You know, the idea behind a lot of spirituals is this connection that enslaved African Americans felt to the narratives of the biblical stories. And arising from oppression, working through barriers, sometimes it's being in the mire of the everyday oppression and looking towards your heavenly home. There are all sorts of narratives in the Bible that these spirituals come from. And enslaved African Americans connected with. So in the case of Joshua fought the Battle of Jericho, this idea of there's this giant, seemingly impenetrable empire fortress and that the people could overcome that and bring that down and literally bring down these walls is such a pictorial image. And so that sort of, in the context of that spiritual and those lyrics, Joshua fought the Battle of Jericho and the walls came tumbling down. You know, where it comes from.
