Welcome to the Journey Principles where we show you how to go from stuck to unstoppable with life strategies that work. Now here's your host and creator of the Transform youm Framework, Stephen Scoggins.
Hey, guys. Welcome back to the Journey Principles. So happy you came here to join us. Coming to you not live, but recorded from the Journey Principles Institute here in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the live event center here with my buddy and as always, director of connections, Connor Kraft. Rocking the cool T shirt. Yeah, Transform. You love the shirt, man.
Love it.
Yeah, we're kind of bummed. We had a live event planned for October and we were doing really well, but now we're like coronavirus. No. We're not sure we can help people, but it's forced us to kind of rethink how we can serve you guys and what we can do to help you guys become unstoppable and more successful in your life. So we have some exciting things we'll talk about probably three or four shows from now. We're pretty stoked about it. It'll be a much easier way to help you get the content you need. Learn how to apply it, including one on one coaching and some other things we're going to be doing. So I'm pretty stoked about that. But anyway, today's topic is forcing me to talk about which is mindset. Mindset is one of the more frustrating ones for me to work through because unfortunately, mindset, you can go a lot of different directions when you start talking about mindset. So what we thought we do is while the end of the show or towards the middle of the show, we're going to give you three steps to make sure you can develop a successful mindset. We thought we start off by talking about the three things that you need to know about mindset, which is what it is, what it's not, and what you can do about it or do with it when it's applied properly.
So sounds good to me because I think, I think mindset is a buzzword.
There's a lot of frustrates me about it. Right, right. Is because it is a buzzword. You know, there's, it's kind of like. And I hate to suit. I love Simon Sinek. I love, in fact, Simon, I love all your content.
I love Simon Sinek.
Love your content. But his content and his first piece of content. Start with why has been taught so much by so many different people, so.
Many copycats, by the way. That's how you know it was a really good piece of content.
Yeah.
Right, Kudos.
Yeah, totally. But unfortunately it's now become a buzzword. Right, right. It's now become a cliche. Right. In some aspects. Now when you hear Simon.
Simon teaching one sliver of it, like start with Y is like one sliver.
Oh, I know. But what I'm saying is when Simon teaches it, it's obviously not a buzzword. It's a very, very, very thought out and methodical plan on how to kind of move forward. But in doing so, there's a lot of talk about mindset. It's kind of like the word entrepreneur or leadership. Right. Those things are interchangeably used nowadays.
Well, and also Carol Dweck wrote a very, very, very popular book. Very good book.
That's right.
I can't remember. It was a few years back. I don't really remember exactly how he was.
About five, six years ago.
Yeah, it was called Mindset. And, and she talks about.
Did thousands of studies.
Yeah.
Did an entire like study on before the book was written.
And her whole thing was basically there's two different types of mindsets. There's a growth mindset, there's a fixed mindset. There's a lot of people talking about this. Tom Bilyeu over at Impact Theory. Love you, Tom.
Basically, you got a romance going on.
I don't know, dude. I've watched probably. Tom Bilyeu is probably one of the top three.
No, he's got great, he actually has great guests.
In terms of content I've studied, he's probably in my top three.
Yeah, we're going to start reaching out to some, some folks that have been on some of his shows because, yeah, he does have great guests.
He does great guests. I'd say he's probably one of the top interviewers in the, in the industry.
Oh, for sure. Well, he does a heavy, A lot of research.
Very good.
Ironically, that can kind of pivot to what we're talking about with mindset, so.
Sure.
Yeah. So the book was phenomenal. What I did differently was I started thinking about, okay, so there's a topic of mindset, but how does it go into thought process? Right. So when I say mindset, what I'm really thinking about is how you think, how you think about. You know, if that can include your beliefs, it can include your worldview, it can include a lot of different things that shape how you think and process information. Right. So what I don't think mindset is, is. I don't think it's a buzzword. Right. I don't think it in many circles has been Taught at a very detailed level.
