A short YouTube clip by brand/web designer Christina Hall examining and criticizing the branding and logo of Emma Lee’s empanada company (the business Emma sells empanadas through). The presenter explains she researched the company online, intends to screen-share the logo, and flags that the logo uses a free, recognizable typeface and lacks distinctiveness for a business brand.
This whole Emma and Banada thing has honestly made me go on a deep dive. No, because this video actually made me go on my own deep dive. Because I'm a brand and web designer. I was really curious about what the online presence was for the Emma Lee company. That is the company that she sells her empanadas through. I was very curious about her brand and website, but more specifically her branding. Before I reveal this logo, if you are a brand designer, you are going to know immediately what is wrong with this. But if you are not, stick around because I'm going to go on my computer and show you exactly why this is such a bad logo. Without further ado.
Yeah, I know now a lot of people think when I say something's a bad logo that I mean based on my personal taste as a graphic designer, that I just think it looks bad. That is not what makes a bad logo, although it's a heavy contributor. When you're a business owner, you want your branding to help you stand out and be non repeatable and that is why this logo is so bad. When you're a designer for as long as I have, sometimes you can look at typefaces and immediately recognize what they are.
Case in point, the typeface that Emma's logo is entirely made up of is a free.
