Steve D Valentine explains why having a real estate license is necessary to receive referral payments (you can't pay someone for business without a licensed agent). He positions getting a license as a viable side-hustle, emphasizes matching clients to agents by personality and fit (citing Dave Ramsey-style matching), and frames referrals as an active responsibility—ensuring the referred agent will work for the client, not merely passing leads.

Why do they need to have the real estate license in order to be a referral? Because you can't pay somebody for business without them being a licensed agent. So by getting a real estate license, they're legal to allow to pay commission. It's a great piece. I mean, anybody looking for a side hustle, I mean, that's what I would do. And the cool thing about that is that if you are the person, like, I may approach this gal and she may know another real estate agent, that's a good personality, that she wants to fit somebody, that's okay, right? The goal is to give her a path, right? And the goal when you're referring is, you know, I love the Dave Ramsey thing is I may talk to somebody. I'm like, man, their personality would fit, fit really good with this agent, right? And so you do have that ability to go, I'm serving this client with my referral fee, not by just sending them to somebody, but who's going to really work for this person. That's where the difference is in the referring is like, it's not just the past. It's like, I'm going to work for this referral, right? The whole point is to connect you with somebody that will do the job that I can do or close to it. That's the goal in it.
