Welcome to the Journey Principles, where we show you how to go from stuck to unstoppable with life strategies that work. Now, here's your host and creator of the Transform youm Framework, Stephen Scoggins.
Hey, guys. Welcome back to the Journey Principles. We're coming to you live from our live event center here in Rock, North Carolina. And we are crazy excited you've taken the time to join us. And if this is your first time here, this podcast is all about helping you go from stuck to unstoppable in every single area of your life. I'm your host, Stephen Scoggins, and joining me today in the studio is a young man I believe in greatly. He's our director of connections, Connor Kraft, who's going to kick us off with today's featured topic. So what are we talking about today, my friend?
Well, today's podcast is all about your origin story, also known as your past, and how it could be holding you back. And then last week, we talked about. Gosh, what did we talk about last week? We talked about your favorite thing. That is my thing. Yeah. It was grow. Right. And the number one thing that really holds people back. So now we're talking about your origin story and how that could hold you back. So that's. That's really exciting.
Well, as we mentioned last one, this is. This is kind of my favorite one because I'm, you know, fortunately for me, this is part of my story.
Why is this your favorite topic to teach, by the way?
Well, you know, I think one of the reasons it's one of my favorite topics is because it's so I. I learned. I'm kind of. I'm kind of a stubborn hardhead. Right? So pretty much everything that I learned, I learned the hard way. And when it came to changing my life and transforming every area of my life and going from homelessness to where I'm at today and all this kind of stuff, one of the greatest mistakes I ever made was not realizing that my past had everything to do with my present. So I had no idea that my past had shaped so many areas of my life that were actually controlling my thoughts. Way in which I was taking actions, the way in which I was developing relationships. You know, some relationships seem to skyrocket. Others seem to, like, completely explode and fall apart all at the same time. And when I finally began to reflect a little bit, I finally uncovered that the origin story itself, we all have one. So we all have a beginning. You know, we were all born at a certain time in our life, you know, and Then I remember I was watching Star wars, of all things, and I was watching the. I always get the episodes wrong because they're a little bit out of order as far as how they released them.
Oh, yeah, that is confusing.
But this young. This young man named Anakin Skywalker was the sweet. Was the sweetest kid, loved his mom. It's like, we'll do anything for you. And, yes, you're probably hearing some music in the background. We do have a live event going on while we're trying to do the podcast.
Yep.
And you can thank Coronavirus for that. So, anyway, so. But we're going to give you some content anyway. But no, I mean, Anakin Skywalker was this. This really sweet kid, really pure heart. Right. And in the movie, it's hard to believe that one day this young man becomes Darth Vader. Right. So what happened? How did. How did Anakin become Darth Vader? And if you contrast that with your life, you can look back right now at any stumbling blocks that you have, any areas that you're stuck in your life, whether it be your finances or your relationships or whatever, and you can dig in deep and find out that that belief system, that way in which you approach the world, came from somewhere.
So basically, the results that you're getting today are a result of your past in a way.
Well, they're influenced. I wouldn't say they're the result of, but they're definitely influenced by. Okay, Right. So every decision that you make, everything that you do. Right. Comes from a set of belief systems. You make decisions a specific way at a specific time, based on who you are at today's date.
Got it.
Right. So, for example, I used to struggle heavily and still do from time to time when taking constructive criticism. Right. I used to become incredibly combative, even though I needed it. And I would become incredibly combative knowing that I needed it.
Why?
Well, again, that comes from the belief system. Okay, Right. So it comes from control and a few other things. But here's the question I want you to ask yourself, and maybe we'll ask the audience here. When was the last time that you've actually taken an honest look at who you are and how you got here? When was the last time you actually thought about or if ever have you considered your actual personal origin story? So, in working with me, Connor, how is your. How is your current situation been shaped? If I asked you to take a pen and pad out, what are the top three things from your past that you can think about or that you would consider that has Shaped you to today.
It's a really good question. Are you asking me that question?
I'm asking everybody that question. So everybody else is pondering it.
I'm gonna take some time to think about it too. That is a loaded question. I mean, I guess I, right now, today, am still. I look at myself as on this journey to become the person who I believe that I was put on this earth to be. And I have a vision in my mind of where I want or who I want to become. Ye and I have a lot of ideas of kind of how I would get there. No idea how it's all going to come together. And I'm just along for this journey. I'm trying to surround myself with all the information I can and the people and the tools and the resources to be able to hopefully get there in the next 10 to 20 years. I'm trying to think ahead.
Let me ask you this before you go much further, all right. Because this all plays into what we're talking about today. The person that you think you were created on this earth to be, where did that desire or that image of who that person is come from?
That's a good question. So back When I was 15, 16 years old, I discovered entrepreneurship. I started a couple of small, like software marketing.
One was actually really successful at 15.
One of them did pretty well for a 16 year old. Yeah, so. So, you know, I've always been kind of like an entrepreneurial kid. I was selling. I was selling piano CDs at like 8 years old. And because you can play piano, I discovered I could play piano. So I kind of, I played piano and would make up these songs that I was selling to my mom's friends.
