The SHOCKING HABITS Of All Successful People

This is a YouTube interview (Stephen Scoggins with Connor Kraft) about habits and mindsets of successful people. Scoggins identifies three central practices: (1) dare to dream and imagine a future (illustrated by signing a symbolic $100,000 check), (2) create and execute a plan (work backwards from the end, example: Journey Principles Institute events and online school), and (3) sustain focused, daily action (eliminate distractions). He emphasizes time as the primary sacrifice/investment for success, shares a personal regret about two years lost while chasing career goals during his wife's illness, and cites a Tom Harris Poll that ~70% of people remain stuck. The transcript is conversational and advice-focused, mixing high-level principles with practical examples and program mentions (Transfer Me Live, TransferMe Online).

So the number one question I think people need to ask themselves is, what could be. What could be my end result if I dare to try?
Hey, what's going on, guys? This is Connor Kraft, and I'm joined by Steven Scoggins, and today he's going to be answering your questions about successful people and their habits. And first question that we got was, what are some of the strange habits? I know I didn't write the question, but what are some of the strange habits of successful people?
Strange habits. Well, thank God they're not all serial killers. That's good, right? I don't know about strange habits.
I guess, technically, any habit of a successful person is going to be strange.
Well, you know what? That's a brilliant point. I think people that don't live in a world where they're used to trying to achieve and overcome things and make progress on a consistent basis might actually see things as being a bit strange. I do have, you know, come to think of it, I've got family members and friends that simply don't understand me per se. They don't understand what drives and motivates me to become successful. I think it comes down to really two things. Successful people. Actually, no, I think it's three things. I'm giving you a bonus. One, I think the first thing that successful people do that others don't is they're not afraid to dream. They're not afraid to imagine a future that they don't yet have. They're not afraid to imagine relationships they don't yet have. They're not afraid to do what I did a long time ago and write $100,000 check that you sign that you hang on your refrigerator, not knowing when you're going to cash that. Joker, right? Each of those things is almost like a step of faith kind of deal. I find that people who are struggling to become successful many times are more focused on where they are right now and the pain that they feel right now or the displeasure that they feel right now, or the. The feelings of frustration. And like junk, they're more focused on that rather than going, what could be? So the number one question I think people need to ask themselves is, what could be? What could be my end result if I dared to try? You know, I did this quote. It was several years ago. I was being interviewed by a local TV station, and they asked. They said, what do you think drives people to make that change? And I've said this before, and it's because I think people are where they are today, because that's all they've allowed themselves to be. And I say that because people take their life as it sits right now and they're like, this is all I have. This is all it's going to be. Right. My family tried to convince me that working for $12 an hour and buying my own single y trailer, that was going to be the epitome of success.
And I almost believed it. I almost fell for the trap. And I think a lot of people fall for that trap because life experiences get in the way. We get humbled along the way. We have, you know, have a bad relationship or two along the way. We don't manage our money really well along the way. And then we refuse to do the work to get ourselves out of those areas, which is actually where you get growth. Which means they finally give up on dreaming and actually imagining where they could be. The second thing that I see that highly successful people do, that people who are struggling to make progress don't do, is creating and executing a plan. Right?
Yeah.
I know that you've said several times that, hey, look, I've had the chance to watch you work and I see things in you that I want to either become or do myself. How do you do it? Where does it come from? How do you make these decisions before you have to make the decision?
Yeah, because you just show up and it's like you already know exactly what you need to do and you just have this laser focus and I've never seen anything like it, but I see it and I'm like, that's why he's successful.
