Keep Your Eye On The Ball

Stephen Scoggins breaks down three mental habits that hold you back or push you forward: dwelling on the past, comparing yourself to others, and honest self-reflection. He uses a martial arts principle that the head controls the body, and argues that self-talk and reflection are how you actually change.
Alright, we've already talked about this before, so if you haven't checked out the other videos, make sure you do Called the Journey Principles Big three. The first one of those is understanding what drives you, which is ultimately all about your self awareness. What I discovered is, is your self awareness might be holding you back. So stay tuned to figure out how to improve it.
I learned a long time ago when I was studying martial arts that the head actually controls the body. The reality is the head controls the body in life, business and career pursuits as well. Which is one of the reasons why I think we struggle so much to actually get lasting breakthrough or take our lives to the next level. Now if you understand that the head controls the body, then you'll also appreciate this quote by Warren Wiersbe. You do not move ahead constantly looking in the rearview mirror. Instead you move ahead by taking advantage of everything in front of you. So here's the important thing. You've got to learn from the past, but you can't live in the past. And that really got me thinking. And there are three specific lenses or three specific mirrors that I find that actually hold us back and or propel us forward. The first one is the rear view mirror. I learned a long time ago that you cannot drive a car correctly if you're constantly looking in the rear view mirror. Now it's okay to check your blind spots. It's okay to make sure you can see what's coming to your left and to your right and look around for things that, well, that may catch you off guard. But you don't want to focus there. Why? Because if you focus there, that car will eventually end up off a cliff. Right? That's not what we want to do. So the first mirror we've got to pay attention to or avoid paying attention to too much is the rearview mirror of our life. Now the second mirror that we have to pay attention to is the mirror of comparison. Far too many people are comparing their own abilities, their own selves and their own things to the people around them. Rather than what they do well, rather than what they do really strong. Rather than the God given gifts that they possess in themselves, which leaves them vulnerable, if you will, to doing things wrong that they weren't actually equipped to do themselves to begin with. Which is why the mirror of comparison can be so difficult. How many people have you known that have actually gotten wounded or hurt by somebody else's Facebook post because somebody else has the girlfriend or the boyfriend or the house or the car or something that maybe you don't have right now. Right? Those are specific areas that you don't want to do. As long as you're living your life by the spirit, if you will, of comparison, you're not actually seeing yourself and the benefits that you bring to the world, the value that you bring, your strengths, your gifts. So you want to make sure that you're not focusing hardcore in the mirror of comparison. All right? Now, the one place that I think is very important in watching a mirror, if you will, is the mirror on the wall. What I mean by that is an early point in my breakthrough of me trying to transform my own life from going from homelessness to where I'm at today was actually telling myself that I was worthy of the benefits or the blessings that would one day later come in life. And I had to physically look myself eyeball to eyeball in the mirror and tell myself that I mattered. I had to honestly ask myself where I needed to grow, what strengths I had. Okay? There's something powerful about reassuring and empowering your own self with your own words, with your own eyes. So make sure you take the time to use the mirror on the wall not to condemn yourself, not to judge yourself, but to empower yourself and. And amplify yourself. Right? Tell yourself on a regular basis things that you are really good at. Focus there. Make sure you use the mirror on the wall not as an adversary, but instead as an ally. Because once you do, you're going to take your life to the whole another level. All right, so that's it for today's video. Make sure you check out the rest of the videos here on this channel, especially on self awareness, and you'll hope to get right through soon. Take care.