Yeah. And.
And then I flipped Xboxes and PS3 and gaming consoles on Craigslist for a little bit. Yeah, dude, it was, it was. That was between the ages of like 11 and 13 or 14 and the.
Gateway drug to flipping real estate.
It really was a drug to entrepreneurship because I was. I realized that I could, through coming up with a smart strategy, I could make money and I could actually like produce things. So I was like, this is really fun. And then I got into online marketing, got into some network marketing for a little bit. Some MLM got networked with some of the really, really successful people in mlm. I a little lucky there because a lot of the people you get with in that industry typically aren't, sorry to say, but there are some legitimate badass entrepreneurs in that industry.
So anyway, so kind of got involved with all that and they kept saying, dude, you're an entrepreneur, dude, you need to be an entrepreneur. And that stuck with me and I just decided, I was like, dude, that sounds awesome.
I'm supposed to be an entrepreneur.
Well, and so, yeah, that's kind of where I'd say it all began. And once I started having that little bit of success at 16 and I was making more money than any 16 year old really should, as you know, that young and I was being told by everyone, hey, you should be this entrepreneur, I just kind of fell in love with it.
Yeah.
And I was like, why would I want to do this normal way? Just for me personally, I was going to school, trying to get a degree for, you know, potentially a job that I didn't even know what it was going to be in. I didn't know what I wanted to do in my life. And then here fell on my lap this thing that I seem to be doing.
I'm glad you actually mentioned that because one of the things that I was, when I was trying to prepare for today's topic, I was thinking, okay, what was my mindset? Like, what is the mindset of the average person every day that is trying to figure their life out or trying to figure out what their calling is, or trying to figure out what their purpose is and things of that nature? And here's what I actually jotted down. I used to think that my opportunities were based on how people responded and treated me rather than how I responded and treated myself.
Let me let that sink in real quick. So you used to think. Sorry, say that again.
Yeah, so I used to think that my opportunities, my possibilities, all of that had more to do with how people treated and responded to me instead of how I treated and responded to myself. Okay, so here's what I meant by that. In today's episode, we're talking about the origin story, right? What I'm going to share with everybody and hopefully teach everybody today is the importance of while everybody pouring into you is good, having people speak, life over you is fantastic. I also want you to sit down and take time to look into your own self, look into your own identity, look into your own purpose, and actually figure out from your perspective who you say you are, how you say you were created, what you were say you were created through.
Is this so now here's a question. What about for the people who don't know?
Well, we're going to get there too.
Because I didn't know before I discovered this. I kind of fell apart.
Which is another reason why we're Doing this particular episode, which is another reason why I love it so much. Think about this. The only reason Anakin Skywalker ever became, ever even got off the planet to become a Jedi. And then later Darth Vader. Right. The only reason is because Qui Gon Jinn came up to him and said, you're a Jedi. You're a Jedi.
Yeah.
And he's like, I'm a what? Because he knew, he. I mean, but he knew internally that.
He knew he was met, destined for something.
He knew he was destined for something else. He knew he was destined for more. He knew that he had a natural gifting towards mechanics. You see what I'm saying? There's so, there's gifts, talents and strengths that are hidden inside of everybody. Okay.
And he was broke. He was like a slave.
Yeah.
He just, he. But he was like, look, get me out of here. Yeah.
Next podcast episode. I know in our next podcast, you really want me to share my story.
Yeah.
And my story kind of resonates with him, right? A little bit. Right. What I'm trying to get everybody to understand is if you focus on, only on what other people say about you, then you will never fully know you.
What about the story that you told yourself in the past? Does that play into your origin story as well?
Exactly. We're gonna get into all that.
Perfect.
All right, so here's some things that kind of came out of that mindset. When I finally uncovered that I was basing my entire identity, my significance, my self worth, on what I was hearing other people say about me. Right. So if you're in a loving, very loving childhood and all this kind of stuff, you're in a. Got a lot of great friends, relationships, you're growing up in a great area, you're probably going to grow up with a reasonably healthy identity. Okay. Unless you've got a brother and sister that your parents, for whatever reason, doted on and doted on and doted on, and you were kind of left out. Right. I'm talking. The environment is okay, the environment's set. You're good, they're good.
So if your childhood went well, basically you had a good family life, you had some good relationships, you have a.
Stronger likelihood of having a stronger identity.
Would that, would that also play into mindset? Like, would that person be more likely to have a stronger mindset for success?
Well, mindset covers so many different things. It would influence how their mind is shaped.
Okay. Right.
But there's so many different things that go into mindset. We'll do, we'll make sure we do a podcast.
I guess I'm just curious, what do you define as identity?
I'm so glad you asked. We're going to cover that today as well.
Awesome.
All right, so.