Well, it's because I allow myself to dream. I have an idea of where I'm even taking this particular company. Like the Journey Principles Institute, which is our personal development company. Right. Life, Inspiration, Brand. I know where I want this company to be. I know what it looks. In fact, I'll tell you, to be honest with you, I'll just be candid and transparent with you guys. You guys get a little bonus tip here. My greatest struggle right now in everything that I do is I can always see five years ahead. I have a hard time seeing five minutes ahead. Right. So I'm always chasing the five hour mark. What has to be done in the next 5 hours? What has to be done in the next 5 hours? What has to be done in the next 5 hours, and as a result, I'm always working with the end in mind and working backwards, which is nothing more than a plan. Right. I know. For example, we have a new one day event coming up that I've Tried to make affordable to anybody and everybody because what we do is not about money. On top of that, I've also spent considerable capital in developing an online school that no matter what income level you're at, you can be a part of it. You can get some coaching and mentoring and stuff along the way. I've also spent considerable income in our four day live event called Transfer Me Live that we'll actually do this year with probably a hybrid approach because of COVID of live and virtual. Okay. All of those things have been planned five years ago.
Right.
If you recall, you were sitting at a table before we ever did the first trans from you brand or first transmu Live event. And I read to all of our team members at the table, our leaders and everything, production folks, video folks, everybody. I just said, guys, it's been so hard for me to communicate what I've envisioned, what I see in my mind, what I see that's finished before we actually attain it, that I've taken the time to. To write it out.
And you wrote that thing in so much detail. This is what I remember. You wrote it from the perspective of a visitor coming to the event, someone who came to be transformed. And you took it from the very beginning. When they're scrolling on Facebook and they see the ad for the event, they're like, oh, maybe there's some hope and all that kind of stuff. You took us through the whole journey and you explained it in so much detail and there was so much clarity that you literally. And because you're so emotionally attached to the outcome, you. You literally started tearing up.
Tearing up is a small word. Yeah.
And I think other members of our team did as well because you made it so clear you're talking about creating a plan. Another thing I've heard you say a lot is you have to have clarity. How much is that kind of essentially what you're saying with that?
Well, yeah. So most people think they have to have total clarity in order to make a plan. What they don't realize is the plan creates the clarity. The plan creates the clarity.
That's really powerful.
Right.
Most people wait to feel like they're clear.
Yeah. They're like. They get into analysis, paralysis mode. Everything has to be right. Everything's got to be perfect. All this stuff has to be right. Look, my first business I developed are built from out of the trash piles of a construction site that I get my tools and things that I needed to get it going. That one lesson taught me that I don't have to have it all Figured out. I just have to get it to as tight as I can possibly get it before I do it. But I'm not expecting perfection. We've got members on our team who are more adapted to look. It's got to be perfect. Let's make sure it's perfect. I'm like, no, let's make sure we serve some people well, I don't understand. We're getting a worldwide audience. Don't we just focus on the usa? No, because the world needs what we have to share. I don't care who hears it, as long as they hear it and do something with it. Right. All these different parts and pieces are part of that clarity. Right. In five years time, the Journey Principles Institute will have millions of people whose lives have been impacted and I dare say transformed and changed. It will be a business that allows us to travel the world and speak all over the place to help people with their lives or businesses and stuff like that. It will have a suite of other professional speakers that we have that are what I like that Rory Vaden refers to as mission driven messengers. And these people will have been people who are on the platform not because they want the platform, but because they have the experience and have earned the right to be on the platform. Does that make sense? They will be people who.
Teach from a place of experience. They lived it, they breathed it, they overcame it, and all they want to do is help someone else do the same.
You thought all of this is.
All this is. I know the size of the venues we need. I know the type of collateral we need. I know the type of swag we're going to create. I know the type of website and web pages that need to be built. I know the type of speakers I'm looking for. I know the type of strategist I'm looking for.
This is because you spent time already thinking, thinking about this and putting in that work rather than just distracting you.
Well, yeah, I'll give you an example. We're still in the plan phase. So I want people to understand how important a plan is. If I didn't have a plan and I'm doing what I'm doing now and I'm doing videos, I'm doing content and all this kind of stuff, okay? And let's say we get a lot of traction, a lot of momentum, and yeah, I'm doing my thing, people will find me inspirational, educational, whatever terminology people want to use, okay, Maybe they think I'm a dork. I don't care. Whatever their thing is, right? And what we Got momentum. And then God forbid I have something that jeopardizes my life, right? Meaning I get sick, I get hit by a bus or something stupid. Okay?
