Taking a quick walk. Will it rain?

Jason Nicholas walks through a rainy park, spotting beavers, frogs, and birds while reflecting on calm versus turbulent water as a metaphor for life. He also shares how teaching a sketching workshop at Brooklyn's Stationery Fest pushed him out of his comfort zone.

August 2nd or 3rd, I'm losing count, but it doesn't matter. Hope you're having a great day. I'm out for a quick walk here. So look at this guy over here, and then look at this guy over here. So Is it gonna rain? I don't know, but I need exercise. So join me for a minute or two as I just take a walk out here. Nothing in particular planned, no topics of conversation planned. We'll just kind of riff a little bit. I am holding the phone in my hand, not a gimbal, so it will be shaky, but that's okay. So we've been getting tons of rain here. Uh, it's been crazy. You can see the puddles. But I'm really curious. We're gonna head towards a— I don't know if you call it a waterfall or not. We'll call it a waterfall. And, uh, we'll see how rapid, how quick it's running with all the rain we've had. For all of you that have been following my bunny spotting adventures, um, I don't, I don't think we'll see any here. I've, I have not seen any bunnies in this park. Isn't that strange? But we'll keep our eyes open. I have seen snakes in these rocks many times. So I was at Stationery Fest on Friday and Saturday in Brooklyn, Industry City. It was quite an interesting event. It was huge, uh, it was awesome. And I got to teach a workshop on Saturday about loose style sketching. And that was a lot of fun. So I loved, loved doing this. The workshop had some really awesome people in there, and, uh, it's just fun to kind of share my mindset a little bit and just to encourage and inspire some peeps. All right, we're gonna walk down. This is what I'm calling the waterfall. I love the sound here, so I'm just gonna kind of be quiet. Let you guys enjoy the sound. Isn't that peaceful? I love the sound of water, running water. It's just so— I don't know, just something so soothing about it. Um, so let's riff. Here's, here's what I was thinking as I was watching that water. Uh, it's really interesting here, you know, on one side of the bridge, that side of the bridge, the water is kind of Peaceful, calm, right? There's a little breeze, you might see some ripples, but generally speaking, it's kind of at a, a peace, a certain level, right? On the other side of the bridge, boom, the water is totally different. It's rushing, it's energetic, it's loud. It's, it's got a mission, right? It's headed somewhere. It's on a journey. So this is kind of like life. Yeah, I'm comparing this to life. I know I'm getting deep here, getting deep. You know, sometimes in life, on one side of the bridge, we have one journey, one state of being, one mission, one goal. And then the other side of the bridge, different challenges, different goals, headings, meanings. Um, it's really interesting to think about. I guess depending on which side of the bridge you're on is how you can feel, right? So I'm getting way too deep here, and I don't know if it's making sense, But I'm riffing and I'm just talking off the cuff, and that's just part of simply being human. Um, here you can see the side a little bit better now. Is that a snake? We got to look, we got to look down here for snakes. They like to come out in the sun, lay on these rocks. But anyway, I guess what I was saying about the bridge is, um, we have a choice, right? We can stay on one side of the bridge, we can cross over to the other side of the bridge, and it's all about where we're headed and where we want to go and what we want to be. Sometimes we have to put intentions and thoughts and just kind of think about that, you know, lay out a plan or map something out. Just to give yourself a direction to head in. All right, that was my deep part of the conversation. So I'm looking down here, I don't see any snakes, not that I really want to. Let's see. Oh, there's some cool little birds down there. They look like some kind of piper birds. If I have any birdies, birdies out there, any bird watchers, let me know. Let's just scan these rocks here. I love coming here and just walking around. Um, you could loop around that way, make a full circle. It's about a mile walk. I'm not going to go through there, it's kind of overgrown, ticks, blah blah blah. So we'll head back the other way. If you have any questions or comments, let me know. Anyway, so I was sketching in Brooklyn on Saturday Thursday and Friday at Stationery Fest, did a cool workshop. And, um, Brooklyn is so different than here. Two very different vibes. But I like it. I like each vibe. For me, each one has its own benefits and its own challenges. Um, it was cool for me to go to this Stationary fest for 2 days. Oh, there's a frog. I think we lost it. Do you see the