But again, what I want people to understand is for the sake of today's episode. Right. I want you to focus on doing the research within yourself. Be completely open minded. No judgment, no condemnation, none of that stuff. But be completely open minded into going backwards so you can go forwards. Because what I uncovered in my life was some of my identity issues, my self worth issues, and some of my lackluster possibilities, or what I thought possibilities could be, was solely defined on what people were speaking over me and when I was growing up.
That's powerful. So what. What is. What would you say is the biggest thing that you want people to get from this podcast today as a takeaway?
Well, I think I'm giving four specific takeaways, but I wanted to. What I wanted to do first is I wanted to take the time to set the stage of why it's so important when I look back at what later became success for myself. Okay. Or what people, some people would deem as success. Meaning I got financial security, I'm in. I'm in a loving marriage, I got great kids. Right. I honestly couldn't be any more thankful than I am today. Right. I'm very grateful for what? The life I'm allowed to live today. Right. When I look back, hindsight being 20 20, this was a pivot point for me. Doing this work became the starting point of my transformation.
So when you actually looked back at your past and your origin story, as we've dubbed it, and you did the work of identifying these things that you're about to talk about and really getting clear on how you got to where you are, that was really, really impactful for you.
It's more than impactful. It changed everything.
Wow.
Because your entire, you know, like last week, we spent so much time on the grow process and grow process, step number one is gain perspective. Yeah, Right. What we're teaching you today, specifically, big part of game perspective, how to gain perspective.
I see. Okay, cool.
Okay. So I wanted to start to break this down. This is one reason I love the origin story so much, because it is the starting point. When you understand how you got to where you are, you also realize that you can plan where you want to go. It's a shaping. Okay, so here's what I think. Sorry. So here's another thing that I learned. And we'll jump into the steps because Everybody's itching to get to them. Every Darth Vader has a hidden Anakin Skywalker hidden inside. Right. Anakin Skywalker wanted to love the world, grow the world, build a world. Darth Vader wanted to destroy it. Okay.
Kind of technically, he wanted to ranch for his wife.
What I'm saying is. But yeah, you either you're either adding value to the world you're in or the community that you're in, or you're subtracting value from the community that you're in.
Right.
You're doing one or the other. Okay. What I want to inspire people to do is I want them to add value, but I want them to add value in their sphere of genius. Their, their sweet spot. Their. You mentioned it earlier where you said, hey, look, this, these guys came to me and they said, you're an entrepreneur. And I'm like, yeah, I'm getting success in it. I must be an entrepreneur. All that I believe is actually.
And then the next thing I did was I went and spent six years trying and failing miserably to be an entrepreneur because I thought that was what I needed to be.
Yeah.
And then that created a lot of self worth issues because your identity was.
Tied to that belief.
Yes. And so then when I struggled at it for six years, I came to you nine months ago and I was like, dude, I don't know where to go from here.
Yeah.
Like I've been told I need to be an entrepreneur. I believe that's what I want to do. But I'm not making a lot of money. Yeah, I'm struggling.
Well, when you think about it, when you're in that level, the only place you can go is up.
Well, that's, that's a good way of looking at it. It's just hard to look at everything around you and be like, is this, is this where I'm going to end?
This is where experience comes into play. Right. As a people, we like to be impatient with what we're doing. We like to focus on everything we're going. Like, we spend so much time trying to get to the next thing that we stop to reflect on how we got there or the present.
The present that we don't do that.
What? We spend so much time like focused on the future. Right. Like way in the future, not like a year in the future. I'm talking like five, 10 years. Like, I need to be a multi billionaire in 10 years.
Oh, you mean like, well, why? Who haven't made a hundred grand yet? Yeah, we're talking a Billionaire.
Yeah. Why?
I've done that.
Why? I mean, why? Think about it. Why do you need it? Well, most people need it because their identity is tied.
There was ego and I was. Was from. I had self esteem issues. And so I used this. Oh, well, I'm meant to be this super successful entrepreneur and that's how I'm gonna fill this hole that I had. Because, you know, growing up, I didn't feel very accepted by my peers. I'm sure a lot of you can relate. That's a pretty common thing. Yeah, I did.
I mean, I had a hard time.
So I had this self worth issue and I was like, well, you know what? That's okay. Cause I'm gonna be this super successful guy and I'm gonna go show all of them. And I thought that's a real healthy way to just place your energy. And it's not. Don't do that because, yeah, it causes a lot more harm.
Good. You were focused on what other people were saying about you, other than what you were saying about yourself. And that's what I'm trying to get people to understand from this particular podcast. If you get nothing else from this podcast, you got to get super clear on what you want to say about yourself. Because if you can't get clear on what you say about yourself, you will never actually have a true identity. Which means your hidden Jedi, if you will, will never come to fruition. And I want everybody's hidden Jedi to come to fruition in their lifetime because that sets up a whole other generation of Jedis.
That's awesome. That's an awesome quote right there. I like how one of the things you talked about is when you're talking about the people who we serve at Transform you, you. You said something along the lines of we don't just care about you, we care about the generations hidden inside of you, which is essentially what we know. That if we change one life, if we change your life, you're going to go out and change five more.
