specific time, or working at a specific time, learning and growing at a specific time fills up your day in such a way that allows for you to not have distractions and other things pop up that will make you pop off course. That's why you have to create routines. Routines are so powerful that they will, by definition, determine whether or not you are going to be successful. Why? Because you're going to have your measurable milestones, you're going to have your daily actions, and you're going to be able to see early on whether or not you are on or off course. You've got to learn to build routines around the things that you want, and those wants have to be stronger than the desire to remain where you are. It's that simple. So check out this next video to keep it moving forward.