Do you mean it's not just a buzzword? I don't know what you mean by that.
Well, yeah, I think it's not just a buzzword.
It clearly is.
Yeah, it's a buzzword. But what I'm saying is I don't think it should be a buzzword because it's important. I see, Right.
So it shouldn't be thought of as something that's like cliche and it's like, oh, yeah, it's icing on the cake. This is like a real deal lesson.
Yeah. I mean, living the life you love is not one action. It's a consistent way of life and a consistent set of actions.
Well, and we just talked about, I mean, obviously two podcasts ago, we list those three things that are the biggest differences between successful and unsuccessful is the way they think, the way they think, the way they learn, and then the way that they act and live, basically. And then we talked about the differences in lifestyles and that's really like the way that you live your life. Mindset is more along the lines of the think. I think. So the way that they think exactly.
Where the transformational and traditional is more the way you focus.
Exactly. Or the way that you live. Correct. So I'm thinking we've taught the way that you live the way you learn is pretty self explanatory. You just need to go out and study.
Well, let's talk about that. So mindset. So there's actually three different ways to learn. There's kinesthetic, which is with your hands. There's visual. So that's people that are watching YouTube right now. You're probably a visual learner because you're probably on YouTube and you're watching. There's the auditory, which is another person's probably listening to us on a podcast.
Right now or is listening to us on YouTube and not watching the video.
Which is entirely possible. Yeah, I do that all the time, actually. You know, so those are three different learning styles. Right. When it comes to forming a mindset or renewing a mind, what I like to refer what the Bible calls renewing your mind. Right. When it comes to doing those things, what we're really talking about is taking a mind that's dormant and awakening it. Right. We're talking about basically shaking it loose. Shaking the cobwebs loose. Because it's probably been sat in a state of apathy for too long.
Yeah. It's probably stuck in the same habitual way of thinking, which means that you're not Going to have bright new ideas every day because you're stuck in routine.
And the way the brain works, Right. Is the brain creates new highways. It has neuroplasticity. It has the ability to grow and change. Right. And if you're not challenging it on a regular basis, unfortunately, you will get stagnant.
Right.
And if you get stagnant, you're not going to take the action you take, which means you're not going to get the results that you want, which means you're going to stay stuck.
So the punchline is you can fundamentally change the way that you think.
Absolutely.
And in order to do that, the best way to do it is to adopt a healthier mindset. And that's kind of what we're talking about.
Yeah, absolutely. And we'll go into a deeper dive probably in the next show on a couple different types of mindsets that we believe in. Specifically, I like to come at it from the place in which the way they think, which has been talked about in the book Mindset before.
Yeah, I like to look at it like this. I think there's a lot of people talking about that whole growth versus fixed mindset. The way we teach it is very similar. We talk about thinking patterns. Right. But you could call it mindset as well. We call it the rigid versus expansive thinking patterns or mindset. It's basically very similar to growth versus fixed mindset.
Well, I'll tell you where I got to see the living embodiment of this. So, as you know, I got two boys, right? I've got one boy who is essentially fearless. He'll keep going after something till he gets it right. He's naturally sociable. He's naturally out there building friends all the time. Meanwhile, I have another son who, if it doesn't come naturally, first, a lot of times we have to get on him and encourage him. No, try again, Right. He's a very linear thought process in mind. I mean, he sees only one way to solve a problem where the other son's like, no, if I don't get it that way, I'll just get it the other way. You see what I'm saying? That is a type of thinker, right? That's the way in which they think. Now, some of this. The reason I'm bringing this up is because some of this is based on how you were created, of course. Right. So there's an element of it that if you are more of a linear thinker, right. It's going to take time and a little more effort to work through Becoming a flexible thinker.
Right. And yeah, and I see what you were just. So before we actually launched this podcast, we were talking about what we should potentially be actually making the podcast about and how to share it properly. Right. And how to give you guys the value. And one of the things we teach here at Transform you is this concept of. Of thinking wavelengths, actually. Who came up with that?