We're counting on it.
And those five people are going to change five more. And through that process, we're hoping that, you know, we might personally only touch what you know. Our goal is a million lives. Let's say we transform a million lives. That'll quickly Snowball. Snowball into 100 million is basically the goal.
Exactly. And I'm glad you brought that up, because I think far too many people don't understand that there's generations inside of you. Every man will most likely become a father or an uncle or grandfather. At some day in his time.
And you're going to influence the next generation.
Exactly.
In the next generation.
If you have struggled all your life with self worth issues, if you don't focus on getting what we're trying to teach you, then unfortunately, when the time comes for you to be a father, a mother, an uncle, an aunt or aunt, depending how you say it, you are unfortunately going to take all the stuff that's inside of you and pour it into somebody else.
You're going to pass that on, which.
Means you create generational faith community calls generational bondage. I call it generational pain.
So that's, that's. Is that something similar to. If you have somebody who's, let's say a family limit lineage that's lived in poverty for generations, then all they're going to literally believe, they grow up into that and they believe, oh, I can't escape the hood.
That's my life. I lived it. I lived it.
So how did you escape?
Well, how I. Well, all right, so what to do? Today's point, right, Is understanding your origin story. So I want to break down four steps. I think that will help you uncover your origin story. Okay.
I guess we could talk about how he escaped. Next week on the Stephen.
Yeah, he's like so interested in how I got.
So I'm glad you asked about all this stuff. It is a step by step process.
The first step is gaining perspective.
The first step is gaining perspective. And the first thing you have to gain perspective on is your origin story. You need to know how you got to where you are today. Alright. So when I think about that, the first step in understanding your origin story is knowing the attributes or the parts and pieces of an origin story. Okay. So take time, feel free to jot this down. Maybe I'll have Connor created a nice little downloadable PDF to make this a little bit easier. But here are the six things, the six things that you need to understand about your origin story. And by the way, for those YouTube subscribers, feel free to go and go to the whiteboard lesson where we actually talk about your origin story in detail. Because these six items are there and I expound upon those in that video.
Yes, for sure.
Meanwhile, step or the first step is understanding the origin story. Right. The first piece of the origin story is understanding your influences. So deep dive into YouTube video. I highly recommend you go check that out.
I think that might actually come out chronologically tomorrow from when this airs. Oh, check. I'm not 100% sure, but. But there will be. You're planning All I believe it'll be whiteboard lesson episode 004. Yeah, which it should be the whiteboard lesson called your origin story.
Right, so, so all right, so we'll break that down. But influences. So things parental influences, environmental, subliminal. Like these are types of influences that you don't under. You don't. Until you want to pay attention to them, you have they. You don't not even present there, working through your life. Right. So all right, next one is environment. What environment you grow up in, like geographically, Was it a trailer park like myself? Was it inner city? Was it Beverly Hills? So all this piece of environment.
So once I back you up real.
Quick, you're way too far away from your microphone.
Okay, sorry. So for influences. So just to summarize what influences are real quick. So your influences are parental influences, people around you, books you read.
There's. There's a. Alright, so again I want to recommend everybody go check out the origin story YouTube clip. The reason is, is because I break these down individually in detail for the sake of time, which only have about 10 minutes left for today's show.
You're just going to touch on them.
I'm going to hit, I'm going to hit the highlights just so we can actually get it out.
Okay, so there's six things.
There's six things. Got it. Influences is number one. Environments is number two. Experiences is number three. Because even if you have the same influences, the same environment, if your experiences inside of those influences and environments are different, you will have a different path.
Can you give me an example real quick?
So my brother and I, for example, okay. We came from the same background, the same parents.
Right?
Right. He didn't end up homeless, but I did because I had a different set of experiences than he did.
I see.
All right, so.
So the first two are more so like your upbringing. So your environment you were raised in.
It'S everything in that. Which is why you had. You have to hit the YouTube. Yeah, for sure.
And then experiences.
Experiences that will then shape the fourth area, which is value systems and beliefs. Okay. Which is how you perceive the world in today's environment.
That's a lot of mindset stuff.
It's a lot of mindset stuff. Which is why again, why I want to recommend that people go check out the other video. Your choices. Right. Everybody has had. I can raise your hand out there if you've ever made a choice that you wish you didn't. Oh, exactly. Right now raise your hand if you've made some pretty awesome choices that really kind of bear some, some serious fruit in your life. Right. Everybody has those. Everybody has the bad and the good. Right.
Some people don't want to look at the good or the bad. Some people are selective.
They're too focused on either staying stuck or moving forward. Right. You have to be objective in your approach to analysis. Right. When you're analyzing, when you're not really analyzing, you're evaluating your life and how you got to where you are. You got to be open minded, objective, no condemnation, no judgment. And look at these areas, seriously. And then look at the, the final area, which is the results that you got. Okay. What results did or what influence. How did influence shape your environment? How did environment shape your experiences? How did experience shape your values? How did your value shape your choices? And how did your choices shape your results?
