I think in the music world, we're used to talking about lineage when it comes to pedagogy, right? Like, "Oh, I'm the grandson of Rachmaninoff because my teacher's teacher studied with Rachmaninoff," right? And in the field of music education, we're also used to naming certain pedagogies after pioneers, right? Like the Kodaly method. So I thought to myself, like, "Wow, what is the equivalent within the Black community?" Because in the field of music education, I can't really think of any standard methods attributed to Black music educators. What if receiving this award means that now I have to think about what is the Patrice method? Or what if after being mentored by Francis Walker, the pioneering pianist, what if, what if I now teach in the Francis method? Whoa, that's going to take a lot of work to institutionalize, right? And it's going to take a lot of me just like talking about it endlessly to everyone I see. So that's what I mean by responsibility, because there is a way for figures to live on historically, but it takes constant effort and advocacy to make sure that happens, right? And the ancestral part really is the lineage that I was talking about, just being able to trace almost biblically being able to trace where you're coming from and where your ideas are coming from.
