Friday Sketching

Jason Nicholas sketches live on a Friday night, drawing a Statue of Liberty torch and talking through his process with purple marker and watercolor paper. He packs light for a 9-10 day trip, believing constraints spark creativity, and shares his philosophy on teaching design and running sketching workshops in NYC.

Hey, happy Friday night, March 27th. Hope you're doing well. Uh, join me for some sketching. So tonight, uh, I'm gonna— I want to sketch, I think, a Statue of Liberty torch since I'm going away. Um, I thought it'd be cool to have some torches with me that I can give out. Um, maybe it's like thank you notes or something. So I have a few here, so I thought maybe I'd do another one tonight just to, to add to the collection. So if you want to join me for about 20 minutes or so and we'll hang out, I'll sketch a torch, we'll chat for a little bit. Feel free to say hello in the comments. It's always great being here. I love sketching, love, um, especially sketching architecture because it just something that connects with me on a lot of different levels. And sketching is a really powerful tool in my life. I use it for creativity, brainstorming, problem-solving, changing my state of mind, and just, just overall communication. So hang out for a few here on the Inkspired Life, and let's do some sketching. We'll put some music on, and let me know How you're doing and where you're watching from. Hope all's well.
Every lesson painfully learned, all the moments that left me torn made me someone worth fighting for. I'm stumbling, I'm rising, falling, realizing I'm changing. Still fighting, still learning, still trying. No script, no No perfect version. This is simply being human. This is simply being human. I'm not here to be flawless. I'm not here to pretend. I'm here to keep moving again and again. I'm here to I keep choosing a life I can stand it, a life that's my own. I'm still becoming, I'm still becoming. I'm stumbling, I'm rising. I'm changing, still fighting, still learning, still trying. No script, no plan, no perfect version. This is simply being human. This is simply being human. The barista winked like she knew my fate, said, sit down, kid, this cup won't wait. First sip hit like holy light, warm as sunrise, sharp as night. My whole brain stood up to cheer. What in the world is she brewing here? This is the best dang cup I It's the perfect hit. I said, magic in a mug, no regrets. He took a sip and he understood. This cup turns bad days good. This is the best tank cover ever. Bold enough to fix whatever. One sip in and I'm brand new. Soul like lightning flew. Best dang cover ever made. Heaven poured in, perfectly laid in joy and flavor. This is it. Yeah, this could be it. Best dang cover ever. Bold enough to fix whatever. One sippin' and I'm brand new. Woke my soul like lightning flew. Best dang cover ever made. Heaven poured in, perfectly laid in joy and flavor. This is it. Yeah, this car's the perfect car. The perfect car. Blank stare breaking the window's horizon. Clock ticks louder than his heartbeat. Another day, another Another chain around his feet. Where did it go, the spark, the flame? Buried in the grind, the same, the same. Daily grind, daily grind, stealing pieces My mind. Daily grind, daily grind, leaving a soul behind. Ideas trapped in a paperweight prison. Fingers ache, but the page stays unwritten.
All right, so, um, yeah, I'm just working on this torch. It's kind of quick, fast, loose. I like the way it's looking, and my goal is to have— I don't know, right now I have, let's see, 1, 2, 3. So I have 3 torches. I'd like to do I don't know, maybe 3 more. So not tonight. What I'll do is, um, it'll give me something to do on the airplane. So I'll probably sketch some torches on the airplane tomorrow, and we'll see. I just, I want to have enough to maybe just give out. I think it'd be kind of fun while I'm away to do that, and we'll see how it goes. And if you're watching, let me know where you're watching from. Let's go always great to see you guys out there. Hope you're having a great day. Happy, happy Friday. Happy Friday. Let's see, um, if we're a white gel pen, this would be awesome to use. I like taking gel pens and just kind of adding some scratchy lines. I'll zoom in so we can see it closer. Zoom in a little bit. And here's kind of what I'm thinking. If I come into this area here— you know what, I'm gonna do— where's purple? Purple? Where's my purple? Here it is. It'll show up better if I do— if I try it with purple. Let's just kind of darken some of this up a little bit in here. Don't be afraid to go back over your layers and colors and add more on top and change things around. It's part of the fun. All right, I'm, I'm loving this purple marker. I've been using it a lot lately. It's really vibrant and it's really cool for what I'm about to do. Let's see, I think it's dry enough. Yeah, I just love taking a white gel pen and putting it on top of the purple. It, for me, it just looks really cool to add these kind of scratchy lines on here. I'm going to do the same thing up here, and we'll give a little bit of curve to the bottom of the torch. Let's call them contour lines just to give a little curve. And so you can kind of see the scratchy, scratchiness happen there.