What happens to everything we built? It's destroyed literally overnight. Okay? I have to think in terms of five years in creating a plan because I need to create an infrastructure that in the event that I'm no longer here, like Steve Myrick is no longer here in my life, that my legacy continues through the hearts and the minds of other people. And if they understand my heart and mind and I've spent the time to invest in them, to disciple them or train them or teach them or educate them, and they can understand the heart that really drives what we do, then I can create a foundation that they can stand on. Okay? That comes from the plan side of things. A plan is nothing more than the process in which you're going to go from A to B to Z, so on and so forth. If you don't have a plan to develop your financial life or your educational life, or what we refer to as educational in our system, or your professional life or your relationships or whatever, you will continue to do the same crap over and over and over and over and over. And you'll be like, I don't know why things aren't changing. I don't know why I can't make ends meet. I don't know. Dude, stop spending all your damn money.
Right? Stop lowering your standards and dating people who don't value who you are.
The problem is both of those are emotional decisions. And until you understand what creates those emotional decisions, it makes it very difficult to solve those emotional decisions. A plan does that. A plan says, I need to do this, I need to learn this. I need to have these types of relationships. I need to have these types of routines. I need to have these types of milestones. And you see that highly successful people.
That build businesses, that build relationships, that are.
Entertainers and or people who are in the athletic field, who become entrepreneurs, they are able to create opportunity after opportunity after opportunity after opportunity because they have a plan to execute each of those opportunities. It's not saying they're not going to have holdbacks or problems along the way, because we all do. Shoot. Daymond John said recently that I think only about 30% of the businesses he's invested in Shark Tank have actually turned into be something powerful.
Wow.
Right. But those 30%, I think, was the term, and I could be wrong, so don't quote me on that, but that 30. Well, think about that. The 30% outweighs the other ones that weren't successful. Right. You see what I'm saying? But like every shark on Shark Tank, for example, everybody's got a specific metric system that they're using to make the decision about whether or not they invest.
Right.
If they don't know what to invest in or what they didn't like, well, couldn't figure out valuations and all that kind of stuff, they couldn't do that. Then guess what, what happens? They would be investing a bunch of stuff and losing much money. A plan creates the methodology in which you can achieve any aspiration or goal.
So do you think that the people who feel like they're living the same day over and over and over again, they're living in this endless cycle of being stuck and making the wrong decisions? Feels like Groundhog Day, right?
Yeah.
Do you think that that is largely because they haven't taken the time to create a plan of action?
You know, if you look at the first step of the seven levels of life mastery that I share about a lot of time, awakening only occurs when the pain that you have is not outweighed by the progress that you want.
In other words, you have to have enough grit and ready to go kind of thing on creating your new life that will force you through the pain that you're currently suffering. Now, pain comes in a variety of forms. For some it's, there's no more money in my checking account. I got another Verizon bill to pay or you left me again. Right. It's like it shows itself in a variety of different forms. It doesn't have to be like someone cut your arm off. Right? To the person who's experiencing the pain, it's the most painful thing they've ever had. To someone else who's overcome that pain, it's no longer painful at all.
Because there's a lot of people though, who would just sit in that pain for long periods of time. I'm guilty of it. I've done it. I did that for years. I knew there was stuff I needed to change because I was studying, you know, me, studied all these self help gurus and all this kind of stuff. I knew what I needed to change, but I wasn't ready to decide to actually change.
How many people struggle with that?
According to Tom Harris Poll, about 70% of the population. Right. Which is why we do what we do. Right.
I'm on my personal mission to cut that number in half in the next two years. That's awesome. Right? Which means we have a lot of work to do.
Yeah, we do.
Please.
By the way, if you're watching this, you want to help us with that? Share it with a friend, like subscrib. Subscribe all that comment below if you have questions because it really, really does help the channel grow.
Well, it's not just about growth. I want to make an impact. I could care less if we have five people on the channel as long as I'm impacting five lives, you know that. But.
Anyway, so we've talked a little bit about, number one, which is learning to dream and aspire and actually have something to achieve, something that a desired outcome you want. We talked a little bit about not having a plan. The third thing specifically that I see that most people struggle with that are not making progress, in contrast to the people who like seemingly consistently make progress and have everything they want, is lack of focus.
