FRIDAY NIGHT SKETCH AND CHILL

Architect and CAD teacher Jason Nicholas sketches live on a Friday night, drawing his favorite subject: the Statue of Liberty torch. He uses Sharpies to create loose, wonky drawings focused on feeling over realism, and hands out torch sketches to students and strangers.

Hey, happy Friday night. Jason Nicholas Nicholas here from the Inkspire Life. Hope you're doing awesome. Time is 9:42 PM here in New Jersey. I am popping on late, but I, I feel like I feel like sketching before I go to sleep. I am pretty, pretty tired, but do you ever get to a state of like where you're overtired? I am, I am overtired. So I thought sketching would, uh, just change my state of mind a little bit, put me, uh, in more into a, um, you know, sleepy mode state. And if I ramble and I repeat myself, bear with me. Like I said, my brain's tired. It's Been a real crazy week. Good week, but crazy week. But enough about me. Hope you're doing great. Um, hope you had an awesome week and you're having a great day, and hope you have some fun weekend plans coming up. Cool. So if you don't know who I am, uh, my name is Jason Nicholas Nicholas. I am an architect. I'm a high school teacher where I teach architecture and CAD design, or almost like a product design class where we're using computer modeling. I love, love, love what I do. It's so fun and I'm so blessed to do that. I love sketching, I love architecture, and I love urban sketching. So I'll go into New York City, I'll do a lot of sketching, and I think tonight I'm gonna just practice. I like— one of my favorite things to sketch is the Statue of Liberty torch. I sketch them and I hand them out. I actually gave one out today to somebody in school. Um, given out to people in New York City in just random places. So it's a fun sketch for me to do, and it's never the same sketch twice, which is awesome. So I got some— I have music playing. I'm just gonna sketch and have some fun. If you're watching live, let me know where you're watching from. I'll check the questions in the comments, all that fun jazz. Let's see, I'm gonna grab a Sharpie that works. It's so bizarre lately, if you— I feel like whenever I'm grabbing a Sharpie, they're not working, and I don't know what's up with that. I'm a huge Sharpie fan. I usually use Sharpies, I would say 98, 97% of the time, to start my sketches with. Let's see if this one works. So my sketching style is, is very loose, very wonky. I don't sketch for realism. And I give credit to those that can do that because there's some amazing realistic artists out there. You know, I— with my artwork, my sketching, my goal is to, um, just have fun and capture a vibe with color and feeling, and I'm not trying to be realistic.
