YouTube short by Christina Hall (uploaded June 4, 2024) responding to a Threads post about logo design trends. Hall disagrees with the claim that designers should avoid trend-driven logos because they become dated; she argues brands—especially those seeking cultural relevance—should evolve visual identity to stay current and maintain relevance rather than keep a logo unchanged for life.

I saw this post on threads and I do not agree with it and I'm going to explain why. I'm going to paste it in after I'm done recording. But basically it says that they don't think that designing logos based on trends that are currently running if you're not familiar similar to the way fashion trends recycle or things are just popular at a certain point in time. The same is true for design styles. This person's essentially saying that they will not design a logo that includes trending brand design style because they think it's going to make a logo dated eventually. And here's where I disagree with it. And I'm going to say a couple of things that I think are going to piss a lot of people off. I don't think a logo should just sit there and stay the same for the rest of its life. Is it possible for a logo to do that and still maintain recognition, relevance, etc. Of course. But especially given the type of brand you're trying to have, maintaining relevancy is still really important. And I think you maintain relevancy by keeping up with design style, especially if you're one of those brands that wants to maintain being on the cusp of popularity, pop culture trends, etc. I think designers think when shitting on trends that they think it makes them seem like a higher level designer, when really to me, it makes them.