Wow. It just builds on top of cause and effect.
Yeah, exactly.
So those six things. Guess suppose. I suppose technically, in order, they all fit together like a puzzle to create your origin story, which is essentially just your past up until this point.
Exactly.
And how you got here, which I believe will, unless you do something about it, continue keeping you in the same trajectory, which is why it's so important to understand.
That's exactly right. And alright, so if step one is to just know what's in the bucket. We've already identified what's in the bucket. Again, if you want to deep dive.
Those are the six things you need to do.
Go to YouTube Journey Principles with Steven Scoggins. You guys can check that out. I think you said it was video 004. If for some reason the numbers are.
So it might be 03.
Either way, it's called understanding your origin story. So it's there or origin story. So check that out. Meanwhile, step two is reflect on your origin story. Okay, so we've identified what we need the buckets we need to look at. Now we need to take the time to look in each one of these buckets. Alright. And here's some of the ways in which I prefer to look at these. First of all, I like to look inside out, meaning I like to look on the things within me before I look. I like to look at the people or the places or the things or the experiences that come at me.
Got it. So you focus on you as a person first before you focus on how the world and your environment around you affects you.
Yeah. Okay.
Now if you reason why you did it, do that.
I do it because it puts the perspective in the proper prioritization. It helps me prioritize the information that I'M receiving because if I look outside first rather than inside out, if I look at the outside first, and I'm going to be basing my perspective and all my judgments on what people did to me around me or near me, like, Right.
And that's more of like outlook. Totally experiential mindset.
Yeah. People who struggle looking only on the outside, unfortunately struggle with victim thinking. Okay. Someone's always out to get them something's. And you got to get out of that mindset.
It's a lack of personality.
And I've been in that mindset for a long, long time. I spent way too much time, you know, that kind of stuff. I came from a broken home. Because I came from a broken home, I'm a victim. I'll never be out in the mountain. Like there's. It's all garbage, right? So I'm trying to teach people how to do is to take the garbage out. Right? If you want to change your life, take the garbage out. It's that easy. Alright. Step two, reflect on your origin story. I like to ask these questions. Who is my inner enemy?
What does that mean?
There's an old Chinese proverb that says if you'll conquer the enemy within, then the enemy without will never do you any harm.
Okay.
Okay. So the person who is whispering in your ear, meaning your mindset, your mind. Right. We'll get into seven enemies of identity later. But the person, the beliefs you think about yourself determine the actions that you take for yourself.
So your inner enemy could be the voice in your head, that saying, that's.
All it is, your inner enemy. But that inner enemy's statement is coming from somewhere else.
Okay.
It's coming from an experience, it's coming from an influence.
I see.
It's coming from the areas within the bucket. Right. So the trick is, is to make sure you take the time to digest it and see what's going on there. All right. The next one is the opposite of that, which is, what do you want your inner hero to look like? So once you understand who your enemy is, now you can work on combating that enemy. But on top of that, you have to understand what does it look like to be a Jedi?
So how do you actually identify who your inner enemy is though? Does that just mean like pay attention to your thoughts and identify what negative thoughts you're having?
The greatest tool you'll ever have and the greatest friend you'll ever have is called reflection. So the best friend on the planet that you'll ever have is a process or a Friend called reflection, A pen and a pad, asking very specific questions and listening to the very specific answers. If you'll be surprised if you'll just sit down with yourself with a pen and a pad and say, alright, enemy, where are you and who are you? And then literally sit there in silence for 60 seconds, 90 seconds, your brain will begin to tell you what those things are.
Okay.
Okay. Trust me on this. Right. All right. The next thing is what your inner hero look like. So when you look into the. When you look into yourself, it's the person you want to be.
Ooh, yeah, I like that.
Okay, your inner hero is the person you want to be. Is it someone of influence? Is it someone of business? Is it someone of great parenting skills? Like, clearly define who it is you want to be. Again, we try to use all five senses. It's the easiest way to articulate a vision. Okay, next one. What can you use? What kind of steps can you use to get there? Okay, you may not be able to articulate that one right away, but it's a question to ask. Okay. What needs to be removed? In other words, what did you learn as part of this digging into yourself?
I guess what I'm confused about here is, are we digging into your present self or is this. This is all about your past. Right.
You've got to understand your present self is a result of your past self.
Okay.
Right. So if you want to change where your present and your future are heading, then you've got to focus on doing the work to understand what you. What you want to take with you on your new journey and what you want to let go of.
So once you've watched the episode 004 of the Whiteboard lesson, you've gotten the idea of the six things. Your influences, your environments, experiences, values, beliefs, choices, results. And you've dove into those. The next step, step two is just to answer these questions and kind of. They're about where you are right now. Okay. I just wanted to clarify.
Yeah. So what needs like. So for. Like, these are just questions that I've used.
Okay.