Original. Tom Patterson was the original creator of Thinking Wavelengths. Ironically, he's not the original creator because when I read one of his books, one of the things that I learned about Tom is he actually got it from a guy that he was flying back with China.
Oh, that's crazy.
Yeah. Now Tom invented the ATM machine amongst a bunch of other things. The first person to introduce me to the concept of thinking wavelengths was actually Chris Locurdo.
I see.
I went through a process that he had several years ago and learn the process Thinking Wavelengths. And then I went to go research it just more and more because it was so impactful, like it was so incredibly strong for me.
Absolutely. And so that's a valuable piece of information. I don't think it necessarily. I don't know, we don't want to take all the time today.
I think it deserves its own show.
It does exactly honor the creator. We will probably do a whiteboard lesson on it or something like that because it's a very, very, very.
It was transformational for me.
But basically all you need to know is that some people will have a more naturally easy time with some of these things than others. However, there are other things that same person would struggle with.
It doesn't stop you from making a difference and trying. Exactly. And that's one of the things we've been working with our son that is more of a linear thinker.
Right.
He's got a more of a rigid minded, like his mind is rigid, like it's. Everything's inside a box.
I would look at it more as like procedural. It's step by step. He's more systematic, has to precede the other one because he's a more logical thinker.
Oh, totally.
So you know logic, logical thinkers. I kind of have a little bit of that as well. And so I think that when you're so much of a logical thinker, it can actually hold you back to some degree.
Well, yeah, because you only see one way to get stuff done.
Right now I have a little bit more of like I have the ability to look at other ways to do things. He's an entrepreneur guy, but you can definitely, like, if you focus too much on there is a right way to do things. That's when you fall into the trap. That's right when you think there is one right way to do this.
Yeah. And I think in the next podcast, we'll probably jump into a deep dive of each one of those different types of thinking processes and kind of discover. Lets you kind of figure out where you're at on that spectrum. My biggest thing I wanted to make sure I committed was is that everyone, whether you're already thinking from a rigid kind of process or an expansive mindset or growth or fixed mindset, it doesn't matter. Everyone can benefit from learning to grow it.
Absolutely.
And develop it. Okay. And I think that's one of the biggest things that the things that we need to take away. One of my biggest mistakes in life was I used to look at my life from the inside out. Okay. So when you look at your life from the inside out, unfortunately, that means you only are looking at life from one perspective. Right. One avenue.
Your own.
Right, Right. Your own. So. And that one perspective and avenue, by definition, is a linear thought process. Okay. One of the things that I've done for myself that I was taught to do a long time ago was to step outside of my life. And here's what I mean by that. I think we talked about this before. I can't remember. We've put so much content. I can't remember if it's on a podcast, previous podcast, or one of our whiteboard lessons. But there's a process called disassociation. Disassociation allows you to look at your entire life from the perspective of a moviegoer. You actually step out of your life for just a minute, sit in a chair and play a movie reel. Right. And you're looking for the different co stars, you're looking for the villains. You're looking for the lead role.
So let me just stop you right there real quick. So when you're saying you're looking at it as a movie reel, you're essentially looking at your thoughts, your memories.
You're not literally putting anything on an actual theater. You're basically.
Well, hopefully someone was gonna go that far. Right.
What you're doing is you're. You're basically. It's the way that you're taking a step outside of your perspective, and you're trying to look at your past or whatever it is you're watching objectively so that you can figure out, okay, what people. And that's where you were kind of going with that. I just wanted to clarify that it's not a literal movie reel, guys.
Well, I was.
In case any of you are.
