DESTROY Negative Thoughts & Feelings TODAY

Stephen Scoggins survived homelessness and near-suicide with help from mentor Susan Batts. He teaches five concrete moves: change your self-talk, track small wins daily, try supplements like omega-3s and St. John's Wort, exercise to lower cortisol, and get better sleep. He frames it as rewiring your internal record player.

Negative thinking almost took me out. And I don't want that to happen to you. So stay tuned so you know how not to.
Look. I don't share this story all that often, but to be honest, there's a whole lot more to my story than just going from homelessness to building businesses. In fact, at my lowest point, I was almost ready to take my own life. And I mean that in the realest sense. And if it hadn't been for one of my high school girlfriend's mother who played a role as being a mentor to me, who actually clothed and fed me through part of my high school career, so to speak, I wouldn't have made it. In fact, I was on this bridge and I was struggling to actually try to make sense of the world. I had only known failure. I only known struggle. I'd only known poverty. I'd only known, like constantly having the rugs being slipped out from under me. So why was I going to stick around? Why not listen to the voice of failure on my left and let the whisper of like, no, you're a lie, you can do this thing on the right. Why not let that. You see what I'm saying? When it comes down to life, so many times we make decisions at our lowest moments, not realizing how could it, how it's going to affect us over our lifetime. And if it hadn't have been for Susan Batts. Susan Batts, AKA Mama Wama. Yes, she had a crazy nickname. It's long story, but essentially she nicknamed me Sugar Wooga and I nicknamed her Mama Mama. And that's how it became the thing. But if it hadn't have been for her, I would not be on this camera talking to you right now.
And I don't know what you're facing. I don't know what kind of adversity you've been through. I don't know what adversity is still in front of you. I don't know what relationship just ended. I don't know what your financial situation looks like. I don't know anything about you other than the fact that you deserve to win.
You deserve to be more than you think you are. You deserve to have the future that you build rather than the future that you've been dealt. The reason I know that is because that was my life. And if I can do it, you can do it, period. Drop the mic, baby.
You are more than you think, worth more than you think, and capable of more than you think.
But if you're going to break the cycle, you're going to have to break the thought.
Susan told me this. This too shall pass and what comes next will be greater. But she didn't leave it there. Not at all. While on that bridge, looking at the cars whirring beneath me, watching the smoke escape my breath on the cold night, smelling the diesel fumes, listen to the car hawks.
Susan told me this too shall pass and what comes next to be greater. But she didn't leave it there. I need you to do this with me. I need you to say this with me. Just like I'm about to say it.
This too shall pass and what comes next will be greater for me.
I need you to anchor there.
I need you to tie yourself to that. Because what you think is your potential in this moment, in the lowest moment maybe you're facing right now, is not that. It's your foundation. I learned a long time ago that the foundations of failure are actually the bedrocks of new beginnings. It was three weeks later that I started Che, my very first flagship company. That was 22 years ago at the time of this taping. 22 years. I never for a life of me thought I'd be talking to you. I never for a life of me thought I would write books. Never thought I would travel and speak. Never thought I would build businesses. Little old me, Mr. Failure. Come on.
High school dropout, homelessness, suicidal thoughts, almost taking a suicidal attempt.
Now. Now. The world that we have, the world that's around me. Come on, you got more in the tank. And don't you dare throw in the towel. Not now. No, absolutely not. I did not go through all that junk to learn all that I did for me not to share it with you. So you don't give up. You feel me?
If you're going to make it to the next level, you got to conquer the mind again. I don't know your adversity. I don't know if you were as close as I, as I was to just letting it end, all, be all, or if you're facing a mild adversity and you're just trying to fight through it. Doesn't matter. What matters is the negativity that's flowing through your mind. Flowing through your mind. Here's what I understood. Check this out. Our brains.
Are a lot like record players.
In that we choose which record is getting played.
If you look at your mind as a record player, so to speak, and I, for those of you who are super young and you don't know what a record player is, it's what we had long before, an MP3 and a CD and a cassette tape. It's where I first heard of Star Wars.
In essence, Whether it's an MP3 or record player, what you choose to play and listen to is the same exact thing that's going on inside of your head.
What are you choosing to listen to?
The voice of failure. The voice of low self esteem. The voice of low self worth. The voice of no one loves me. The voice of I don't know, I don't matter. The voice of I'm not seen. The voice of I'm not heard. The voice of no one really cares. What voice are you listening to?
It only took one voice to tell me I could be something that I didn't even think was possible.
And now that I far superseded what was put on me as a gift by Susan, I can honestly tell you right now, you've got to be careful. So number one is watch what you say to yourself.
What you say to yourself, you reinforce. As you reinforce becomes a closer anchor to your identity. There's an old saying I like to do when I travel and speak from time to time that says if you want to change the fruits of your life, the results, if you will, you've got to change the roots of your life. Which comes down to thinking.
The record player is the record on the machine.
What are you replaying? Is it stuck as it goes around? Nanam Nanum, nanum, nanum, nanum. Or is it a beautiful melody that's saying hope is possible. Potential is possible. Freedom is possible.
You have no idea what you're capable of, but I do. Because if I can do it, I know you can do it. No doubts whatsoever in my mind. All right, Number two. Remind yourself of your little wins.
Can I be real with you for just a second? Be fully transparent. Someday. For me, the little win was just getting up and taking another stab at the day.
Later on, it began being, hey, I'm getting closer to being out of debt. Then it began. I'm getting closer to being the person I want to be. Then it began. Hey, look, I think I'm getting pretty close to, like, having myself together, where I'm actually considering a healthy relationship after going through a bunch of toxic ones.
