Christina Hall (speaker) argues that many small-business owners build personal brands based on their own tastes (e.g., favorite colors, symbols) rather than on what will communicate value to customers. She emphasizes that a brand should signal what the business provides and what customers need to see to buy, not merely reflect the owner’s personal preferences.

Let me paint a picture for you. You have a business. You went on canva, you made your own logo. You probably did something like I love butterflies so I'm gonna put a butterfly in my logo because that just represents me. I love purple so my logo and brand colors are gonna have purple in them because that's just so me. You're doing it all wrong. Your business is not about you. I don't care if your whole business is you, it's you providing a service. It's still not about you. Your brand should not just be a reflection. Your brand needs to reflect back to your customers what you provide, who you are and what they need to see in order to buy into whatever it is you're offering them. You don't do that by making a brand visual logos, et cetera just the way that you like them, just the way that you feel is so you. Your brand is not you even when you are.
