Overusing adjectives weakens your writing. "Small cute pug" wastes words since pug already implies those things, but "mangy pug" adds real detail. Pick a concrete noun that does the work, then only add adjectives when they say something new.

Look, I'm telling you, this right here is what's killing your writing. You're adding adjectives that are completely unnecessary. So if you write the small cute pug, it's wasting 2 words. A pug is already small and already cute. The reader already knows this, so it's unnecessary. Cut the adjectives. However, the mangy pug is new information. That adjective gives us new information that isn't already carried by the noun, so it earns its place. The rule here is you've got to pick a concrete noun first that basically sends as much information to the reader as possible, and then only if you need to tell the reader new relevant information, then you can add an adjective.