Welcome to the queue of doom. The cue of doom, where patience goes to die too soon. Every step is a battle cry, every inch a test of why we put ourselves through this heavy gloom. Yeah, welcome to the queue of doom. Rain. Heads turn, whispers spin, eyes burn. Who let him in? See, So I. This is really cool paper. This is. Let me see if I get the COVID Let's grab this one. So this is. This is the paper I'm using to do my torches on.
It's All right, so now we have, uh, we're up to 4, which is awesome. Hey, he's in the house! Great to see you. I hope you— I hope, uh, you're doing well. Happy Friday. Always great, always great seeing you. Um, yeah, so which is— this is the one we just did tonight. So I think these would be cool to kind of take and give out, uh, when I'm away. And let's see, I want to— I'm going to load some more paper in here. So I'm going to— I am bringing, uh, my Lockbee folio with me. So this will be my kind of sketching, journaling, um, EDC, everyday carry, that I'm gonna have in my backpack. So I just got to go through and I gotta add some more blank sheets of paper. Um, these will be fun to knock out some more, maybe at the airport or on the airplane. And I'll put my sticker— I have a sticker I can put on the back. Actually, I'll do that right now. Yeah, hope you're doing good. Happy Friday. Let's see, I'm just looking for a sticker. Oh dang, I only have one. I might only have one left. That's okay. So I thought it'd be fun just to pop on. I know I wasn't planning on it, and then I couldn't resist coming on at least one more night because I just love, love doing this so much. So I like to put these QR codes on the back. Don't think I have any more. Nope, that is all I have for tonight, but that's okay. Let me put some blank sheets in here before I forget, and I gotta look. I might have to change these pages out. Uh, let's see. So I— this is really cool paper. This is— let me see if I get the COVID Let's see, I got a bunch of them here. Let's grab this one. So this is, this is the paper I'm using to do my torches on. It's, uh, 1264 Fabriano watercolor paper. I love the size. It is 4 inches by 8 inches, which is perfect. So that's— that is what the torches are. It's great, easy to tear out, fits in the folio perfect, which is— I didn't even plan on, but it's just a great place to keep, you know, keep the torches, uh, in here. Hey Tim, how— hey man, how are you? Long, long time no see. I hope you're doing well. It's been eons and eons since I've seen you. Pretty cool, right? Awesome. So yeah, I'm gonna put some fresh— I think maybe, uh, there's some blank pages in here. I might just put new ones in there just so I have more than enough blank sheets of paper. So I'll probably change those out. So here's what— here's what I'm taking with me. I'll do a little quick run down. I appreciate having, uh, you guys watching live. Feel free to say hello in the comments. This is awesome. All right, so I am taking my Lockbie folio. This is not blood, by the way, it's just acrylic paint. So I just have paint on there, which is perfect, right? So I have— I'm going to take a multicolor pen. This is perfect because, um more than enough colors on that. And just because I'm a little paranoid, I have some more pens in here. I think I'm going to show— throw a gel pen in here, and I want to replace it with a red. So I think I'll add those in there. Boom. Um, I can fit up to 4 of these in here if I wanted to. So right now I just have a plain sketchbook and I have like Field Notes. I love Field Notes, by the way. Shout out to them. Um, not a sponsor or anything, I just like, like their stuff. And I like to have like either a grid or a dot grid book. This is kind of my brainstorming journal. I like to do mind mapping to think about stuff, so definitely want to have that in there as well. Oh, I have this in here, I didn't even realize that. We have this. This I take into NYC. Oh, I have a really cool Grand Central Terminal sketch in here as well. That's awesome. It's a good find. St. Patrick's, blah blah blah blah blah. So I have that, and there's a pocket if I want to put stuff in there. And then Sharpie, of course, right there. And then just— I love this back pocket. Sometimes I'll literally just stick my phone in here. So I can keep my phone back there. So really, really versatile. Is it versatile or versatile? How do you say that? Um, doesn't matter because this is the Inkspired Life where we just sketch, talk creativity and positivity. Uh, you