7 Principles To Master Your Physical Health

Stephen Scoggins lays out seven principles for better health: be intentional, drink mostly water, cut sugar (Americans average 400g daily), skip fried foods, eliminate toxins, exercise daily with cardio and strength work, and take a rest day. He also recommends superfoods like turmeric and apple cider vinegar.

In this video, we're going to teach you the seven principles you must have to master your physical health, increase your energy, and build the body you've always wanted to have. So stay tuned.
One of the things you'll learn very quickly when you set out to transform your life is that the importance of your health is paramount and how that feeds your thoughts and your actions. I mean, you got to have the right kind of brain activity, right? The vast majority of high achievers actually get this wrong. And if it hadn't been for my first mentor, Steve Myrick, I definitely would have, too. He was laying on the hospital bed with all kinds of things attached to his fingers, his head, and even an oxygen mask on his face when my father and I decided to actually pay him a visit and go see him in the hospital.
He was a man who was incredibly successful in any way of business and entrepreneurship. But as I walked in, he motioned my dad and I to come, like, a little closer to him. Come closer. Closer. Just then, my dad, with tears in his eyes, began to praise Steve for all the success he had in his life, from the homes he built, communities he made, to the people he quietly helped behind the scenes. Then Steve pulled the mask off his face slowly and looked at us directly in the eye and simply said, what good is it to have all the success if I have no health? And then he looked at my dad and I and said, take care of the machine that takes care of your heart and your mind and pursue it just as hard as you pursue success.
Never take your youth for granted. Never forget where you come from, and also never lose sight of where you're going. I didn't actually know what to do in that moment. Here's the thing. It's easy to put our health in jeopardy, especially because it happens mostly in the background, because the damage we do to ourselves through fried foods, sugar, alcohol, and more is a slow fade. It happens over time. It kills our creativity, kills our stamina, and kills all of our activity levels. Here are the seven principles that I personally use to govern my physical health to keep myself moving, thinking clearly, and growing. Principle number one, you gotta be intentional. I mean, really intentional. It's not hard to see why this can be so important in giving the true story of the hospital room with Steve. In order to live well, you've got to decide to make your health a top priority. And you need to be intentional and focused to make that a reality. The best practices here lay somewhere between doing nothing and planning every single exercise and meal. You have to see your body as a machine with your brain as the cpu. The machine will only be able to create and take actions based on the health of the operating system. I have personally known very successful people who have passed away in their 20s, 30s, 40s and more because they put way too much emphasis on being successful in getting ahead only to lose their life in the end because they didn't take care of the machine. You got to take care of this machine. So to my best effort in the next six principles, I'm going to give you action steps to help keep yourself in check and make sure your brain, your body and your heart are always firing on all the cylinders you need. Principle number two Drink plenty of water. And before you tune me out, take this seriously and here's why most people don't actually realize that water has huge benefits to overall healthy living. By doing several things like keeping your body at the proper temperature, increasing your health of your overall muscles and joints, keeping your skin fresh and resolved, and aiding in reduction of aging, which I could use some more of, a properly hydrated body will also be able to remove sickness, toxins and other harmful things from your body quicker. It feeds the areas around your heart and your brain and it helps your cardiovascular system regulate and actually perform at its top performance. To be honest, this is an area