Barn There, Sketch That

Jason Nicholas sketches a wonky barn with Sharpie, ink, watercolor, and colored pencils while chatting with viewers. He shares tips on brush feel, letting colors bleed and puddle, and shaking out tension in your hands. His virtual workshop on October 26th teaches the same wonky barn technique with any media.

Hello, how are you guys doing? It's, um, October 21st, Monday, 7-something PM. 7:46 PM. Hope you're having a great day today. I'm on for a few minutes. I'm sketching barns. Loving, loving, loving sketching barns. It's so fun. Just love the characteristics and the wonkiness of barns. Here's, here's my last, uh, few sketches from the past few days. So these are all mixed media with Sharpie watercolor. There's some colored pencil on here and some ink as well. I really, I really like the way these are turning out. They're a lot of fun. Um, some really cool colors. I love, I love what happened down here with these, um, the way the colors just kind of spread out. All right, so let's do a quick little sketch tonight. And, um, I only have 2 more days left, um, for you if you want to sign up and join my upcoming virtual workshop on October 26th, where we will be sketching wonky barns. I'm using ink watercolor, mixed media, colored pencils. You can pretty much use anything you want, um, or you can, you know, you can keep it simple and stick with a pen or pencil. It's all good. The idea is just to get together with a group of creatives and pick my brain a little bit about how, um, how I approach sketching kind of these wonky, kind of fun structures. I think it'll be a good time. And hopefully that made sense. I feel like I'm, I'm in ramble, ramble mode, um, which is okay. I've been so, so tired, so rambling's good. It means I have some energy going on right now, so we're going to take advantage of it. I think sketching can trigger, trigger my energetic state and just kind of take me from exhaustion to creative energy. Alright, cool. So this is just a quick wonky barn. Maybe we'll throw some color on it tonight and, um, Just starting with the Sharpie, just outlining some general shapes here. That way I can come back in and throw ink and watercolor on top of it. All right, it's looking kind of cool, I think, to start with for now. Hey, D-Ray's in the house! D-Ray, hope all is well. It's so awesome to see you. Always great seeing you on the streams. Hope all's going well for you. All right, cool. So, um, let's throw down. Let me zoom in, I guess. Zoom, zoom, zoom. Move that. Let me see, I gotta move this water. I have a cup of coffee. Hey, look who's joining us tonight! You guys remember Retro? I don't want to— it's kind of upside down, but I have my Retro mug here, drinking some decaf coffee. Sometimes I'm just in the mood for a cup of decaf coffee at night. Ah, that's good. Smells good too. Wait, I could show you Retro this way. There you go, there's Retro. Retro needs to make a comeback with some more, um, sketches. Cool. All right, let's— you know, let's throw some color down on this. Why not? Retro break. We all, we all need a retro break, that's for sure. All right. What are we going to dig into? Let's, um, I'm going to grab some ink over here. Let's throw down some. We're going to go with some Rusted Rivet. I've used this color before, but let's try it again. And I am not pre-planning the colors. We're just going to throw stuff down, have fun. It is 7:53. I'm going to We'll try to wrap up at 8 o'clock. And let me just prop this up. I always like to put my paper at an angle when I'm adding color or ink onto it. Let everything kind of puddle up, drizzle down, and pool up at the bottom here. See what it does. One thing I like to do is, um, instead of brushing the ink on, or even I do even with watercolor, I'll just kind of tap. So you can see I'm just tapping down here, letting— just letting it run down the page. It's just an aesthetic I like. So I love it. It's kind of— if you follow this, it's, it's just trailing down here, and we'll try to let it stay that way, and we'll see what happens. No promises, I might touch it here and there, add some other color to it, but it's a really cool start. Fall's here, so I want to break out some fall colors. So I have this cool orangey color, it's called Sunburst, so I'm going to throw down some Sunburst ink. Oh no, brush down, brush down. All right, that is going to be hard to retrieve. So my brush just fell like on the side of my drawing station here, but have no fear, I have more brushes in here. We'll go with this one. What is this one? This is a Cotman brush here. I have I think I used it barely once. Number 8. Well, let's see what it does. I'm so used to using that bamboo brush that, um, this will be interesting. So it already has a different feel to me. It's definitely— it's very soft. It's kind of like a little I feel like the brush is kind of just like nudging the paper here, a nice little soft nudge with that brush. It's kind of strange, the handle's smaller here, so I feel like I need to grip it and control it, be in control