Yeah, I'm kind of confused. Dumbfounded. That got confusing. But, yeah, no, absolutely. So you want to step outside, you want to look at. And you want to look. Right. Right. You'll see that all the problems that have happened in your life and all the potential problems in your future have multiple ways to solve. Right. You'll see there's opportunities for you to grow and prepare. You'll see that there's opportunities for you to deal with any kind of issue that had come up. Right. There's lots of different things you can get through with this process of disassociation because you're not looking. You're no longer looking at your life from one fixed point of view. Now you're looking at your life from multiple points of view. Right. It's also wise to sit down with a mentor and a coach, and actually you tell them what you noticed in your movie reel. You share your experiences with them, and they'll probably give you yet another perspective on how it can be positioned. Does that make sense? So that's just a general way in which to kind of continually develop your mind and kind of keep moving forward.
I also think about it like this. Only a healthy mindset. Right. Can bring out the most of every trial or every opportunity. So only a healthy mindset can bring out the most of every opportunity or trial. Right. So the way in which you view your world determines whether or not you're a victor or a victim. Okay. So that's why we're going to go into a deep dive on the next podcast to kind of explain these.
Yeah, Next podcast, we're going to really go deep on the differences between what we call a rigid mindset and an expansive mindset.
Yeah. I mean, let's face it, the greatest tool and or weapon that you'll ever use either for yourself or towards the world, is your mind. Right. Had I not been able to build my mind and stop thinking from a linear point of view, I never would have gotten to the place I'm at today. Nor would you have. When I met you, you were very like, this is how it's supposed to be, period.
You know, took me a lot of pain and a lot of failure and a lot of not getting where I wanted to go and staying stuck for several years being stubborn to eventually be like, okay, I probably am missing something here.
Yeah, I'm curious. So what's been your greatest challenge and your greatest victory in your mind, using your mind the way in which you kind of perceive the world.
My greatest challenge is probably taming my mind. So basically taking all of the rapid thoughts and ideas and desires and basically everything that goes. I feel like my mind moves at like a trillion miles an hour and I can never slow it down enough to really focus on one thing. And because of that it's easy to procrastinate a lot. It's easy to like. I have a habit of just getting up and going around and thinking because I have so much on my mind at any given time that it's very, very difficult for me. I'm very adhd, so that's part of the issue. But it's very, very diffic difficult for me unless I have some kind of medication which I've taken in the past and didn't end up being the greatest for me.
Almost destroyed your mind.
Yeah, yeah. So.
Anyway, so basically I would say that the biggest hurdle for me is really just taming my mind so that like I can make sure that on a day to day basis I am focused. The biggest victory, I don't know because I'm looking at victories as like things that I've overcome. But there's also things that have always come naturally to me. So I could say a natural gift of mine that I've never had to struggle with is two things. I am a natural at thinking ahead. So there are certain people who are just doers and they struggle to think ahead. They struggle to actually plan ahead and plan things. I always do too much of that. I always, almost always have the right way to do things. Not because I'm smarter than everybody else, but because I've spent hours and hours and hours of not wasted time, but I already thinking of different potential solutions. So I've already spent a lot more time thinking on it. So I'm a natural thinker.
And then the other thing that I was going to say I forgot because I'm super adhd. So there we go. But yeah, that's basically okay. Okay.
No, that's great. I think it's important for people to hear where we struggle at. So when the greatest challenge I have with my mind. Yeah. Is I'm excellent at seeing five years ahead, but I struggle to see five minutes ahead. So one of the things that I've learned in order to strengthen my mind is focus on what I'm good at and then have other people who are really good at what I'm not good at around me to help me backfill my blind spot. Right. And I think that's one thing that we can all do today to kind of make sure that we're getting further faster. Right now, we promise to give you three steps to actually get started in developing a successful mindset. Okay? And I want to hit on those just really fast. So the first thing like you do with anything else that we're going to teach you to do is we're going to teach you how to acknowledge where you're at and be okay with it. In other words, it's okay to say, hey, look, I think this way. I want to think differently. And that's okay. Sometimes when I'm working with people who are more linear thinkers, when I say you need to acknowledge that you're not thinking in the best way you can, they hear, so you don't like me. Like, it becomes personal.