where you may have to put your overall health before your guilty pleasures of soft drinks, alcohol and caffeine kicks. I know I had to. Just don't tell anybody. I'm not saying this has to be all or nothing, but what I am saying is those things add toxins to the body. While a healthy and consistent dose of spring water actually increases your body's performance, which increases your brain's performance, which increases your creativity and decreases your lethargy and low motivation. And how many of us have ever said I wish I had more energy? This is how you do it. I Personally use the 8020 rule here. 80% of my liquids I consume is water and my personal favorite is Fiji water due to my friend Casey Kreche's research. And then the other 20% is done in moderation and spaced out over time with family and friends. Maybe a date night with the wife. Alright, next up, principle number three. Reduce or remove your sugar intake. I actually got lost in a vicious cycle for a while taking a ton of sugar and for a long while I didn't think it was all that bad. That is until I realized my weight was shooting up and it seemed the more sugar I got, the more I craved. Our bodies have an automatic receptor that regulates our glucose and insulin levels. The problem is the standard American Diet has almost 400 grams of sugar intake a day. Yes, 400 grams. This is why the potential for obesity is larger for Americans than many other countries. Many food manufacturers actually put sugar or sugar substitutes in in almost every product we consume. Ketchup, chips, protein powders, protein bars, pizza, burgers, sauces, taco mixes. And the list, as you know, goes on. I decided to do keto for a while. And one of the things that I personally learned was the hardest part of that process was actually cutting back on the sugar I was consuming. I did not realize how my insulin levels had been completely destroyed by the sugar. So I switched to things like monk fruit, which made things much easier for the body to digest, reset my insulin and gave me that little sweet taste I was looking for. And after I reduced my sugar, I was no longer insulin resistant. I cut my weight, I increased my stamina, I increased my blood flow significantly, and I got moving. Avoiding sugar in America altogether may be extremely difficult, but we can replace as much of it as possible with better options. Most people who eliminate soft drinks alone can drop 20 pounds in the first few weeks. And by the way, diet drinks are really no healthier than a standard soft drink, but for different reasons. You have to ask yourself what was put into the products to make you buy more of it. There's a reason that's there alright. Principle 4 reduce or remove fried foods. Fried foods can taste so good, and I love some hot wings, but I used to love heaping amounts of french fries as well boneless chicken and other fried foods. The problem is, fried foods increase the chance for diabetes, heart disease and obesity, which over time can completely destroy your heart's ability to perform. This means your extremities and your brain get less blood flow, which in turn leaves you more tired, more often thinking with brain fog on a regular basis. And let's face it, that is not going to help us win at life or our careers or our businesses or our relationships. And much like the sugar conversation earlier, the best practice is to eliminate it from your diet altogether, if at all possible. If not, just get it as minimal as possible in full transparency. I still steal fries from my kids every now and again, and I still love buffalo wings. But I do my best to do a cleanse over the next couple days after eating some of that stuff to try to get the toxins out of my blood and out of my body as quickly as possible. Eating things like salads, like leafy greens. The truth is, once you begin to remove those fried foods and replace them with grilled foods and salads, you'll stop feeling as lethargic, especially right after you eat or for the days leading after that. Principle number five, Reduce or remove toxins. You may actually be surprised at these types of toxins that are put into things. However, the most powerful ones come from dopamine intensifiers like tobacco, alcohol and prescription drugs. So be careful with that stuff. Try to get rid of it if at all possible.