You can use different questions if you want. I mean, these aren't the only questions you can use, but the, the principle is to sit down with a paper and a pen and look at how you got to where you are today, using the influences you've received, the environments you grew up in, the experiences you had, the belief system and values that you currently highly value. Right. One of the things that I had to trash was unfortunately watching my. My parents having an altercation. Okay. That Was not gonna serve me. What. What it had done is it was causing me to expect altercations to happen on a regular basis.
In your own relationships or.
Just in my own relationships. And that's where the defensiveness came from. You see what I'm saying?
So your parents would have some kind of conflict?
Well, I was six years old, and they had an altercation, Quasi, physical. No one like, no one. I didn't see any abuse or anything like that, but it was physical enough to scare me. Right, Right. Well, not realizing it, it marked and marked me in my influences. Right. It caused me to believe that parenting was a specific way, or raising children was a specific way, or dealing with conflict was a specific way. Right. So identified with that. I adopted it because I adopted it. After I identified it, I got myself.
And then you had some conflicts, and then I would.
And I would be like, right, yeah, right. Well, none of that's healthy. It's not serving me. I needed to trash it. Okay, so that's one example of something I trashed.
So taking the things from your past and from your origin story that you might not be so fond of, and the things that don't move you forward and essentially saying, this has no value. I don't need to live my life in this way, so I'm gonna throw that belief away. Precisely. Cool.
All right, the next one is what lies have you believed? What lies have you believed? So in other words, everyone that has self worth issues, everyone has insecurities, which we pretty much all do. Has those insecurities or has those self worth issues solely become. Because there are lies that they have believed. Either they're lies that they've told about.
Themselves or lies they've been told.
Exactly. That they've chosen to believe. So a lot of people.
Yeah. Yes, I have. I just. It just clicked. I was like, how many of those am I believing?
Exactly. But if you don't do this project, like, so you're what, 20, 24 now? 23. 23. 23 years old. Young. Right. I didn't begin asking myself these questions until I was in my 30s.
Whew. I'm ahead.
All right.
You can get started earlier. Right. And if you can't get started earlier, the best time to start is today. Right, Right. Imagine if you could just sit down with a pen and a pad and all of a sudden could identify lies that you know. Right. That you know that have shaped you. And you're like, why did I believe that?
So. So another example of that might be, like, if you were told Growing up, let's say you were bounce off the walls, ADHD or something like that, and you were told you're a spaz.
Yeah.
Or you're annoying or you're too much. You might go into social interactions in the future, basically operating as if you either have to walk eggshells, it becomes your truth, or you're super insecure. And you know, I. I know that one from experience because I have a lot of energy.
Well, that's ex.
Yeah, that's exactly what I was always told. I was annoying and too much. So.
Well, and if you think about that today. So you and I are close, Right. So you and I spend a lot of time together. Yeah. And I have actually seen you get emotional, meaning physically emotional when someone says something like that. Right?
Yeah.
It's because you. One. It's one. It's a lie. It's not true.
Well, it's like, I've heard that so much, you know, like. Like I am coming from a place of this. I have goals, I have dreams, I have things that I want to do in my life. I. I just look at myself as a normal guy who has those goals and dreams and ambitions and is very energetic and excited to get there. That's all I've ever looked at myself as. And I'm a very loving guy. I'm a very.
I want to love people. That's the next piece of this reflection piece.
But I always had people come to me and say they didn't like me for some reason, whether it was I was too much or.
What's the thing, though? Some people will look at someone who's not as energetic and has a lot of pace and say they have no passion. That person may have passion. It's shown and illustrated a different way.
Right?
Right. God did not create us to be all the same person. We would be robots. We'd be running around doing stuff, Right?
Yeah.
We're all part of the same body doing the same thing. Like, I might be a heart of the body, you might be the head of the body. Right. You see what I'm saying? There's. Every single person on this planet is built to do specific things that will actually add value when they're operating in those. But as long as you're believing the lies, you'll be focused on the lies, which means you're not focused on the truth. Only the truth will set you free, and only the truth will create progress. Okay, so when you. When you mentioned that whole lie, that lie about being a spaz and all this kind of stuff or being, you know, or not. It's not. It's not that people are annoyed by you. It's just that that's not their modality of movement and of processing and whatnot. So what happens is, is you have to position yourselves in a group of people where you are the energetic source of another group of people that maybe don't have that same gift. So in other words, it's not a curse, it's a gift if I.
If I learn how to use it properly.
If you learn how to use it properly. Right. So I also have a ton of energy. Right. My nickname.
I'm pretty sure you've been through the exact same time.
Absolutely. You are. You are a younger version of me, which is one of the reasons why I love hanging out with you so much. My nickname when I was a kid was Steamboat. My mom would say I only. Yeah, exactly. I only had. I only had two settings. Off and on.
Yes, me too.
Okay. So I didn't have a. I didn't really have a slowdown phase. I didn't. I was either on or off. You've talked about my work ethic and how it's ridiculous and da, da, da, da. Okay. God built me this way. He built me to move. Move the needle. He built me to push. He built me to create. He built me to strategize. Right. He didn't build me to edit my own documents. Right. Because those skill sets are very, very different things. So imagine this. If you grew up thinking. If I grew up thinking that I was meant to edit things rather than create things, how frustrated do you think I would be?
