How To Take Inventory Of Your Life

Stephen Scoggins teaches a step-by-step approach to "taking inventory" of your life to gain clarity and direction. He urges a holistic review across eight life areas (the "Eight Pillars of Life") and provides guided prompts: assess your current state; list frustrations, overwhelming issues, excitements, what keeps you up at night, and what breaks your heart. He emphasizes that self-awareness builds self-confidence and that identifying missing information and core drivers helps avoid self-sabotage. Scoggins names four needs that commonly drive behavior—the need to be seen, heard, valued, and affirmed—and recommends prioritizing "what matters most now" to set focus and intensity. He references a free ebook/resource (journeyprinciples.com) and a related video for deeper work.

I believe the number one thing, the number one thing that holds most people back in getting started is actually not understanding where they're beginning at all. In this video, we're going to break down how to take inventory and actually see how it applies to your life to help you succeed.
Alright? As I mentioned, taking inventory is incredibly important. Taking inventory is something that most of us don't do. Now I actually learned this particular principle specifically from Daymond John, and Daymond John learned it from his mom. And you know, if his mom says it, it's got to be right. So let's take a second and let's start to take some inventory on how to shape your life. Alright? Step one we're going to get into is where am I at right now? Most of us don't spend enough time and enough emphasis in actually focusing on the areas of life that matter the most to us. Now, while I totally agree in focusing on specific areas of your life, it's more important to go ahead and do a holistic approach and look at all eight areas of your life. Now if you don't know the eight areas I've spoken of, I'm going to, I want you to take the time to watch another video called the Eight Pillars of Life where we break that down in detail. But for the time being, consider your professional career, your relationships, your finances, your personal growth, your spiritual life. All of these different areas require focused intensity and focused attention. So I want to know, and you want to know, where am I at today? Where am I at today? Think about it this way. If you're going to build a machine, right? The ultimate driving force, right? The ultimate choo choo train of life, so to speak. The ultimate locomotive that's never stoppable, right? The unstoppable approach. Then this taking inventory is going to be one of the first calls you're going to do. Okay? Meanwhile, as we're doing that, we want to go ahead and go into the next area. For this example, we're going to start with the things that drive us nuts. All right? So I want you to list out what frustrates you right now. What types of things are frustrating you with your finances, what types of things are frustrating you with your romance, what types of things are frustrating you with your personal development, and so on and so forth. By identifying the things that frustrate you, you're beginning to get clearer on, on some of the things that need your improvement. Which gives us another cog in the wheel, if you will. Okay, next one, we're going to Start with what overwhelms you? What are the things that drive you nuts? I mean, in the sense that every time you think of it, every time it's happening, every time it's like coming out of your brain, so to speak. You get the sense of anxiety and the fear and that's an overwhelming feeling. Alright, so let's list out the types of things that are actually overwhelming you right now in those eight areas I mentioned before. Alright, now as we do that, we're going to also get into what excites us. What types of things drive passion? What types of things drive purpose? What types of things drive uniqueness? What types of things excite you? Is it hanging out with quality people? Is it a great book? Is it teaching a course? What types of things bring the most joy? I want you to list those things out each of these. Consider one to five items for each one of these. Okay, now we're gonna get another cog in the wheel. What keeps you up at night? What keeps you up at night? Ironically, this one's probably the easiest one to answer for a lot of people. Why? Because it's keeping you up at night. For a lot of folks, it's the financial burden of trying to provide for a family, but maybe not having the resources to do so. It may be the fact that maybe you just had a sincerely difficult breakup and all you desperately want to do is be in a relationship with someone who cares. Cares as much about you as you care about them. But these types of things are important. They're going to give us more awareness as we're kind of going through this. Remember, the trick to getting truly self confident is becoming truly self aware. Again, the trick to becoming truly self confident is becoming truly self aware. That's just why we're going through this example. All right, that's another cog in the wheel. As we kind of go around, we're going to do the other cog in the wheel. Okay. What types of things kind of break your heart? That may seem like an odd question at first until you understand that a lot of your passions and your purposes are actually hidden in there. For example, if you struggle with inequality, people that are, that are obviously getting mistreated or something like that, there's a passion point there. Maybe it's with the hunger of the world. Here's what I mean by that. Does it bother you when people don't have enough to eat? Okay. These types of things bring more awareness to who you are and what you're really created to do. So as we look at the things that break your heart. What are the types of things like that? Some of the things that break my heart are people are suffering and they're stuck in their lives simply because they don't know any better. That's it.
Steve Meyek told me a long time ago, my first mentor, the only difference between somebody who's rich in every area of their life and poor in every area of their life is the way they think. What piece of information do you need? What piece of information would make all the difference? That's where this question comes into play. Okay, now, what's driving you currently? What's driving you? Now this would be a good time for me to tell you about a resource that I've got@journeyprinciples.com resources and we'll also link it in the description below, which is a free ebook called Understanding what drives you inside of that will be a tool to help you understand many of the things that are currently driving you. Okay, that being said, I want to talk about four specific types of needs that tend to drive most of our behaviors. And the first one is the need to be seen. If you grew up in an environment like I did, where it was very difficult to kind of be out front or be seen or be kind of affirmed in that, in that scenario, then you probably have a unique desire to be seen. The problem is, if you're striving to be seen in an ineffective way or harmful way, then you are probably doing the self sabotage approach. All right, the next one is the need to feel heard. A lot of people who grew up in a suffocating environment where somebody else is very controlling and even manipulative in some cases have things that they want to share, expressions they want to have, ideas they want to have, visions they want to share, but it was suppressed. Do you have a need to be heard? Next one. Do you have a need to be valued? Does your current professional environment or even your household or your friends and family, do all of these areas allow you to feel like you have a sense of value to them? Do you believe that you actually have some level of significance? Do you have a level of meaning when you go to look at these specific areas? What we're looking for specifically is do I feel like I have value in the world? All right, and the fourth one is this. The need to be affirmed. The need to be affirmed. We all, and I do mean all, you can, you can. You might be lying to yourself right now where you're trying to say, well, no, I don't need it. Yes, you do. You need to know that someone outside of yourself knows that you're making an impact and you're doing a good job. Now, some of that affirmation comes through words of affirmation. Some of it goes through acts of service. Some of it comes through hugs. These different areas are the areas of being affirmed. Everyone has the need to be affirmed, so why not lean into it and understand it Again, these four needs, if left unchecked, will drive self sabotaging behaviors, which is what we don't want. Which is why we're going to spend some time again with this other cog. Understanding what drives you. I think the last thing that we need to look at hardcore and taking inventory is the last thing here. It's the next cog in the wheel. Okay, what matters most to you in this moment?
What matters right now? Is it to eliminate financial stress? Is it to have the quality relationship? Is it just to feel like someone sees you and hears you and affirms you? What matters to you right now? The reason we want to ask that question is because here we get direction.
When you understand how to take inventory in your life, what you're really doing is you're beginning to hone in how to actually get direction on what intensity and what focus needs to be applied in any given area. Again, if you haven't had a chance to check out the eight pillars of life, which is the eight areas of life that I've mentioned that you need to ask these questions of, I invite you to do so. That video is here on YouTube for your pleasure. Make sure you take the time to do this. Take inventory assessment. By taking inventory, you're getting clear on the direction you're heading and what's needed.
Which will tell you exactly what other videos inside of here on YouTube that you need to go look at. Again. I mentioned this earlier, but the free ebook Understanding what Drives you is also right here for your enjoyment. Check it out. Start winning. I'll see you in the next video.