can see why I don't teach grammar or English language arts. Yeah, right. All right, cool. So that's what I'm going to take. I'm debating whether or not I'm going to take these. I don't know. I have a small backpack. I don't know how much more stuff I want to take. So this might be a minimalistic sketching experience because I don't think I'm gonna have time to do a lot of sketching anyway. So that's okay, which is kind of cool. So when you set yourself with constraints and limitations You know, as a designer, I know that helps me or forces me to think outside of the box and be even more creative with solutions. So if I know that I can't carry a lot of my sketching gear, I have to think outside of the box and think, what is it that I really want to capture and what is the least amount of tools I can use to capture it with? So, um, it's just, uh, constraints are really— we hear the word constraints, we think, oh man, this is really going to impede what we're trying to do. Yeah, it kind of does, but that impeding forces different kind of thinking, problem solving, right? And, um, I love problem solving, brainstorming, all that fun stuff. So there you go. How did I get on that tangent? Anybody know out there? And that's when the people slowly leave the stream. They're like, what is this guy talking about? And that's okay, I'm having fun. All right guys, I'm gonna wrap in like 2 minutes. Uh, feel free to, uh, ask any final questions or say hello or say whatever you want. Obviously make it polite and peaceful and Thank you, guys. You always do in the chat. There's no worries. So I'm excited to come back and start, you know, come back to this book and finish it up. You know, I still have to figure out what I'm doing with the Pepsi-Cola sign. I put a survey out and, um, I don't think anybody responded, but that's okay, that's okay. Um, so I'm just gonna go with my gut feeling. I think we were leaning towards putting it on this page last night in the chat, but my gut was saying this page. I don't know, does it really matter? Not really, it doesn't. It's not earth-changing, earth-shattering. But yeah, so we'll figure out where to put this, and then, then I just have one more sketch to do in here, and we'll have 12 to do our calendar. So how cool is that, right? Uh, Tim says, are you still doing classes and workshops? Um, yeah, so I haven't done an online workshop in a while. I think the last one I did was last spring maybe. Um, and then I put it out there, I kind of got frustrated because I tried to run a couple more and I didn't get really anybody. I had, I think, 2 people sign up and which I appreciate so much. But yeah, so it wasn't really going over well. I'm not sure what it was. To answer your question, Tim, yeah, I would love to still work, do workshops. I will still do that, still do them. I am so tired. Will still do— I can't talk, guys. I don't drink. Imagine if I did. When I'm tired, I can't talk. So anyway, workshops, yes, I would love to do more. My goal is to do in-person sketching workshop in New York City this summer. I'd like to do maybe two of them. One I want to do in— I'm thinking the Rockefeller Center area, St. Patrick's Cathedral, um, in person. And then I think I'd love to do an in-person sketching workshop in, uh, maybe Brooklyn Bridge Park, Dumbo area, somewhere there. So anybody out there listening that wants to maybe meet up with me in NYC this summer, we'll do a little sketching kind of class and workshop. It'll be a nominal fee, it'll be a few hours, and we'll hang and I'll just— we'll just create together. So yeah. Oh, awesome, thanks Tim. You want to take another Jason class? I love that. You'll tell the ladies in your watercolor class. That is so cool. Love that. I didn't know you had a watercolor class. That is awesome. Good for you, Tim. That's so cool. Love to see you, um, out there being creative. That is so fun, right? Awesome, awesome. Cool, guys. What else? I think we're— I think that might be a wrap for tonight because I want to get to bed. I have to get up kind of early-ish and finish packing. Uh, there's like 20 minutes to wrap that up, and I will not be live streaming for a week. So, um, in the meantime, feel free to watch some YouTube, go back, watch some of my replays. On YouTube or Facebook. Share them out there, guys. If you're watching these, give me— I love the thumbs up, the sharing, all that fun stuff. Just want to keep paying it forward, you know, putting, uh, put it— using my