Very.
Exactly.
Because you'd be struggling a lot with it.
Most people are frustrated in their life because they're not focusing their sniper rifle at the right thing. Right. Most people are trying to be something they're not. They're trying to be something someone else told them they were supposed to be.
So that's why it's so important to reflect and get your answer from within and decide, what do you want? What are your strengths and weaknesses? And then you can decide. All right, here's where I actually should be going now. I have this self awareness. I know what BS stories I've been telling myself. That's holding myself back, which is the lies.
Yeah.
And then what is this last one? What truth needs to be a part of your daily routine?
Well, and we've. Ironically, we've been talking about that this entire time, remember? So once you identify the lie, then you can apply the truth.
Okay.
You can't you can't apply a truth to a lie.
Is that like a challenge thought?
It's a lot like the challenge thought.
Okay.
It's a lot like that. So you actually just mentioned it, Right? So you said, hey, look, I grew up. People were telling me I was annoying because I had so much energy. They couldn't keep up with me. Da, da da, da, da, da. And since you've been hanging out with me, I've been telling you, I mean.
I did act a little weird as a kid because I tried to impress people too much. So I would say that.
But that came again. This is where the influence of the environment that came from not being accepted early on because you were misunderstood.
Right. But I guess I'm just saying if I could.
You hadn't found your tribe yet.
If I could go back again, knowing what I know now, I think I'd actually do better with those same people. I think I've learned how to kind of dial it back a little bit.
Exactly.
But still not the best.
But what we're. What we're sharing today is not taught in schools, which is why it takes so long for people to learn it, which is why so many people feel stuck, frustrated and overwhelmed in their daily life on a regular basis. Because this is not taught. We're going to teach it, we're going to help you apply it, and we're going to show you how to leverage it for your future so you can go from being stuck to unstoppable.
That's awesome.
It seems simple. All right, step number three, and I'm gonna go ahead and fast forward because we only have literally five minutes left. Alright. Is to decide how much of your story you want to keep and how much of your story you want to rewrite.
If you think about movie screenplays, and we talk a little bit, in fact, we actually have an entire process that will be in Transform youm Online when we release it later in the fall, where we actually help you identify your traditional life, your traditional script and your transformational script. Like, we'll actually help you write your new script.
So you have your script. So can you elaborate on that for someone who doesn't know what that is?
Yeah, for sure. So we've been talking about this entire process of your origin story. Okay. The reason origin stories are so powerful in movies is because it sets the tone for the entire trilogies, the entire script. It sets every story Right. So you're in an origin story. There are strengths and weaknesses, all of which are undiscovered. All of which you have a mentor's help. Mr. Miyagi helps Danielson. Qui Gon Jin. Right.
Iron man is cocky and arrogant, flies to this foreign country. Then he gets Paltrow, realizes that he has to build something in a cave to get out of there.
Exactly. Which is a humbling. Which we all have to say.
Correct.
So all of these parts and pieces are elements of a story. Right. The very same things that you tell yourself on a regular basis that caused you to react in specific ways or different ways would be referred to as your current script. It's your current narrative. You were living out a script that you believe in.
You say it's accurate that the type of person who is living their life, they feel like it's Groundhog Day. They keep getting the same results that they're not happy with every single day, and they feel like their life is going by on autopilot. They feel like they're living a scripted life that they can't control. I have felt like that before.
The very fact that you ex. You're experiencing a Groundhog Day experience tells you you are living a script.
Yeah, that's. That sounds. Sounds good.
You want to change your life, you got to change your script. We probably should put that on a social.
Yeah, that was really good.
Right? If you want to change your life, you got to change your script.
So if you're living days on repeat, you're seeing same week, same month over and over again. Money's running out before the end of the month. You're like, what's going on? You're living by a script.
Exactly. So step one of discovering your own origin process and step two are all about understanding the script you're living. Okay. Okay. Once you understand the script you're living, the next step of the process is to decide how much of that script you actually enjoy. There are things about myself and how I grew up. So how I grew up shaped me. Right. There's things that I love about that.
Right.
There are other things. I was complete garbage, and I had to take the trash out.
So for me, like, for example, I could maybe value some of the early successes I have. And look at those as. Those are positive things. Right. The early success I did have as an entrepreneur at 16, that's something that I could use to say, maybe I can do this.
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you have evidence to prove that you can be successful building a business.
So look at the positives in your.
Life and keep rather than, Well, I built one business, and then I tried to build three more behind it and they all failed. I will tell you which is honest story. So I have. I have six companies to date. Okay. Six successful companies of varying levels of success from a monetary standpoint, team member standpoint, culture standpoint, community standpoint. What you and I have not talked a lot about is the other 14 companies that didn't make it.
Really?
