Learning to Let Go

Stephen Scoggins uses the metaphor of holding an unpinned grenade to show why clinging to past hurts damages you. He offers a concrete exercise: write down the offense, choose to forgive, then bury or burn the paper.

Hi, I'm Steven Scoggins and I welcome you back to the Journey. Principles. As always, we have two simple goals. We hope to encourage your mind and motivate your heart. Today I want to talk about letting go. What person can hold an unpinned grenade without it exploding in their very hand? You see, every awakening will require a reckoning of our past and leads us to our future purpose. Not letting go of our past failures prevents our future growth. What grenades are you still holding onto? Will the personal injury cause another person to explode? Of course not. Holding on to the grenade will only injure us in the future. Give faith a fighting chance. Practice letting go of things beyond our control. I know this is a hard one at first, but it will be worth it in the end. And I have to promise you, it gets easier with practice. A practical step is to actually write down the offense on a piece of paper. Also write down how you choose to let it go and offer forgiveness to another person. Then bury or burn it and never be thought of again. You will be amazed at how much time and how much heartache and how much mental stress this frees up. You can then focus on things that you want to help and want to grow from and experience helping others. We don't have to worry about tomorrow if we can find peace today. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be enough to worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Letting the grenade go helps us to manage our personal stress and find a healthy balance in life. The prayer of Serenity says it all. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change and the courage to change the things that I can. And then the wisdom that comes from that will be all the difference. I'm Stephen Scoggins. Encourage you to heal, grow and go. And we want to see you again on the next journey. Principles.
