7 Principles To Maximize Your Emotional Health

This YouTube talk by Stephen Scoggins (Journey Principles Institute) presents seven actionable principles to maximize emotional health, framed as the emotional pillar that drives other life areas. The seven principles are: 1) create a plan (self-assess on a 1–10 scale and seek external perspective), 2) make self-care a priority (set boundaries, rest), 3) raise self-awareness (clarify gifts, triggers, values), 4) operate in your gifts and talents (work in your sweet spot), 5) grow confidence (compound small wins), 6) remove toxic/negative influences quickly, and 7) schedule weekly replenishment and rest. The talk emphasizes identity, boundaries, and practical daily habits and ends with a CTA to follow the channel for more pillar-based principles.

Last week I did a video of my top three principles for faster learning. And at the end of that video I mentioned that over the next several weeks I'll be giving you seven principles I used to win in every area of my life, and hopefully they can help you do the same. Here at the Journey Principles Institute, we've identified eight core areas of life, which we call the eight pillars of life. And in today's video, we're going to give you seven principles to maximize your emotional health. So stay tuned, you're not going to want to miss it.
When working on improving your life in any area, it's very important to start by focusing on the one area of life that truthfully drives everything else. We call it the emotional pillar of life because it deals with everything from your actual emotions, your attitudes, your beliefs, your senses of self awareness, and ultimately your overall identity. The problem is that the vast majority of the people who ignore this area of life altogether and wonder why their life doesn't really seem to change, even though they might get a new job or new relationship or some other improved set of circumstances, is because they don't know that this is happening. When you learn to be whole in yourself, you'll quickly discover that your outside circumstances have little to do with how you got here or how you're going to get there. It's been my experience that if you will put the seven principles to work for you, you will experience regular momentum, more contentment and a stronger sense of resilience overall. That way you can take yourself to a whole other level. So let's go ahead and jump in. Alright, Emotional principle number one, create a plan. If you've been watching this channel for any length of time, you may be tired of hearing me say create a plan, but the reality is you must have one. Without a plan, you can't actually get anywhere. You must know where you want to go and develop action steps to help you get there. As far as creating a plan for your emotional health, the first thing to do is gain some perspective. Ask yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 how emotionally mature you feel you are, and then ask a close friend. Rarely do ever those numbers actually match, but it's important to do both steps. The reality is we either rate ourselves much higher or lower than our friends would rate us. And those scores can give us some visibility on what to work on or what's needed by asking the next simple question. Why do our scores differ? If the scores are different, why is that? What do they see that you don't? This should Drive other questions that might need to be answered, such as how secure am I in my identity? How secure am I in my purpose? How secure am I in my overall sense of self worth and self esteem? What are some things that I may need to have resolved that haven't been resolved yet? As you begin to ask these important questions, you should begin to discover key focus areas to take your emotional life to a whole other level. It doesn't matter if you're a top achiever or someone who is still trying to find their way. We can all always make improvements in how we approach our overall emotional health in the world. So ask yourself, where can I improve most? Where can I get started? Alright, next up, principle number two, make self care an actual priority. It's important. The fact is that in some cases, people build their entire identity around serving others. Serving others is great, but like anything else, it has to be done in moderation, so to speak. Because too much of anything can actually kill you, figuratively and literally. And if you're finding yourself getting taken advantage of on a regular basis, just like I used to do, it's likely because you're not putting your physical and emotional needs first, which means you probably have broken or non existent boundaries altogether. That's just not good. Do something every day that helps strengthen your mind, your body and your soul. Give and serve when you have the emotional and the resourceful energy to do so. It's totally okay to excuse yourself from a difficult relationship or situation, however much time you need to ensure the boundaries are strong, your motives are pure, and it's not based on making someone like you, right? It's based on actual service. The most valuable people in your life will already consider you valuable before you have to earn their love and or affection. There's a great chance that there's a whole lot more than meets the eye. You may or may not have discovered it just for yourself just yet. Make sure you're taking time to take care of yourself. Make sure you're getting the rest that you need. And building on principle two, we have next up, principle three, Raise your overall sense of self awareness. Being self aware is far more than just opening your eyes and observing the life around you. When I say self, aware, what I mean is getting crystal clear on your gifts, your passions, your purpose, your strengths, possible blind spot, your natural values, some of your natural tendencies, potential negative triggers, communication roadblocks, things like that. You want to get crystal clear on who you are and how you're made. The reason raising your self awareness is a priority is because it is a pursuit that that takes time to develop and it will only develop with the time and energy you put into it. There's no one and done here. Instead, it's work you do on the inside of yourself to better yourself and increase your overall opportunities and emotional health. Which leads us to principle number four. Operate in your gifts and talents. Look, nothing can be more frustrating than trying to force yourself into a box. Especially when you're solely based on someone else's expectations of you. That is called control. If you're a natural builder, then build. If you're a natural painter, then paint. I personally try to operate my sweet spot when I'm sharing, teaching and molding big visions into reality. I'm not great with details and I don't try to make believe that I am. There are others who are very gifted in the very things that I truthfully hate doing. And the crazy part is they're passionate about doing it as well. We all have different gifts and talents. Once you're clear on your gifts and talents, you need to use them over and over, building muscle memory and simply do your best to let some of the one well, someone more qualified do the things that you're not good at. Like I do. Like I suck at editing. When we work with people, many of them are trying to be something they were never created to be. Which is why their lives are so full of dissatisfaction, frustration and pain. They end up discouraged. Instead of wasting decades being something you're not, why not become the best version of your uniquely gifted self and make your impact? Doing this allows you to develop the next principle, which we call principle number five. Grow in your confidence. Confidence grows as little wins compound. These wins give you confidence because you're becoming more and more authentic to who you actually are at your core. As your confidence grows, so do your positive attitudes, emotional beliefs, your emotional intelligence, and before long, you're healthy and emotionally sound, ready to take on the day. Alright, next up, principle number six. Remove toxic and negative influences as quickly as possible. Here's the thing. You can do amazing work on yourself and start to build confidence. Much Much like a weed tries to choke out a healthy plant, bad influences and situations can stop your newfound growth in its tracks. Avoid putting yourself in places where bad people or bad things can negatively impact your overall growth and trajectory. Instead, be intentional about where you spend your time and who you spend it with. And make darn sure it's adding value to your life. And if it's not, get rid of it.
Make time for weekly replenishment and rest Replenishment is vital to health, especially in the mind, the body and the soul. If you're tired, you're just not going to act right. Give yourself at least one day a week to wake up when you want and do the things that add, well, a charge to your battery, so to speak. For some people, this could be hitting the gym, for others, it may be going for a walk in nature. And still others might be actually enjoying a good book. Whatever it is for you, make sure it's important and make sure you allow yourself to decompress and get sittered routinely. So pick a day every week and make that day a priority for you. Self Care I'm confident that if you'll follow these seven principles, your emotional health will skyrocket and it'll give you a solid foundation to build on the other areas of your life because you'll be emotionally healthy and whole. Remember, taking care of your emotional health first will allow you to make much further progress faster in every other area of your life.