Yeah. Because I'm an entrepreneur. I see risk, I see opportunity, and I want to weigh it and I want to go after it. Right, Right. So when you identify the script you're living, now it's time to decide again. Step three is identify the script you're living and decide what you want to keep and what you want to trash.
Got it? Okay.
It's that simple. Again, notepad and pen. This entire process doesn't even take a PDF document or some kind of video series. It's a notepad and pen asking questions. Okay. Because the brain will give you the. Will give you answers to the questions that you ask.
You don't need a fifteen hundred dollar course to answer the question. We have those, but. Or maybe we will. Probably not that expensive.
No, I'm keep. I'm keep it far below that. But yeah, I mean, the idea here is to make sure that you're taking the time to fully understand your own origin story. The whole podcast is about taking the time to understand your own origin story, because your origin story has shaped who you are today. And if you want to be something different, you've got to understand the story so you can rewrite the narrative.
That makes perfect sense to me.
Okay.
Okay.
All right. Step four, like everything else is take action, right? Don't do all this research, don't do all this stuff and then look at yourself and get lost in like. Well, I would, you know, I've. I made this mistake, so I guess I'll never. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. You're not understanding. Do the research to uncover what needs to be done. Okay. What needs to be changed, what needs to be taken out the trash, what needs to be kept, what needs to be amplified. Right? So. And I like to think of it with using these three questions, okay? So once you've done your research, use these three questions to articulate what your new screenplay could look like, what your new narrative, your script can look like, okay. What we like to refer to as a transformational life script. Okay? And that is, who do you want to be? Who do you want to be at the end of the day? Who do you want to be? What are the character traits of the Person you want to be, what is that person doing from a professional standpoint? What are you doing? Okay, next one is where do you want to go? Right. Who you want to be and where you want to go are two totally different things. Right. Who you want to be has. From a significance, from an identity, from a self worth, from a security standpoint. Who do you want to be? Where do you want to go is what do you want to do with your life? Where do you.
So who do you want to be is almost more of a character thing. Like, it's more of a type of man or woman. Do I want to become exactly. What type of father? What type that's in the role. Exactly. Type of father. Mother.
Roles.
Response leaders.
Character. Yes.
Business owner, football player, whatever. What. What type of person do I want to be? And then what do I want to accomplish? Or I guess where I. Yeah, where.
Do you want to go is more about accomplishments. It's more about aspirations. Right, got it. So.
And the third one is, what do you want to be known for? So when it's all said and done, you've passed away. Right.
This is the funeral conversation.
This is the funeral conversation. And I'm trying to be morbid, but what do you want to be known for as a man, As a man who lied, cheated and stole, or as a man who gave, gave, gave and became something awesome?
I've heard a lot of people in the personal development space talk about that funeral thing where they're like, because who do I want to be remembered as? Right.
And if you don't decide those things now, then what's going to happen is, is you're going to stay on that stupid hamster.
Well, and that's. That could be a big influencer for people is, you know, asking yourself this question. If your life ended today.
Yeah.
And the funeral was this weekend or whenever, and you're. What is your family and friends, first of all, how many are going to show up and what are they actually going to say about you? What are they. What are they going to have to say? That's a tough question for some people to answer. Other people, it's like, hey, I'm good. But, you know, that's. It really puts in perspective, like, crap. If it ended today, it might. Might get some urgency for, you know, for sure what you want to do for sure.
Hey, look, three quick examples. So who I wanted to be was. I wanted to be a man who was seen as an educator, a mentor and a teacher. All right, Check. Right. I wanted to make sure that I had that. That was who I wanted to be. Where I wanted to go was I wanted to create a process and a lot of businesses, a lot of different things, things that would help the teams that work there, but also more importantly, that would change and transform a million lives. Because my life is transformed. Okay. What I want to be known for is a man who created possibilities for others.
Those are my three. And if I do those three things well, then I'll always feel like my purpose is clear. Does that make sense? Steve Myrick, the guy we've talked about several times, your mentor. My first primary mentor. All right. And you're still far away from your microphone, so I can hear where you say that. All right. My very first mentor, Steve Myrick. Most people will never know who he is, right? Except for people that follow us, of course. But you know, he wasn't well known. He wasn't considered an influence in the marketplace, but he transformed my life.
He passed away in 2003 and I'm a living embodiment of his legacy. Right. We've already transformed thousands of lives with the stuff that we've already done. Okay. We've already helped lots of people get some breakthrough, get some things going from our live events that transform you and some of the other things that we've done in the past. Okay. My hope is that I can take the investment in the seed he sowed in me and give him a thousand fold crop.
Wow.
Okay. He never, he never saw what's going. What's been going on for like literally the last what, 15, 16 years? Almost 20. Right. He's never seen it. Three years. That's removed from never knew it. Never saw the building, never saw how big the companies became, never saw any of that. The greatest way I can honor him is to continue to make him immortal by teaching people the same principles or some of the principles he taught me.
Yeah.
So if you want your life to make an impact, be somebody worthy of making the impact.
Yeah, man. I hope I can make you immortal one day. I don't really want to think about that, but.