creativity for positivity in the world. It's kind of a mantra of mine. And with you guys, it's, uh, you're helping me to get this message out there more, which is really, really important, right? Um, Edie says, that was fast. Edie, if you say— if you would like, I will do one more sketch. I'm more than happy to do a sketch. Let me know in the chat, say sketch please, and I'll do— we'll do one quick sketch of something. Um, Tim says, have a great night, friend. Tim, great to see you. Tell the family I said hi. I will. You do it through KittyTini Adult School. That's awesome. If you know anybody at CCM, let me know. I am, I am trying to— I want to be an adjunct professor at CCM to teach design. Got my name on their list of names somewhere. I need to, uh, I would love to teach college level, so that's my next step up in the teaching world. So if you know anybody at CCM, let me know. I'd love to talk to them. Um, how cool would that be? Cool, right? If you guys want, you can see how I put the journal pages in here. Um, let's do it. I could do it anyway, so I'm gonna stay on. I'll do that. Maybe I'll hit another quick sketch if you guys are up for it. I might not be able to talk, but I can definitely still sketch. It is so hard packing for it. So we're pack— I'm packing for 10 days. Um, we were strongly, strongly encouraged by the tour company to pack, bring a carry-on, you know, for the overhead compartment, as well as a, you know, like a backpack or something to put under the seat in front of you. Well, putting stuff in my bag for 10 days. Well, 9 days, I guess. Um, it's a challenge, but I had this really cool— I'll show it sometime— a really cool, uh, backpack by Koto Epoxy. Koto Epoxy, um, really colorful. So I will break that out sometime and I'll show you guys, um, how it packed, how it packed out. All right, so I got some there. Let's grab a— I'm just gonna put some blank paper. I'm always paranoid with paper whenever I go places sketching, so I'd rather just start with a fresh, clean blank journal so I have more than enough pages. Hey, Gigi's in the house! Gigi, great to see you. I hope you're doing well. I love when you guys pop in. So cool. Yeah, I am up late. I couldn't, um, I was up pack— I was packing and packing and packing, and I didn't do any sketching today, so I had to come on or get through my sketching. So I figured I'd come on, say hello, and talk to you guys and riff a little bit. So we did a torch sketch, and now you're witnessing the changing of the paper. You know, like the changing of the guard, just the changing of the paper. So this Lockbie journal is really cool. Let me kind of just show you what I can do. So it has these cool elastic bands here, and you could fit like 4 notebooks, right? So they just easily slip in like this. Boom, we got one in there. Um, I like the— I like these bookmark or these page markers are pretty cool. Um, I have— I pulled out a dot grid, so I love dot grid paper for taking notes on. I'd rather use it than lined paper. So I have some dot grid here. And we'll do the same thing. We'll just kind of stick this— I'm gonna switch them because I usually kind of like the plain paper on top because I tend to use that more than the dot grid. But we'll slip the dot grid back here. I love mind mapping. Do you guys know what mind mapping is. Mind mapping is— let me see if I can pull a page up here. Here, this is a mind map. This is how I think and brainstorm. I create these kind of mind map things. They're really fun. Um, if you guys are interested, I'll do— I could do a mind mapping session sometime on a live stream. We'll go over some mind mapping and how it's a really cool kind of thinking, sketching, brainstorming, organizing tool. So I just think I need 2 in here. That should be enough. I'm sure they have paper abroad if I need to get any. Huh, maybe cool to buy a sketchbook anyway from Italy or something. That might be a goal of mine. You know, try to get like a cool sketchbook to bring home. He says, are you all set? Yeah, so I'm— I, uh, yes, CCM, County College of Morris. Exactly. Um, yeah, I'm all set for tomorrow. My flight leaves at 7 PM, Newark Airport. Uh, the flights have been on time, more or less. The— I don't know how the TSA lines are. I'm not looking. I didn't want to look. I didn't want to look yesterday. I was so frustrated with what I saw earlier in the week. So you know what? I'm just the guy that's going to go with the flow. That's all I can do. Getting— we're getting there 