The #1 Reason Why People Stay "Stuck" | Journey Principles Podcast 005

A podcast episode (Journey Principles) where hosts Stephen Scoggins and Connor Kraft introduce the four-step GROW Process for escaping stagnation: Gain perspective; Recognize and remove roadblocks; Organize a plan; Work the plan. They argue the primary reason people stay stuck is not knowing the next step to take, and illustrate how perspective, identifying roadblocks (e.g., unhealthy comparisons), and a repeatable process enable consistent progress.

Welcome to the Journey Principles, where we show you how to go from stuck to unstoppable with life strategies that work. Now here's your host and creator of the Transform youm Framework, Stephen Scoggins.
Hey, guys. Welcome back to the Journey Principles. So happy to have you guys here. Coming to you live from the City of Oaks, right here with my buddy, Connor Kraft, director of connection with the Journey Principles Institute. We have a great show for you today. We're going to cover a framework that I've been teaching Connor and several people for the last several years that has proven results to help you get kind of unstuck. We're also going to answer a very, very important question that you have probably had at least one time in your life, if not more times in your life. And I actually want to have Connor hit that up real fast. Connor, curious, what is this amazing question everybody's trying to get answered?
The question is, what is the number one reason, the biggest thing why people stay stuck?
Okay, do you want me to answer that or you want to give your $0.02 first? What do you want to do?
I don't know. I'll take a guess.
I think that you should know by now.
I think that being stuck is a result of not making progress. I mean, that just seems like the inverse of being stuck is making progress. But why people don't make progress like that to me sounds like a huge crazy question.
So here's what I've discovered. One of the reasons that people don't make progress or they stay stuck, the number one reason that I see is they don't know what step to take. And people who are in fear or they live, there's a sense of overwhelm. There's a sense of.
Inconsistency in beliefs, right? If they refuse to. If they don't know what step to take, they often don't take a step at all.
So do you mean like, they have no idea what step to take, or do you mean, like. Because I'm thinking that there's some people out there who are like, well, I know what my. I know my. If I'm overweight, I know my next step is to go to the gym.
Okay, why aren't you doing it?
Why are you doing it? I don't know. I'm just lazy or because I'm No.
So. And that's what I want to get at. So if motive, like in this particular example that you just threw out there, if motivation is the problem, then there's a reason why the steps not being taken and the idea is to discover why that step's not being taken. Because that step is your domino. It's not starting your domino effect of everything kind of falling behind it. Which is precisely why we're gonna do the overview today.
Right.
If the number one reason that people don't take action or they stay stuck is because they don't know what step to take, therefore they don't take any at all. Right. Then the easiest way to do that is to have one simple thing in place. And that's a proven process to make it safe, to take steps and to make mistakes.
Oh, I'm excited for this because I know where we're going with this.
Yeah, buddy.
We're Teach Grow.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, man.
I love it.
Somebody loves Grow. I do.
So Grow Grow is actually going to do a deep dive on Grow in our next podcast, which is coming this Thursday.
But basically that'll probably be like an hour long podcast because we, we literally have to teach this.
Well, I want to make sure. Yeah, I want to make sure that we break it down and bite sized things where people understand it.
So you're actually, you're actually saying that, that the number one reason why people stay stuck is because they don't have the information of what they need to do next. And the solution for that is this process.
You got to think fear is overcome with information a lot of times. So if there's a reason that you have trepidation about taking a step, or you don't feel like taking a step, or there's a motivation issue, or there's something missing that's preventing you from taking that step. Like I mentioned before, if you can't take that step, you're not going to take anyone's after it. Another problem that I like to see that keeps people stuck, that's kind of rolled up into that is they try to get to the end before they've actually taken the beginning step.
Oh yeah, I tried to do that a lot.
Yeah. So I know that's one of the reasons why I kind of want to bring that up. So our four part process is actually really simple. When we go to explain it now, when we go to break it down, you'll see how intuitive it has to be and how organized it is and why it works on a highlight. The process is called the Grow Process. It's an acronym that we stumbled across by watching. What I did about 20 years ago is I began watching people that were around me before influencers were a thing, and I began to see what made Those people successful. Steve Myrick, my very first mentor that you guys will hear about all the time because he had such a magnificent impact on my life. Told me, told me, asked me one question and changed everything. He said, what's the difference between a rich man and a poor man? I said, well, duh, money. He's like, absolutely not. It's the way they think.
Yeah, right.
So what he just gave me, in that moment in time that I'd never been, I'd never stumbled on before, is something called perspective. That was a perspective shift. A perspective shift is when you change the way you look at something because when you change the way you look at something, the things you look at change. Dr. Wayne Dyer.
Yep.
Okay. So that's why perspective is so powerful. Okay. So the first step is gain perspective. The second step is remove recognize and remove roadblocks. The third step is organize a plan. And the W, if you will. Or the fourth step is work a plan. Right. So that's, that's the grow process in a, in a, in a, like a nutshell. Okay.
Basically, at a high level. At a high level, you want to.