frog? But it was good to get away, and sometimes you have to challenge yourself, push yourself to grow in different ways on different levels. So me going to this place I had never been to before and going by myself and not knowing anybody at this festival that had lots and lots of people. It was really interesting. It was such a good experience, and it forced me to grow a little bit and just gain a little more confidence, something I have lacked a lot in my life. Cricket! Oh wow, just— or grasshopper. So sometimes we just have to challenge ourselves and step out of our comfort zones to grow in different ways. We'll get a look at the waterfall from up here. It's kind of— if you're just joining me, this is, um, sometimes I like to hike and mic and just riff to talk about things, random things, nothing planned. Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it doesn't. It's all good. So here's kind of a view of the falls from up here. Don't want to drop my phone. So amazing. I could sit here all day. I could do some sketching. The humidity is out of control though, so I'm just stopping here on my way back from doing a little measuring this morning. On a project I'm working on. Thought it'd be cool to get out and just take a little walk. Um, we're going to head towards— I love these. I think it's called a butterfly bush. They used to have tons and tons growing in here. I don't know what happened to them all, but here are some. I just love these butterfly bushes. They're so beautiful. I love the fact that they attract butterflies. Be cool if we saw some now, although there are some bees flying around. It's a good screenshot. And then we'll kind of look back. There's that bridge and waterfall. So peaceful here. So my title said, is it going to rain or not rain? I think we might have some rain clouds up there. So we'll start walking back. I didn't bring my umbrella, but it's okay if I get wet. I don't care, it's just water. If you like these kind of informal hike and mic sessions— mic as in microphone— where I just kind of talk, ramble a little bit, or we're quiet, listen to nature. Hit that thumbs up, subscribe. If you like the world of sketching or architecture, check me out as well, subscribe. Um, I love doing urban sketching, architectural sketching. That's kind of my, um, a hobby/passion of mine, so Definitely a lot of that here on the Inkspired Life. We're gonna walk down to the water and see if we see any fish. I gotta get across. Well, let's see. Oh, I gotta stay dry. That's a big puddle. Yeah, we've been hammered with rain here. Which I guess is a good thing. We need it, nature needs it. Let's walk down to the water here, maybe we'll see some fish. All right, let's see. Oh, I do, I see some. Let me know in the chat what Do you like to go outside? Do you like to walk around? Do you get out in nature? What are some of your favorite, like, animals or creatures to see? Do you like just chilling out, looking at the water or the sky? Let me know. Always curious. I see fish swimming. Look. And then we'll head, uh, there on our way out. Lots of times I'll see frogs over there, so we'll head that way. So if you want to stick around for another minute or two, feel free. It'll be a bouncy walk. Because I am not using a gimbal, just holding the phone in my hand. So they do swim meets here. You can see the docks and all the flags over there. It's quiet here today. All right, we're gonna see if we're gonna go frog spotting, see what we see. Uh, although last time, last time when we went frog spotting over there, we actually, um Didn't see any frogs, but we saw a snake, and I'm glad we had our pup with us because she let us know about the snake. Otherwise I would have stepped on it. Yeah, it's getting darker out. There are also beavers here in this area. See if I can find any beaver evidence. Alright, we're gonna walk down, see if we find any frogs. Alright, down we go. Usually I see them right along the shoreline here. Alright, let's see. I don't see any yet. Dang, no, no frogs, no frogs. I am not very hoppy, but we got this cool, um, like tiger lily thing. All right, no frogs. Sorry, guys. All right, I think with that we're going to wrap this quick walk today. Get a nice view looking towards that bridge. Awesome. Well, if you like this quick walk, like to see more, give me a thumbs up, subscribe to The Inkspired Life. And just give one more glance in here. Sometimes I see turtles also. Maybe this stormy weather has, has these creatures off schedule, or they're on the stormy schedule. So isn't it cool how some, how animals can like detect storms? Like better than we can. We have all this tech, all this equipment, and like my dog knows when a storm is coming way before I do. If you think about it, it's kind of a cool, cool thing. All right, until we meet again, sketch boldly, live creatively, and embrace imperfection.