more. Whereas the bamboo brush is kind of— it's wider and it's just the same shape all the way up, and I feel looser with it. This, I feel like I'm gripping more like a like a pen or pencil. So I'm intentionally going to loosen up my hand here and just shake it a little bit, and I want to keep kind of the loose touch I like doing and not, not treat this like a pen or pencil I'm holding. There you go, it's kind of cool. So I'm dipping— I'm still using Dirty Water, which is kind of a greenish tint. There looks like there's some like neon green stuff in there, um, and you can see that's actually— let's use that color. You can see that yellowish color. That's— this is just what is coming out of here. That's the color from the Dirty Water. It's kind of interesting. Actually, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to throw some of that yellow in here, mix these up a little bit together. All right, cool. So we have a couple of different colors on there. Let's throw down— I'm going to dip into— I have some turquoise watercolor in here, so I'm going to grab some of that. Let me just wipe off my brush here. Yeah, this paintbrush feels so different than the one I just dropped. I'm really trying to figure out how to hold it the best way for me. It's weird, we get used to our, you know, our paintbrushes, our pens, our pencils, and the way they feel and our grip. And then when we change, it just feels so weird. And again, this is, uh, turquoise I'm throwing down. I'm gonna put on pretty thick here and kind of touch it here. Cool, that might be enough color for the first round here until it dries up. All right, so let's, let's go and grab, um Red Pilot Precise Pen, and let's throw some red ink on here. Hey, D-Ray! D-Ray's over on the YouTube. Looks good, thank you. Thanks for being on YouTube, I appreciate that. If anybody else is on YouTube, that would be awesome if you, uh, if you give me that— hit that thumbs up button, which believe it or not will share it out to some other people. Um, I would appreciate that, would be so cool. I think I'm almost at 8— I think we're almost at 900 subscribers on YouTube. That's fun. My goal is to hit 1,000 before the end of this month. It's my birthday month, and I thought it'd be really cool to hit 1,000 subscribers for my birthday month. So we're close. What the heck is— I looked at it earlier. Oh man, was it 8— I don't remember. It's close to 900, I think. It was like 884 or something like that. It's just a fun goal for me. It's about not the number of viewers, really. It's about the quality of the viewer, the quality of the person watching. It's kind of how I view, um, kind of how I view my friends in life. I'm not a person Let's talk about like Facebook. Like, I'm not a person that has to have 1,000 friends on Facebook. I would honestly rather have 3, 4, or 5 really amazing friends. Well, maybe not on Facebook, but in real life. What am I even talking about? What is the man talking about? He's trying to sketch a barn and talk. So I threw this red ink on here. I'm— one of the things I've been trying to do lately in my sketches— I'm going to change this song. There we go. Uh, one of the things I've been trying to do lately in my sketches is I've been trying to find a place where I can add a continuous line. So in this case, I have the red, it just kind of continues down like this, and I I think for me it visually helps to tie some things together. Um, just something I've been trying to incorporate, just a little stylistic type thing. So you— if you watch my sketches, you might notice me doing that. Not 100% of the time, but I'm doing it more and more. All right, let's add some hatch lines on here, and then we'll go Let this one dry and we'll revisit it, uh, mañana. I am lying. I think I'm actually— you know what, I want to break out some blue. And instead of using blue watercolor, I have a— right here I have a blue Varsity pen. So we're just going to throw this down. Hey Jethro Bodine, love the cupola and weather vane. Great to see you, hope all's well. Thank you so much. Yeah, I appreciate that. Um, thank you for all the nice comments and feedback you always leave on, on Facebook. I really appreciate it so much. So we're going to throw down some blue to create a depth, some depth and shadows with this ink pen. I'm going to throw some ink and then maybe we'll just bleed it, bleed it with some water. And again, I am just being playful here, throwing stuff down. I kind of think my Preppy Pen has lost some of its zest. Maybe I might need more ink. I'm just being careful where I rest my palm because we have some wet areas, and I'm already— I'm already wearing some right there. It's not art unless— what, guys? It's not art unless you wear it, and I'm wearing it right there. D-Ray says, uh, I am unfamiliar with YouTube, that's why I stay on the other, but I lost contact. Oh, I wonder if I have some wonky Facebook contacts. No worries, you're doing great over there on YouTube. You got this, you got this YouTube thing, you're doing a great job. I appreciate you