So you could do all the dreaming, you could have the plan. Gosh, this was me, man. This was exactly me, wasn't it? Because I had taken the time. Maybe my plan could have been a little bit more specific, but you could have both of those first two things in place. But if you're distracted all the time and you're not focused in the execution of your plan, you're gonna be stuck.
Well, I mean, your lack of focus is directly related to your lack of action. So if you are not making the results you want, then it's because that you're not, you don't have the focus that you need. Right. We've talked about distraction before on the channel specifically, and the types of distractions that are getting most people away. Which right now is going to be media based sources, so video, audio, it even could be a book, right? If you're spending all your time reading fiction books, but yet you want your life to change because you like a nice romance novel, for example, and not reading a personal development book, then you were investing your time in the wrong lane.
Yeah, I guess the difference between you're watching a rom com, right, to try to make your relationships better, but in reality you should be reading a book about how to improve your relationships.
Exactly. Focus intensifies the plan. Focus basically takes and removes the need for distraction, the need for separation, the need for just some kind of like ancillary entertainment value. I'm a big believer that you bust ass six days a week and you have one day of rest. And on that one day of rest you can do your entertainment, you can do whatever you want, you know, but essentially during the first six days you are busting it right? You're reading the books, you're watching the videos, you're doing the homework. Maybe you're in transform you online. Maybe you're at a live event. Maybe you're creating a vision board. Maybe we're working with you to create your plan. But no matter what's going on.
You are taking action every single day. Every single day. I've shared here before that. You know, my first four years in business, I didn't take a single day off. Not one day. Holidays, Christmas. Maybe I should have. Sorry. Jesus, I love you. Right. I didn't take a single day off. I had focused.
You weren't homeless when you started.
But had I not had that, had I not had that driver ambition to be focused, would I actually be in.
This chair right now if my experience tells me anything? Probably not exactly.
That's where people need to understand that their amount of focus will lead to their amount of success. You've got to be focused. You got to be honed in. You got to be able to eliminate distraction when your buddy calls you and he's like, hey, man, Covid's over. We're all going out. We're all going to go hang out, and you go out for a party night when you know you've got to get ready for a big deal or a purchase or you're creating a presentation or something to close a deal or what. You know what I'm saying? You got to have the right priorities. Focus creates priorities. Right priorities lead to the right actions at the right time, in the right moment, in the right way.
And the plan helps with those priorities as well. Exactly. That's why I love that you put them in order as well. Like, the first thing you got to do is dream.
Yeah.
If you're not dreaming, I have friends like this.
Well, if you haven't dream. If you're not dreaming, you've given up.
Well, I have friends who I talk to, who literally, they feel depressed about their life. They feel a lack of direction. But then I ask them, I'm like, well, do you have a plan for your life? Do you know what you want? They're like, no.
Yeah.
I'm like, well, no wonder you feel directionless. You haven't decided what you wanted.
And I recall a very similar young man with nice hair that used to feel the same way.
Yeah. 100%.
Right. But the fact that you're able to coach them and counsel them based on things that we've done here says a lot. Right. So at the end of the day, I don't Know that these things are shocking as much as they are instrumental. Yeah, right. Those three steps are instrumental in somebody getting breakthrough and becoming highly successful.
Perfect. Let's dive into a couple more quick questions we got from the audience and then we'll wrap it up. What is the mindset of high achievers?
I think I just got through describing. You all pretty much did. Yeah. The mindset of a high achiever is I've got work to do and I'm going to do the work. Nice.
Love it. Why do most people fail in life?
Most people fail in life as the common denominator is because they don't know what they have in the tank.
Yeah. I literally heard you say before, most people fail just because they don't know better. Mm.
Yeah. Yeah. I think that's the number one common denominator. I can think back to my life and all the people we coach, from the entertainers we coach to the business owners, to the hard working moms, soccer moms and dads and whatnot.
All of them, all of them, their next level was directly correlated to their level of understanding that they have in that moment.
Sounds like it's very, very important if you feel directionless or if you feel stuck or lost in life that you start consuming positive information.