Whatever the little win is for you. The little win is like a trampoline. It's something you can bounce on over and over again until you get the altitude you need to grab the brass ring. Each one of those little wins builds up character. It builds up confidence, it builds up internal resolve, strength. It builds perseverance and perseverance as Bad as we hate it builds character, and character builds hope. You've got to reclaim your hope. You've got to lean into it like your life depends on it. You've got to believe that tomorrow is going to be better than yesterday, even if it's only done so incrementally. Every incremental change creates trajectory.
Every incremental change. Every day you decide to get up. This day set you on a course for the rest of your life. Every time you decide not to, you're going down. So get up, try again, reclaim your hope. Think about possibilities. Learn to imagine and dream. What would be your ideal life? How can you use that ideal picture to then start to lean into that? To say, what if I really applied myself? What if I really read the books? What if I really took the actions? What if I really watched the videos? What if I really got a mentor? What if I really cared about my outcome and wanted to have my life happen for me instead of against me? What if.
Watch what you say, build on little wins, and then go to number three. What does supplements got to do with your brain and the way you think? I can tell you honestly that when I escaped the bridge and I actually was starting to kind of believe just a little bit, just a little bit, that Susan was right, that when I thought my worst was happening, I was ready to give up, that somehow the Red Sea parted and all of a sudden I actually had a chance.
I still had to get to a place where I had healthy serotonin levels, right where I wasn't having up and down dopamine spikes. Okay? So I started taking a supplement. Now check with your doctor. I'm not giving you medical advice. I'm just telling you there are supplements that are herbal that can help. And one of Those is called St. John's Wort. St. John's Wort and Omega 3s actually feed your brain. St. John's Wort raises serotonin levels, right? Which takes you out of this feeling of despair and depression and all this stuff, or the world's coming against you begins to say, hey.
I might be able to take a step. I may be able to go a little further. I might be. And it takes you up the escalation.
Most people don't realize that most of their depression and their negative thinking is actually directly tied to the low amounts of nutrients their brain is actually getting on a regular basis. I can tell you that from personal experience. In my environment, coming by a meal wasn't really, well, routine for me for a while, which means I Had sporadic meals. Sporadic meals mean sporadic nutrients. Sporadic nutrients means low brain function.
Supplements helped me begin to build that up. I got to the place where I could afford some Mega man multivitamins at the local gnc, and I started taking the multivitamins and used that to begin to retool my brain, which then takes us to the next one. Okay, Exercise.
Exercise. Now, you would think on the surface that supplements and exercise have nothing to do with negative thinking, but it has everything to do with negative thinking because it has everything to do with lowering the cortisol level when your brain is under stress or when you're under stress, when you're in fear, when you're anxiety, when all of the negative things that are around you in your life are starting to bubble up and be stuck on this record player in your head are running through your brain on a consistent basis. Cortisol rises, muscle tissue declines.
You're out of balance. We've got to get you back in balance, okay? Exercise feeds the cardiovascular system. The cardiovascular system pumps more blood and nutrients through your veins and arteries like a. Like a servo mechanism like it's supposed to be, to allow your brain to have a higher state of function. Okay? So where as we're watching what we say, we're building confidence of what we've done, we're also feeding our brain what it needs to fire appropriately so we can actually make consistent progress in the way in which we think builds us to the next one, which is number five.
One of the reasons that I was so struggling so bad with my overall sense of self worth, my overall sense of failure, my overall identity, all the negative things that were coming through my head was because my machine itself was basically breaking down. There's this little tip on the end of a record player that if it's broken, the record doesn't play. There's a fulcrum on this arm here that if that's broken, the thing doesn't drop to actually turn on the record player. Okay? This is the machine. This is the record. Make sense. Rest and replenishment is a byproduct and happens a lot, especially when you're in stress and duress. It's hard to sleep, it's hard to rest because your emotions are going, okay. The trick is getting to a place where maybe some melatonin or another supplement, for example, might actually help relax you to a place to begin to work through your thoughts. Because in order to overcome negative thinking at its core, you're going to have to identify where the root is actually coming from typically our life circumstances, our negative thinking is a symptom of a deeper problem. However, most people, and this is where the I believe this is personal opinion that the pharmaceutical industry focuses the symptom. If we can make them numb, it's okay, you can deal. I don't know about you, but I don't want to just deal with life. I want to experience life in a positive way. So I want to get myself in a situation where I'm watching what I'm saying to myself and I'm watching what records on the record player. I'm focusing on my little wins. I'm building myself up so I can actually work on the root. And as I do that rest and replenishment comes becomes more and more part of my lifestyle. And over time the cortisol level comes way down, opportunities go way up and the next thing you know you're well on your way to beating the very mindset that you think is impossible to beat right now. And it happens a lot quicker than you think it possibly can. Just being real. Now I got one more thing that I really want you to understand when it comes to this record player kind of thing. I want you to see this real fast. Emotions.
Equal thoughts.
Thoughts, equal attitudes.
Equal actions. Okay. Equal results.
Equals outlook.
This process is known as CBT therapy.
Cognitive behavioral therapy.
It basically says that your emotion drive your thoughts. Now I personally believe that your thoughts drive your emotions. Alright. However, this process.
Is a fulfilling process. This process allows you to build faith. Faith over fear, possibilities over pain.
You've got more in the tank. I know you can do it. I want you to check out this video right here to keep you going.