4 hours early and I'm thinking positive vibes and we get through and we're on the other side waiting. And if we're sitting there for 3 hours, that's cool. 2 hours is cool. Um, so positive vibes will go with the flow with, with all that, uh, craziness. Yeah, good question. Have to bring souvenirs home. Oh man, I, I know. I don't know what I'm gonna bring home. What should I bring home? If you guys were to go to Italy or Spain, what is a souvenir you would bring home? Let me know in the chat. What would you bring home? And I didn't— didn't I say I was gonna put blank paper in there? I didn't do that. Hope you guys are having fun watching me kind of pack up here and organize a little bit. GG. This is the sketch we did earlier tonight. So my idea is to give these out as thank you notes or thank you cards. Possibly to our tour director, you know, the bus driver. We have a few different bus drivers. Who else? Any local tour guides, you know, it'd be really cool just to— well, first of all, we have to tip them money, but I would think, you know, with a tip, it would be cool to hand them a little thank you sketch. G says, in my case, pens and notebook art supplies. Yeah, I was thinking— I was just thinking about maybe bringing home like a cool sketchbook. Would be awesome. All right, so I have some more blank sheets in there. That's good. Perfect. Perfecto. All right, I am also bringing one of these. Uh, let me show you this. This is my— my— this is my backpack thing. So I am bringing— where did I put it? I think I put it inside here. I'll show you.
Yeah, it's in here.
So I'm also going to bring an accordion accordion journal with me, or AKA a concertina book, which is cool. It's one of these dealios. So, um, shout out to my friend Rue. Rue is awesome. Um, he does travel journals, so I might bring this and do a little travel journaling, you know, every day, just capture a little bit of this and that on these pages. It's So that would be kind of cool. So this is, this is coming along as well. This is a great company if you guys are looking for like backpacks and bags to carry around. I love this brand. I'm just trying to find their tag on here. I don't know where the tag is on this. What the heck? I'll find it. I think the tag is wherever my green jacket is that I cannot find. By the way, my green jacket is this color green. I love this color green. I don't know where it is. The brand is Alpaca. Alpaca. They make really, really good quality backpacks and carrying cases and things. I'll put the— I just put the alpaca— albacca. I put an albacca over there. Thank you very much. I'm here all day. Hey, that's awesome! That's awesome, Tim. Appreciate that. That's so cool. Love that. Very, very cool. Love to catch up and trade some notes. That'd be awesome. Jason, Tim was— yeah, Tim. So I don't know if you guys know this, I did improv. I was in I did improv for like 7, 8 years. I was in 2 different groups. I was in one group with Mr. Tim over here. Tim is a very creative person, very funny person. So yeah, I was in an improv troupe with Tim, and then I was also in another group. So that was a lot of fun. We used to do— if you guys ever watched the TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway? We would do skits and games like Whose line is it? So it was so much, so much fun. Um, so Tim, it's so funny you said that. In school today with my students, we actually spent one of my classes, we did improv games. We did One Word Story, we did Three-Headed Monster, uh, last day before spring break. And I'm trying to— I was trying to— they're going to be doing a big, big presentation soon for a project they're working on, so I was trying to teach them some communication skills And improv, the improv games were an amazing way to do it. And I improved it. Like, I didn't even plan it. Just, we just, it just happened. Improv is a great tool. I love it so much. I learned so much from doing it. Have you asked your family about the jacket? Nobody has seen the jacket. GG. It is gone. Gone. I have no idea how I lost a whole flipping jacket. It would— if the only places I would have taken it off would have been, um, I wear it at school sometimes, so I would have taken it off at school in my classroom. It is not there. Um, obviously home I would have taken it off. It is not here. It's so sad because I wanted to bring it on the trip. Do you think there are enough people in the world that at least one of them is named Alpaca? But a bump. Love it, love it. You