Yeah, well, it's not just positive information. The information that you consume should be directly correlated to the plan, and your plan is directly correlated to the outcome. So if I'm like, we've dealt a lot of. I've dealt with a lot of folks. You know, I flew down to Texas not long ago to meet with some very, very high income earners. People have much higher incomes than I do.
Oh, yeah.
Okay.
And at the end of the day, one of the things that keeps coming to the surface. Right. Is if you have a really strong financial situation but you, maybe your marriage is the problem, then you need to be consuming information and developing the muscle memory and the tactics and the strategies needed and to improve the marriage.
Do you think most people avoid, like, if they have one area of their life that's kind of not so hot, but then they have some other areas that they're comfortable in? Do you think one of the other reasons why people don't do what you're saying is because it's uncomfortable to try to work on a struggle area? Yeah.
Well, I would say it this way. I think that most people who choose to intentionally focus on an area that they're already really good at, I would dare say that their identity is tied to it. I would dare say that hey, look, if I don't do this and this falls apart all of a sudden, I don't have meaning.
Wow.
And I've seen that play out several times that, you know, when the, when the Trade Center, World Trade center got hit several years ago, you had people who chose to essentially leap from a building because they lost all the financial stuff. Now you had others that were obviously trapped. Right. So I don't want to take away from that, but we've had people in various dot com bubbles that have bust, that have taken their own life because they, because they're scared to start over one.
Because they tie so much of their self worth to their career, to the professional.
Exactly. So who am I going to be to my family? Who am I going to be to my friends? It happens with athletes, it happens with entertainers.
You talk about balance. So important for people's overall mental well being.
Exactly.
Okay, so the final question that I have is what is the, I guess the main sacrifice people have to make to become successful?
The main sacrifice that people have to become successful is going to be time.
Time.
People like to use the word spend time. I like to use the word invest time. In order to make any dream a reality, you have to be able to invest the appropriate time needed to bring that reality to fruition.
I mean, you know this from being behind the scenes. Just because you and I spend so much time together.
That.
I am very driven, I am very.
I'm going to make this happen and bring this into reality. Now I use a plan, I use all the techniques we've already talked about. But the one caveat to that is I know that I'm investing time intentionally in a specific area. And as a result, I've had to create a plan and parameters around how I invest my time.
I'm going to again be very transparent with everybody.
The greatest regret that I have on this planet as of this moment, I might even get emotional on this one. We'll see.
The greatest thing that I have struggled with and the regret I have in this moment was investing two years chasing after professional attribute and wasting two years of health that my wife had. I was so focused on creating and building and growing and stuff like that. And I wasted two years of my wife's health. For those of you who don't know, my wife has a chronic illness that has stolen a certain amount of help from her on a consistent basis. And in that moment she was, you know, in those two years time frame she was still running, she was still doing, and she was letting me chase My dream, she was letting me trace, you know, my impact and my ultimate purpose. And.
Those are, that's two years I can't get back.
You know, I don't have the power or the authority or even the proceeds to be able to somehow magically repair her, you know, physically so she can have that again. So I missed the two years of traveling with her. I missed two years of date nights, I missed two years of reading books together. We used to read at night together, right? It's not saying we can't do that stuff now, but there's this limitation into the types of things we can do together. You know, had I known that she was going to be sick or not necessarily get sick, but you know, that illness was going to show itself and begin to control more of her mobility and things of that nature, had I known that, I'd have set everything else aside for that two year window.
Wow.
I would have done it that way. I say that to say that time is going to be your greatest investment and your greatest sacrifice. So invest it wisely, right? Don't. If you are already in a committed relationship with someone who loves you, someone who supports you, you already have kids, do not alienate their needs simply because you're trying to chase a dream. Instead, sit down with them, Come up with a strategy that forces you to, you know, to put the phone down or whatever, whatever that thing is going to be so that everybody's in agreement during this time restraint. You're chasing your dream. You're putting in this extra effort during this time frame. You're with us now. I can tell you that in most cases, most even spouses or people in committed relationships that are together, in most cases, if you guys agree on a two year window for the next two years, we are agreeing that I'm going to go after this and you're going to help me along the way as much as you can, or you're going to chase your dream and I'm going to help you as long as you can. Right? Whatever that two year window is, this is our agreement.
