Architecture and Urban Sketching : House from Beetlejuice

In this informal livestream, Jason Nicholas shares a brief, five‑minute sketch of the iconic Beetlejuice house, a Victorian Gothic structure from Tim Burton’s film. He explains his love for Burton’s set design, outlines the materials (Sharpie, cold‑press watercolor paper) and his loose, quick drawing approach, and describes how sketching helps clear his mind for better sleep. Throughout the session, Jason interacts with chat, thanking new subscribers, acknowledging regular viewers, and mentioning his teaching duties and a recent SteelStacks video. He promises to revisit the house with more detailed sketches, especially around Halloween, and encourages viewers to use creativity for positivity.

Hey, hope you're having an awesome Sunday evening. It's September 8th. 9:53 PM here in awesome New Jersey. I hope you're doing well. I am on really, really briefly right now, um, before I head to bed. I want to just do a quick sketch or start a sketch, um, just— I saw Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice yesterday. I actually really, really, really enjoyed it. It was a good movie. I could do a whole separate review about the movie. But for now, let's just sketch. Um, I love— I— one of the things I love about Tim Burton movies are the, uh, is the design of the world, the sets. Um, and the Beetlejuice house is definitely no exception. So let me just throw down something quick here. Um, like I said, I'm gonna do a quick, like, 5-minute sketch. And we'll see how far we get. But hope you're doing well. Feel free to leave comments and questions in the chat, and I will definitely check them out later. So yeah, let's just start sketching. Let's see, uh, you will sketch like this. So I have a Sharpie, I have my cold press watercolor paper. We're just going to kind of go for it here. Again, this is going to be very, very quick and loose tonight. I just wanted to do some kind of sketching before I went to bed. Um, sometimes, sometimes I have too much stuff on my brain— good stuff, but so much stuff that sometimes it's hard for me to fall asleep. And sketching is just one way for me to just to kind of get my brain in a kind of a clear state of being. It's for a better night's sleep. So I really, really enjoyed Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice. I thought it was a Just a fun, fun movie, especially if you like the first one, which I love. And I'm not going to give anything away about it. It just, uh, it was just a good time. So they actually recreated and rebuilt this house for the movie, which was, uh, which is interesting. Let's see, we have a— this is a porch happening here. There's some steps coming down. I'll definitely be sketching this again. Just like I said before, I just want to throw something down on paper before I go to bed here. Just kind of get it out of my head. I always like to say, get it out of your head and onto paper, you know, whether it's, uh, sketching or writing something or scribbling. I don't know, I don't know about you, but my brain, I can't hold too much stuff in it these days, so I always try to write things down, get things out. I have a lot of Post-it notes I use my Lockbee field journal a lot for sketching, getting things on paper, journaling as well. I also want to give a shout out to all the new, um, subscribers that have joined recently. So thank you guys so much, I appreciate that. And a shout out to all of my favorite Facebook Inklings and YouTuber— YouTube subscribers out there. Thank you guys so much for always supporting what I'm doing, and it's just so much fun to be here sketching and having you guys along for the journey. And hopefully I'm making a positive difference somehow. In your world, because that is why I love doing this. We have steps coming down here as well. Yeah, we'll just show something like this for now. That's cool, that's cool. Just show the ground kind of doing something like this. Boom. Alright, cool. I think that's a good start. So let me check the comments before I head out, see if anybody is out there in streaming world. I had the comment window off, but I hope you're watching out there. Let me turn the comments on and check in with you guys. All right, there you go. Boom! Hey D-Ray, great to see you, hope all is well. Tim Berghiser, Tim, great to see you also, man, hope all is well. And Karen, great to see you. I love always seeing you guys out there. This is so fun. You guys are awesome. Hope you all had a good weekend, and I really hope you all have an amazing week that's coming up. I haven't been streaming live too often at night because I've been so, uh, last week I was getting busy for back to school, and then Thursday and Friday were our first 2 days back with students. So, uh, yeah, I've been exhausted in a good way, in a good way. But yes, I have not been, uh— you probably can hear it in my voice, I'm pretty, pretty tired. Not complaining, but hopefully I'll see you guys more on these live streams. Let me see, what else do I want to add on here before I head out? Anything? All right, cool. All right, so again, so this is, um, the sketch is loosely inspired, inspired by the, uh, the Beetlejuice house. A cool piece of, I guess I would call it Victorian Gothic style. Let's just show some before— I think the last thing I'm gonna do tonight is just show some, uh, let's just show some of the siding on the house here, give a little more detail. It's not bad for a quick sketch of it. I like it. I'm sure I'll come back to and add some more shadows and maybe some hatch lines like this to give it some depth to it. Alright. Let's see. All right, I think that's going to be a good stopping point on this for now. I think I'd said that already, but you, you know me, I like to keep sketching and I'll keep going and going and going and going. Um, hey, you guys are awesome. Paula Loves Art, I like this structure. Hey, thanks, Paula Loves Art. Yeah, if you're just joining, this is a This isn't— this is inspired by the Beetlejuice house. That is what this sketch is based on here. Uh, you will see me sketch this again, I'm sure, and a few more times, especially as we get closer to Halloween. I'll, I'll keep bringing new life to this house with some different sketches and versions of it. Tonight I just want to get something quick on paper. Out of my head because it's going to help me sleep better. All right guys, you are awesome. So, um, just want to thank you all for watching tonight. Just kind of popped on here quickly. Um, I do appreciate— I also want to give a shout out to, um, to you guys for liking and sharing my SteelStacks video, the, um, the full-length cut, which is about 15 minutes long. I've been getting some really, really awesome feedback on that video. So yeah, I feel like someone actually said in the comments they were— they took notes on the video, which— that is so cool. I love that I'm, I'm able to share and put stuff out there and that you guys are getting something out of it in a positive way. So that is super, super cool, and thank you for that. I appreciate that. All right, D-Ray, great seeing you in the chat. And Tim and Karen, great seeing you. Paula, hello from Missouri! That is so cool. I have never been to Missouri. Um, I would love to get out there. That is so cool. I love to know where people are watching from. Yes, D-Ray, thank you for putting that in the chat. The Beetlejuice house, that is what this was inspired by. Oh, no worries, Paul said. I didn't read the whole title of the stream. That is so cool. No worries, it's all good. All right guys, this young chap has to, uh, go to bed. I have to get up and do some teaching tomorrow, which is pretty awesome. It's, uh, something I love, love doing. Thank you guys again. Take care, have a great, great night. Remember, you too can sketch architecture one line at a time. Use your creativity for positivity, no matter how you can do it. Just put good out there, guys. We need more niceness and goodness out there. I appreciate y'all. Take care, have a great, great night. Peace. Live creatively. See you soon.