Accomplish anything in your life, doesn't matter what it is.
Gain perspective first, then recognize and remove the roadblocks that are in your way. Then organize a plan and then work your plan. If you follow those four steps in that order.
Mm.
Can you, can you do them?
If you go them out of order, you are setting yourself up to fall off a cliff.
Yeah, I learned that from experience.
And you're, I mean, you're seriously. But, but it's a good teaching lesson. It teaches you what to do and what to focus on and that kind of stuff. So that's the important part. Think about it like this, alright? So people invest in the stock market all the time. How many of them just go and go willy nilly and invest in a bunch of stocks and have nothing, know nothing about the stock, little to none of them.
Right?
Because when you're playing in the stock market, there's big quantity, there's big consequences to getting it wrong. Big consequences. Getting stock market wrong. Okay. That's exactly why the grow process works, is because it kind of, at a high level, it make. It forces you to go out and get information that you're probably not putting your hands on right now. Whether it be an outside resource, like a mentor, whether it be a book, a podcast, a video, some other tool that you can use today to make sure that you've actually kind of got that coming in. Right? So what I want to do from you is I want to hear, just at a very high level, what is the grow process done for you? What was life before grow? What was life after grow?
Yeah, for sure. So before the growth process, I didn't really know where to start. So I had, you know, hundreds of things that I wanted to accomplish. I always started with my outcomes. I've never had a problem with that personally. So I've always been a dreamer. I've always had dozens of things on my head of, you know, what I wanted to do. So whether it be get in the best shape of my life or whether it be build a million dollar business, become an entrepreneur, I have a lot of talk targets at any given time. And I used to spend all my time just focusing on those targets. And my thought process was, okay, cool, I have these targets. Now I just need to figure out how to get there. And I really spent all of my time worrying about how, how do I get there? How am I going to get there? How am I going to get there? But that's actually the wrong way to do it. This is why I stayed stuck for so long. I literally.
So what did I. What did I teach you to do different?
You taught me the grow process, and I just literally, so what?
Think about what the primary grow process.
And actually gain perspective first and ask. You need to take an.
It's asking a different question.
Yeah. So instead of just how do I get there? Which is, by the way, like step three, that's organizing a plan.
You'll get there. I promise.
You will get step. But I think most people, they don't take the time to identify the things that are holding them back, which is r. But then they also don't take enough time to clearly define not only where you want to go, which is. I had no problem spending all my time in that area of giving. I spent plenty of time dreaming. My issue was there are other elements of gaining perspective which we'll dive into on the next podcast really, really deeply. But there's a list of questions you need to ask.
Yeah.
And one of them is, where do you want to go? But another one is, where am I today? And how did I get here?
That's right.
I didn't want to spend any time.
No, you didn't.
I was like, I don't care about where I am today. I care about where I want to go. I. And so I neglected all those other things.
Yeah.
Which meant that the same mistakes and the things that I was doing wrong that had gotten me to where I was were Bound and destined to keep keeping me stuck. Because if you can't. If you can't change or first of all, identify and sit in your current circumstances and say, okay, here's where I am that I don't like. How did I get here? Yeah, you're not gonna realize that there's 10 or 15 things or however many things that got you here. You need to stop and do differently if you want. Different circumstances. I skipped that. I just thought that, okay, well, obviously, I just need to figure out how to go to where I want to go. And I spent all my time thinking.
Yeah.
Spent all my time spinning my wheel.
Which is a roadblock.
Which is a roadblock. And I was like, why am I not getting there? And I tried to, you know, bulldoze through my problems, like, basically smash my head through a brick wall, rather than you try to tell me, hey, patience. And I was like, patience, I need to go there faster. Like, you have no idea.
You're 20 something and you got to be a millionaire tomorrow.
Yeah, yeah, basically. So I was impatient. I wanted to know what I needed to do, and then I wanted to do it. That was how simple it was. But I neglected these other steps. So I would say that the biggest thing that helped me get unstuck, which is a term I really identified with for a long time, because I really just felt stuck. I had somewhere I wanted to be. You ever know that feeling of, you know, it's New Year's Eve and you're making your resolutions. Maybe you don't make it on New Year's Eve, but year after year, you make the same resolutions of, this is what I want to change. And then a year goes by and you're making the same one.
Yeah.
You know that feeling of that. I experienced that a few years ago.
Groundhog Day.
Yeah, exactly. I experienced that a few years in a row. And I was really getting really fed up with it because I wanted these things that for my life so badly. And it was one. The first year, it was like, oh, okay. Oh, well, that year was a learning year. That's fine. All right. This year, I'm really gonna do this. Another year would go by, New Year's Eve. I'm like, crap.
I didn't.
And I'm like, okay, I guess I have this. Come on, you got this. Year three again, same spot. And I was like, what the heck is going on? Year four, same spot.
Which is about the time I got to meet him.
And that is. Yes. And that is the most frustrating. I actually started to get like depressed thoughts or suicidal thoughts. Because when you spend that long not making progress in your life and going to where you want to be, you start to feel like you have a self worth issue. Like, am I worth this result? Am I not good enough to actually do the work? I thought I was lazy. I told myself all kinds of stories.