For example, let me do this. Here's a quick look at nicotine and nicotine based products. Did you know that smokefree.gov states that the brain develops extra nicotine receptors to accommodate the large doses of nicotine from pieces of tobacco, which when the brain stops getting the nicotine hits it's used to. The result is nicotine withdrawal, which makes you feel more anxious, more irritable, and having additional strong cavings for nicotine, which is why most people find it very difficult to quit. When you smoke, your brain will end up creating the very thing you need for future dopamine hits just to offset the side effects of not smoking. So the way you physically feel you're not able to get the nicotine spike is actually caused by the nicotine in the first place on along with the other side effects. That's right, the nicotine problem creates the nicotine problem, especially things like premature aging. It increases the age of your skin by up to a decade and a deterioration of your overall health in your vision, hearing loss, premature death, like my grandmother, from cancer, heart disease, emphysema, light to severe brain damage, early memory loss. Really? Is a cigarette really worth it? Here's the point I'm trying to drive home. Your body was meant to function on water, healthy proteins and greens. That's it. You do those things well, you win. Well, most of the man made things that we consume actually contain the things that may be harmful to our overall health because there's products to sell and the one thing that's impossible to replace, as Steve said, is your health. Eliminating as many toxins as possible is critical. Critical to helping you actually become highly successful with your physical health and actually making sure your brain can fire on all cylinders. Alright, next up, principle six, Exercise daily. When some people hear this, they're like, dude, I hate exercising. I mean seriously, I'd say that not every exercise has to be done in a gym, but you still need to be active and you need to think about being active on a daily basis. Now the gym is my method of choice, but A daily brisk walk in your area may actually be more enjoyable and work better for you. Just get moving. I recommend doing your exercise in the morning before you start your day if at all possible because it will get your brain firing on all the cylinders and it also increases your overall metabolism and able to burn other things that shouldn't be in your body. And as strange as it sounds, your heart will literally pump blood at a higher rate, increasing your blood flow and breaking down bad circulation over time. Don't wait until you're on blood thinners to respond to this. The time to protect your health is now. Don't wait. Steve wished he had another day. If you really want to elevate your potential to the next level, then implement a routine of exercise. There are two things you should focus on when you're doing that first of all, cardiovascular training. And the second is muscle development. They both offer a lot of benefits. Cardiovascular training, for example, could be high paced walking, running, swimming, interval training and muscle development, for example, is going through exercises where you're actually working each of the muscle groups. That way you can control your weight, increase your stamina and become healthier. My personal routine is 20 minutes a day of daily cardio, roughly 35 minutes in the gym for workout. Focus on a specific muscle group for the day. Now, I've been working out for a little while now, so my ultimate outcome may be a little different than yours and goals may be a little bit different than yours. And I have to vary my style of workout outs pretty early to kind of reduce the chances of plateauing. But the most important thing is that you actually get started. Don't find yourself not moving and then paying for it later. Principle number get rest. I had to mention this one because in case you're even the slightest little bit like me, you're probably a lot like a doer and activity driven. And one of my personal health blind spots is often getting rest. Now see, I'm very much like go, go, go. And it has not been uncommon for me to do things for weeks on end and then completely crash. Occasionally my body will flat out say not today homie, and I'll get a common cold which actually slows me down for a few days. I actually had to force myself into a war one day a week rest cycle where my rest, my mind, my body and soul on a regular basis. Strangely, I found it to be the best time for reflection and connection. When there's no agenda, there's no rush, and when there's no rush, there's no chance to Smell the flowers and really replenish. So as you overhaul your personal wellness plan, make sure you honestly take time to include rest. That way you too can build your mind, your body and your soul and actually get the rest you need to kind of get moving. Avoid the lie of invincibility. Nobody is invincible to illness and some people simply take longer to get sick than others. Remember, your body is the machine that makes your dreams possible and it's very important that you give it rest so it can actually function properly and function at peak performance. Alright? Bonus Principle Number eight Consume Superfoods A superfood is a food that adds higher than normal value to your cognitive function, digestion and cardiovascular system. Here are just a few superfood items that I consume pretty much every day that help me operate at peak performance. Turmeric opens the blood flow. Apple Cider vinegar helps you digest better. Living Fuel Berry ultimate helps you get all the superfoods you need. Living Fuel Super Greens helps make sure I actually get the greens that I need because it's very difficult to get that with a common salad and then I also use a strong multivoc vitamin. I'll typically follow those superfoods up with intermittent fasting from time to time, great tasting salads and high quality free range proteins. That way I can be careful and cognizant about what I put in my body. Consuming superfoods regularly is an easy way to take your physical health to a whole new level. I hope you enjoyed these principles for improving your physical health. I know it was a ton of information, I apologize about that. But it's important information. You see, oftentimes people are so focused on their finances, their relationships or their careers that they completely forget and neglect their physical health without realizing it. And I don't want that to be you. I want you to live long, live happy and live healthy. And that way you can actually win and get to your dreams quicker.
