In this autobiographical segment, Steve Varsano recounts his upbringing and early work experiences that shaped his character and ambitions. Born in the Bronx and raised in New Jersey, he began working at age seven to help his single mother support four children, taking jobs such as sweeping floors, busboy, and dishwasher. At fourteen, a spontaneous airplane ride with a friend’s older brother sparked an unexpected passion for aviation. The experience was a pivotal turning point, leading him to decide he wanted to become a pilot and ultimately redirecting his entire career trajectory.

My name is Steve Varsano. I was born in New York in the Bronx but moved to New Jersey, which is just outside of New York City. That's where I sort of grew up through most of my years of school. And when I was 7 years old, I started actually working, sweeping floors after school on a Friday and Saturday in a beauty salon, and became a busboy, a dishwasher. I worked my way through in restaurants to just make some money because I had a single mother who was supporting 4 kids, working 2 jobs all her life. So basically, if we wanted anything, we had to go out and make the money and pay for it ourselves. And when I was 14, one of my friends, we went over his house, and his older brother was up for a flying lesson, and he asked me if I wanted to go for a ride. And it was something that was, you know, not even in my head that it could be possible. Anyway, I went up for a ride with him. It was a little 4-seater airplane. I just fell in love. When I came back down, I just decided I wanted to be a pilot, and that was actually the moment that changed my whole career path.