Yeah, you were a mess when I first met.
Why? I wasn't.
I know.
Thanks. I really wasn't.
Dude, you're awesome.
You're right.
But even I can recognize potential that's untapped.
Absolutely, man. I'm glad you did. I just. You've been a blessing.
And you've been a blessing to me for sure.
I'm so grateful.
Appreciate you big time.
This guy is one of the hardest working people I've ever met. As far as hungry, this dude is hungry, hungry, hungry.
I appreciate that. I definitely, I just, I have a lot of that I want to do.
Right. So gaining perspective, right, is all about just looking at your situation, your relationship, whatever, whatever your focus is, take the focus and look at that focus item from as many different angles as you possibly can. From internal, from external, from friends, from relationships, from mentors, from co workers. Help find people that you know like and trust and ask them, hey, look, do you see this differently? That's an easy way to go ahead and get perspective. Okay, we'll go into a crazy deep dive in the next podcast for sure. Yeah, it's gonna be awesome. Now the next step is called Recognize roadblocks. And one of the roadblocks I want to touch on just really fast is one that I see a lot of our audience make. Alright. When we start asking questions and stuff like that, it never fails. They're like, hey, I want to see what happened at that next level. So when you look at recognizing roadblocks, one of the core roadblocks that I've, that I get from the community all the time, that I've seen through comments, that I've seen through social media, that I've seen you struggle with, that I used to struggle with in a big, big way, is comparing your results to someone else's. Wow, Okay.
I even feel like I'm underestimating that right now as I hear it. You say it.
That'S a big thing. And I know that that affects people. Maybe I'm still learning that.
I'm sure I am.
That's probably why I can't see it. But I heard you say that and I was like, really? Can you elaborate on that very, very briefly? Because I know we don't have.
Yeah. So essentially, for the sake of time, when you go to compare yourself with somebody else, one you were using your start to contrast it with their middle, their end. Okay.
So someone else way further along.
Perfect example. Alright, so I've got somebody in whom I admire and respect that's an influencer. His name is Dave Ramsey. Right. I've had the fortunate pleasure of getting to know Dave and Sharon and his team, a lot of his team, not all this team, because this team's huge now. Right. And when I first started on this journey of becoming an author and a speaker and a business coach, all that. When I first instinctively I wanted to build, because I admired him so much, I instinctively wanted to build what he had built, but I wanted to do it in like two years after he spent 20 years building it.
I see, Right.
And one of the things that he's always told me is there's absolutely no way to rush the process. The process is the process and if you get it quick, you'll lose it quick. Okay.
So you trying to be like, okay, I'm looking at what Dave has built 20 years and that's my end. But you haven't put in the 20 years.
Not yet. I'm in the process of doing my.
20 years compared to today's result in what you're able to do today with what he's able to do today, even though he's actually now.
But you go back and look at his start. Our starts were both very humble. He sold books out of the back of his car. He started Ramsey what is now known as Ramsey Solution, Ramsey Solutions off a car table in his living room. I started sleeping in a car. Right. It takes time.
So don't compare yourself.
Don't compare yourself. If you compare yourself to people on a regular basis who are just further along in their process than you are. Right. Then you are going to discourage yourself from taking the needed steps. And that was something I actually used to watch you do as well. That's true. That's true.
I knew that I did it. I knew that that was an issue for me. I just wasn't sure.
Yeah.
Why it was such a big thing. But it makes sense. And it makes sense as it would be one of the biggest things that discourages you from taking action. In which case it is a huge thing. Because the whole point of today's podcast is what keeps you stuck.
That's right.
If you're not taking action, you're gonna be stuck.
So now we're gonna do a deep dive and we Gotta wrap it up here in just a second. But the next step is organize a plan. In the next podcast, I'm going to spend time, I'm going to break down what I use currently to organize my plan so you can actually build a plan that you can trust and rely on. If that doesn't make sense, I've got a whole team of people here that are happy to help you understand what to do, when to do it, and what to do next. And then the W is going to be work your plan. It's going to be the doing the push ups phase of the grow process. Okay? Now, if you'll follow the grow process and put in the effort, I promise you it will deliver reliable results based on the effort that you put in.
So can you. If you. If somebody goes through the grow process and follows each step step by step and really takes their time and really does it right, do you think that by definition they can even stay stuck?
No, they can't. Wow. That's why we say we take people from stuck to unstoppable, because that's actually what we do now. We don't do it necessarily in an instant. There's no appeal that fixes it. You know what I'm saying? But you trust the process, the process will perform. I have yet to see the grow process fail.
Neither have I. I've only seen the hordes of people who are like, dude, this thing's awesome. Yeah, this works.
And it's, it's super simple and it can be applied to anything. And that's what we like to do here. So, guys, we're about out of time. Make sure you check out the next podcast. It's going to be a deep dive into the grow process and we're going to help you get unstuck with that. We're going to show you what to do and how to use it.
