How To Elevate Your Emotional State

A short YouTube monologue by Stephen Scoggins about elevating one’s emotional state as part of life mastery. Scoggins defines emotional states as emotions made physiological, then outlines six key areas that shape emotion (youth, imagination, influences, experiences, environment, memory). He emphasizes contrast (knowing where you are vs. where you want to be) and recommends shifting from subconscious reactions to conscious actions—using techniques like pausing and brisk walks to interrupt negative emotion and create new, positive memories and habits.

Hey guys, I'm Steven Scoggins, and I'm here to help you make life mastery simple. So you can finally go from stuck to unstoppable in area of your life. But in order to do that, we need to focus on what takes our emotional state to a whole other level. When you look at your emotional state, the first thing that you're going to realize very quickly is that emotional states are nothing more than emotions themselves or emotions felt. So an emotion, for example, happiness, sadness, joy, passion, right? These types of emotion either propel us or steal from us on a regular basis. So an emotional state is nothing more than an emotion felt. So the thought has now become a physiological response. Now, the first thing you need to understand in order to elevate your emotional state is to actually take the time to understand how they're created in the first place. And as much, pretty much anything starts, it starts heavily with our youth as anything that you can possibly imagine. A lot of things in life start with our youth. For example, I had parents that struggled a little bit early on, okay, So I had surrogate parents in some ways. I had my grandmother who raised me a little bit. Then I had Steve Myrick, then I had Susan Batts. I had all these different mentors that became like surrogate parents to me. The reason that's important is because each one of those semblances gave me a specific style of which I was shaped. Because a lot of times we are shaped or modeled, our behavior, our emotional well being, how we see our emotions and the emotional responses we have is often a duplicate or a replication of where we learned it from in the first place. So if you grew up in a house where your mother or father unfortunately struggled with victim thinking or shameful, in other words, they constantly felt a sense of shame or sense of guilt. Then unknowingly, there's a good chance that you probably struggle with some of those same instances. Instances, some of which may come across as like anxiety, fear, depression. Those things can come from those areas, unfortunately, by osmosis. It's kind of like having a sponge and you put it in the water and you let go of the sponge and it soaks the water up. Well, if you pick the sponge up and you put it back in another dish and you squeeze the sponge, the same thing that came out of the first bowl is going to come out the second bowl. Your youth is a lot like that. You were a sponge, right? That's the best time to actually train a specific behavior system is when you're youth. So we want to take a hard look at how your youth played a role in shaping either your positive emotional states or your negative emotional states. All right, the next area we're going to look at, number two, is going to be your overall imagination. Your imagination has more to do with what you believe you could achieve, what you believe is possible. And if you grew up in a difficult household like I did early on, where there's not a lot of opportunity, not a lot of shaping, then your emotional state, your emotional well being is probably going to have a sense of lack or a sense of lack of possibility. Why? Because your influences on this side are kind of coming from that area. Right. As we're trying to look at how these things are shaped, it's important to understand these key areas because if you want to elevate these level levels, then you're gonna have to elevate the way in which you view things. All right, the third thing, and I'm not gonna spend a lot of time on this because we've done entire whiteboard lessons on influences alone, but other influences that also played a role in how you see yourself or how you see yourself in situations. A situation, let's put that here on this fictitious whiteboard while I'm facing you guys, okay. Is directly correlated with. To your emotional attitude or the emotional response that you feel when a semblance like this happens. For example, people who struggle with. We'll use PTSD as an example. People who struggle with ptsd, their emotional response is directly tied to a previous traumatic experience. Okay, that's what I'm getting at with these influence categories. How can we find, remove and replace, Find, remove and replace bad experiences with much more stable and passionate ones? Okay, the next thing we're going to do is we're going to look hardcore, number four, at the experiences. What have you experienced to date? How did that experience shape how you basically look at the world, what lens you use, your experiences? For example, when I was homeless and living in a car, it was very difficult for me to ever possibly believe that I would ever have the ability to actually own companies, let alone one company, let alone multiple or lead people. It was the furthest thing from my mind. Instead, my emotional state was so focused on just trying to survive that I was stuck in survival mode for almost five years. And when you're stuck in survival mode alone for a period of five years, you have a lot of negative habits and a lot of negative emotions that you have to break through and break free from so you can actually go on and live the life you were meant to live. All right? So we want to make sure that we take the time to digest the experiences we've been through. The next thing environment. The next thing you have to consider is your overall environment. Not just the environment that brought you from here to there, but also the environment that you currently have today and the type of environment that you want to have when you move forward. Each one of those environments, right. Will keep you in a steady state or a steady emotional state. Here's what I mean by that.
In my past, I struggled to make ends meet on a regular basis, okay? Which led me to believe that I constantly had to struggle and strive in order for me to earn a high level of income or just to cover my basic needs in my present day. My financial area is pretty stable at this point in time, as you can imagine. But I also know that I want to make a larger impact. The emotion that I had here of survival or trying to survive or struggle, if you will. You know, the lack the cup is always half full is not going to serve me when I'm trying to catapult my future to a whole nother level, okay? So when you look at that, you're looking at your overall environment. Before, present, after. The next thing is your overall memory, right? So number six, memory. When I say memory, I mean two types of memory. Memories that you have that have shaped who you are, that when things happen, you feel a need to do X or the type of memory you actually want to create for yourself.
So much of life mastery is contrast. It's knowing where you are today and knowing where you want to be, right? It's knowing what got you here, knowing what you need to do to go here. Almost all life mastery principles, it doesn't matter which influencer you listen to or which teacher you listen to. Almost every single life mastery principle you will ever have in your life comes from this place of contrast, okay? And then it's no different when you're looking at your overall emotional state and trying to elevate it. So now that we understand the cycle of how these things work together, we can better understand about what happens next.
The one thing that you need to do differently if you want to elevate your emotional state is this.
Don't operate from subconscious. Do operate from conscious action. And here's what I mean. The negative emotions you feel sends you to the attitudes that you have, which makes you take a subconscious reaction which gives you a negative result, okay?
Anytime you operate from your subconscious, again, you are using the skill set that you learn from the other end of the contrast spectrum. We need to move you towards the front side. Right. So what's different? The biggest difference is being self aware, knowing what you feel and when and then choosing to step away for a second. Okay, I will tell you that owning a business is There's a lot of strife, a lot of conflict, a lot of struggle. From time to time, different team members. Not getting along, myself not understanding specific points of view. It's important that you understand that in order to actually get from one place to the next, it goes from subconscious to conscious. So what I want to do is I want to take a pause anytime I feel an emotion welling up inside of me that I feel like it's going to overtake me before it creates a physiological response. When I fear anxiety, for example, if I even feel the slightest little bit of butterflies in my stomach, like it's getting uncontrollable, I'm going to do my best to stop what I'm doing and go for a brisk walk.
Just so I can let that energy out. Those are different techniques that help me pause so I can gain understanding and wisdom. I can build a bridge from the past emotional experience to shaping the emotions I want to have in the future, which then gives me a pleasurable experience, which then gives me a new memory, which then allows me to imagine better things and choose better influences.
In order for you to win at life, you got to be able to maintain and control you in such a way that you choose your actions instead of your actions choosing you. I hope that helps.