watching. All right, so I'm just scribbling some shadows. Did he say scribbling? I did say scribbling. If you can scribble, you can sketch architecture. I truly believe that. This is fun. I haven't sketched with a Varsity pen in a while. Very cool. Um, let's zoom in. I love the way this is drying. Let me show you guys. I'm gonna do some close-ups here. Yeah, right? I love, I love how this is drying. The colors here are really cool. I love the colors in the roof here, the way it's drying. Pretty awesome. I'm just bleeding some of this. Let me zoom out so you can see what I'm doing. I'm just bleeding some of that blue. So this, um, Violet— Violet— this Varsity— oh my gosh, Pilot Varsity pen bleeds pretty well. Yikes. What is the man saying? What is that crazy man saying? Oh yeah, I love the way this is bleeding right here. Appreciate you and your scribbling. Thank you, I appreciate you. All right, let's see if it's dry enough. I can sketch on some— do some barn boards on here. Let's do some vertical Notice I'm kind of wiggling my pen, getting wiggly lines here. I guess marker— I guess, I guess the Sharpie is technically a marker. We're going to switch because Sharpies don't like to write on wet or damp areas. Um, I have a Sharpie gel pen that actually will, so let's use the gel pen. There you go, you can see how it doesn't mind the wet areas at all. I'm just rotating this so I don't get— put my palm in any of the wet areas. I'm just loosening my hand up a little bit. Don't be afraid to shake it out a little bit sometimes if you feel like your hand is stressing or you're grabbing your pen or brush too tight. Shake it out. It'll help to loosen you up a little. So there we go, got some roof going on there. And we'll do this side here, the coupe. This is a cupola, so on the cupola we'll do this. It's kind of curved. I imagine it being maybe a curved metal roof up here. You can kind of see how it's looking. And I'm adding more hatch lines underneath this roof overhang just to give it a little more kind of an appearance of some depth on that. And let's show, um, a stone foundation. Let me see if I can sketch out the Sharpie. I'm switching back to the marker rather than the gel pen. Um, I feel like I have more control of the line weight or the darkness with the marker, and I don't want these lines to be too, too dark here. The gel pen would make them a little too dark for me. So it's sometimes it's about feel. What do you feel more comfortable with? What tool, right? We have our favorites, and I feel like I have a much more control with a Sharpie marker um, than with that gel pen. This is my favorite way to show stone, almost continuous line here. So we have a nice kind of stone base happening. Cool. All right, this might be at a good stopping point for today, the man says as he keeps going here. There we go. Yes, might be at a good stopping point for now so I can let it dry, come back, and just add some more final details on it. I like the way it's looking. I like the colors. It's drying pretty nicely. Let me zoom in so you can see it close up. D-Ray says shake all out your hands and give them a chance to relax. That's right. He said, yeah, it's exactly right. Yeah, shake your hands out, stretch them. All right, let's zoom in and see how some of this is drying. Okay, let's bring this up here to the camera. You can get a good sense of how this is drying. And here you can also see that stone a little closer. I'll zoom out a little. And there you go, you can see the whole thing. All right guys, I think that's it for tonight on this one. Thank you so much for watching. Um, D-Ray, it was great seeing you live here. Thank you for all your comments in the chat, I appreciate that. Uh, Jethro was also watching live, I appreciate that as well. You guys are awesome. If you're watching the replay, hope you're enjoying this. Feel free to leave me comments, some likes, thumbs up, smiley faces, all that cool stuff. And, um, well, that's if you liked it, of course. Um, sweet dreams, thank you so much. You too. Guys, you're amazing. I appreciate y'all so, so much. Um, last day to sign up for my Sketching Wonky Barns workshop is on Wednesday the 23rd, so, um, the link is on the screen. It is still open, and I think I have 8 more spots available. So it's really cool. I think it's gonna be a lot of fun. I think it's gonna be the biggest workshop I've had so far. I think we're up to 12 people, which is awesome. I love, love, love that, and I'm really thankful for everybody that signed up so far. Really, really, some really thank you so much. All right guys, have a great, great day. Keep using your creativity for positivity, and remember, if you can sketch lines, you can sketch architecture. Take care, we'll see you guys real soon. Peace and live creatively. This has been Jason with The Inkspired Life. I'm waving with the wrong hand. I gotta wave with my left hand because I need my right hand to find the finish button and click on it. I'll get the hang of this thing in the next century, I'm sure. Good night, guys. Take care.
