My kuleana, or my responsibility, is really to free people through my art. I really wanted to just anchor myself in ancestral truth and responsibility. So at my best, yeah, the great sound for folks. I preserve histories and I free folks up.
This June on The Piano Pod, I sit down with pianist, composer, educator, and self-described "sound liberator," Joe Williams. In a conversation on Black history, belonging, education, and legacy, Joe reflects on what it means to use music as a force for liberation.
It's understanding that the spaces I occupy, maybe there's not many folks who have similar background as me, and they're not used to seeing someone like me being free in public. Just me coming up to a space even before I play a note, there's a set of preconceived notions. And yeah, I kind of find a lot of joy in subverting those and just, you know, showing up with my tats and showing up with whatever I feel like wearing and just throwing down a Scarlatti Sonata.
It's a way of being.
It's like a whole philosophical construct, and we celebrate progress as a community by underlining moments of Black excellence and by remembering Black history. And I think that's really important, and that concept alone can transform the entire field of classical music because, yeah, I don't know, Black history is not just for February, right? So there's just lots of ways that we can remember through our art. All about remembering and honoring and bringing folks into the space Sound Liberation!