That once it trips over two years in one day, then that agreement is null and void. And now you got to restrategize and reposition most dreams, most major dreams, especially in the professional business world, take two to five years to come from to fruition. So no matter what you're telling yourself, we make it big when we got millions of dollars coming in, it's going to be amazing. It's. Oh, wow. I got news for you. You got two years to Two to five years of sacrifice where work has to be done.
I know from experience, if you're doing everything right, if you have some of these issues and you're holding yourself back on any of those three areas you talked about, like focus, like I did, it can be more like 10 years. And I wasted, what, six to seven.
Look, I've dropped as much gold as I possibly can today in hopes that this can change somebody's life.
I think it will. I think that this is extremely valuable.
Because, again, the greatest thing that I see is this lack of awareness, this lack of knowledge, this lack of understanding, and this lack of focus. You know, if you can learn to dream, we can help you create. We can actually literally help you create your plan.
That's what we're technically here for.
That's exactly what we're here for.
Just check out the channel. We have a lot of information about.
Stuff like that, you know, and the third thing is, then it becomes comes down to you. It's a focus. You got to put the work in. You know, I'll close with this real fast. I had this one thing where this one person come up to us. It's been years and years ago, and they came to me and said, well, you know, I've been doing the work, but nothing's changed. I said, okay, show me your work.
Smart question.
Show me your workbook. Show me your vision board. Because there's two things that could have happened. Either they weren't doing the work, or they were doing the work incorrectly.
Right?
Right. If they're doing the work incorrectly, that's a teaching a process kind of thing. If they're not doing the work at all, that's an internal thing. Guess what we discovered?
They weren't doing it.
They weren't doing the work. They weren't doing the work. It was all lip service. You know, we did.
What we call a reset challenge several months ago. Just like a little thing. We just threw up on Facebook for fun at the beginning of the year. And I've met with several as part of that. You know, some of the folks that have joined TransferMe Online, I spent one on one time with each of them. And I'll say the top four. Okay, so the top four people I spent time with. I'll just kind of use this as an example. The top four people that I spent time with after the event, after I had done the training. Right. Which is all about creating your dream and creating your imagination, Using your imagination to focus on your eight pillars of life. What outcomes do you want and how are you, like, creating essentially a vision? The vision you want, essentially. Right. Of the four people, their first calls, of those four people, only one of them had done the work. Wow. Because the first question I asked is, okay, did you guys do step number one on all the calls? Well, you know, I got busy. I got it. I'm like, guys, it's step number one for a reason.
Right. You can't go from. You can't jump to step number 10.
It's a really powerful point, though, because going back to the first two things that you said are important, before you can even get to that point where focus is important, you have to take the time to dream and create a plan. And I know most people I know avoid that.
Yeah. Look, you're either going to invest your time or you're not. Okay.
Time specifically is a more valuable commodity or tool or resource than even money. Right. Because as long as I'm alive, I know I can create resource. I can create an income. Right. If I'm paralyzed, even from the neck down, I can still use my brain. You see what I'm saying?
Yeah.
So time, on the other hand, is. I've been telling this to my kids. It's like all of them have been coming to me recently. Seems like the days are getting shorter and things are moving faster. I'm like, that's because you're aging, Right.
That sucks.
You become more aware of the power and.
Well, the power. The power, the authority of time. You become more aware of it. Right. So in this resource, invest it wisely. Don't invest your time in distractions. Invest your time in education. Invest your time in progress. Invest your time in dreaming. Invest your time in relationships. Do so strategically and you will win the day.
Powerful. Thanks, man.
Hey, guys, hope you enjoyed this video. And if you did, I invite you to check out this one right here because I know you're going to love it. Take care. Steve Myrick, my first mentor, asked me one time what difference between a rich man was and a poor man was. And I thought, like, probably most people do, that money's the difference. He very quickly corrected me and said, money has nothing to do with the difference. It's all.