Or they hear like, so you're saying I'm wrong. And they're like, it can be that.
But it has more to do with whether you don't. I'm not. You're not accepting me.
Okay.
Okay. So I want to put that out there because some of you who are listening right now or even watching right now are linear based thinkers, right? And I'm not saying you're not wrong, I'm not saying you're wrong, and I'm not saying that you don't matter. Right? I'm saying we do accept you and we want you to have the best of life and the best thing that life has to offer. That's what we want for you. Okay? In order to do that, in order to get there, we're going to work through growing, the way in which you think, the processing speed and the focus that you use your mind for.
Because if you use your mind in the right way, you're going to get good results.
But even if you're thinking the wrong.
Way, you're going to have catastrophic results.
You can absolutely, for sure. Well, that's why I'm saying get really.
Lucky, which is kind of rare, by the way. This is a side note. We need to do a whole podcast. And luck, that'll be a fun one.
Yeah, you think so? Yeah. All right, you guys, tell us if we should do a whole podcast on luck versus success. Yeah, but I've got my thoughts for sure.
Yeah, I do too.
All right, so again, step one is acknowledge where you're at. Be okay with it. No harm, no foul, no judgment, no condemnation. Hey, look, I lean more this direction. I know I need to grow. Okay, great, you're done. Alright then look for ways to Activate growth or amplify growth. Alright? So step two, activate and amplify. Okay? Some of you who are listening and watching right now are going to look for ways to activate thinking patterns that have been laying dormant, okay? They haven't been used, so they haven't been worked out. So you're going to activate that part of your brain, you're going to activate that part of your mind. The way in which you focus, the way in which you go after things, your belief systems, things of that nature. Some of you who are already predisposed to find creative solutions to every single problem are simply going to want to amplify where you're at today, right? So acknowledge step two. Activate and amplify. Step three, Always be willing to adjust. Always be willing to adjust where you're heading, what you're thinking about and what your focus is on. You know, one of the things, one of the most devastating things that you can have in your brain specifically is to talk yourself out of whether or not there's possibilities in your self esteem. Okay? One of the most difficult things I've seen people struggle with, including in my own household and the businesses that I own, people that are typically more linear thinkers struggle to know that there's a better way and there's possibilities that lay ahead, right? Don't let your first attempt that maybe not go the way you want it stop you from getting up and trying again. That's the primary linchpin that I've seen for linear thinkers is whether or not to get back up and try again. Okay? If you do that one thing, maybe there's something that you want to do, maybe what you're not really good at, just keep trying. That one thing will actually help you grow your mind. Also, as you're trying to grow your mind, remember the three different learning styles that we talked about, okay? Kinesthetic with your hands, auditory with your ears, and visual with your eyes. Most of us have two of those that we really learn really, really well with. And the third, maybe it's not so great. As you're looking to grow your mind and grow your mindset, look at the two different learning styles that you can get. Okay. That you gravitate towards first and then get the content you need from those learning styles. Does that make sense? I know it's kind of in depth a little bit too long, but I wanted to make sure that I gave some actual intel, if you will, that my buddy John always says actual intel give you the actual steps you need to kind of get going. Does that I hope that was helpful on this episode.
I think it's very helpful. And I think that in the next podcast, when we dive into the actual differences in characteristics between rigid thinkers and expansive thinkers, you're gonna know where you fall. Yeah, it's gonna make it very, very much clear. And we're also gonna try to fit in there some practical examples and tips for how you could actually go from one edge of the spectrum to another.
So, yeah, it's gonna be awesome about that. Yeah, I know. Again, short and sweet. Some, some concepts don't take 50 minutes or an hour or two hours to, to uncover and explore and kind of apply. Concepts like this can be short, sweet, to the point. And again, that's our goal, is to make life mastery simple. We want to take you from stuck to unstoppable in any area of your life, but we want to do so with bite sized pieces of content that you can digest, ponder and take action on, basically.