are funny. You are so funny. Who knew we had— who knew Edie was such a comedian out there? All right guys, I didn't see anybody ask me to do one more sketch. Maybe I missed it, so I'm up for doing a really quick 5-minute sketch if anybody wants to. If not, that's cool. I'd bring home a Carnivale mask. That's cool. Gigi wants me— Gigi would bring home cookies. Wow, you guys are so interesting. I just had a vision of someone wearing a mask trying to eat cookies. I don't know why you guys are so creative tonight. This is so fun. I'm so glad I stayed on. All right, well, I'm gonna do— since I'm talking, I'm gonna do another sketch anyway. Um, I'm wired up now. Should I do one in here? Uh, let's, let's do one of our calendar sketches. I don't know how far we'll get tonight. I don't even know what I want to sketch. Oh man, I am not prepared for this. Let's see, um, building, building, building. I need New York City building. Um, what do I want to do? What do I want to start sketching here? NYC iconic structure, building. Um, NYPL just popped into my mind. New York Public Library. IDK. So I will wrap at 11 o'clock PM, so I have 10 minutes. All right, yes for one more. Thank you, Tim. The night is young. GG's down. You guys are amazing. I appreciate you staying up with me. This is cool. Uh, do you guys have building— do you have a building suggestion for me? Let me get a drink of water. Building suggestion. RIP jacket. Yeah, it's— I'm sure you guys didn't sign up to listen to this dude complain about a jacket. Yeah, I have another jacket story. So my favorite, favorite jacket ever, um, I tore the sleeve on it. It's like, it's like half wool, half something. It's actually Italian. Um, I can't part with this jacket. I wear it all the time even though it has a big rip in the sleeve. Isn't it funny in life how we sometimes get attached to certain things, right? Think about it. What's something you're attached to that you just won't give up no matter how old or dilapidated it is? You know, for me it's that jacket. Um, also obviously some of the Sharpies I still have that don't work that I complain about. Do the cube at Aster Place. I'm Googling the cube at Astor Place. Let's Google it. Is that the cube that's like on the point and it— you can rotate it around? Let me Google it. I think, you know, I don't know if I want to do that. It's a calendar page, or maybe we'll do it on our Soho book. Karlskirche. Oh my gosh, a stunning church in Austria. How do you say that? Car— Carl— how do you guys say that word? I am so sorry. Again, this is why I do not teach language arts. All right, I'm Googling the cube. Um, obviously I think I know what it is, and I'm guessing it looks like a cube. Let me Google on my phone so I don't lose the connection. By the way, is the music okay? Is it too loud tonight? Can you hear or not hear it? Do you care or not care? Let me know. Yeah, yeah, this is what I was thinking of. Okay, I found it. We're talking about this bad boy. I can sketch this. I think it's a cube. Should we try it? Let's try it. Let's sketch it in our Soho book. Thank you for that idea, Tim. I like your idea. I have to Google it sometime. Actually, I'll just do it on this page. I'll have to Google it and, um, maybe just do a live stream and we'll take a look at it and try sketching it. The other night, I think Jen put this out there, a Japanese temple. So we kind of just improv this temple here. So I'm up for challenges. Oh, you barely hear it? Okay, is that a good thing? Let me know. I'm always— I always want to make you, the viewers, happy. So if you like the music and want it louder, let me know. If you could care less, that's cool. I have not— I have not seen this cube in person. I need my white gel pen. I have not— have you guys— have you guys been to the cube? Let me know. That pen's not working. I have not been to the Cube. I have not been to the— dang, they call it the Bean, right? I know the Bean's Chicago. They're calling it the Bean, uh, I think it's under the Jenga building. I have not seen that in person yet.
This is interesting angle.
I'm gonna change it up a smidge. Yeah, we'll do this. So this is a really good practice for like a 2-point perspective. Ding ding ding ding, 2 points further perspective. Um, I'm keeping score of— I don't know what I'm keeping score of. Why am I keeping score? Have I lost my mind? Has he got mad? Will they let him on the plane? Stay tuned, News at 11. Alright, so I kind of sketched that slow, didn't I? You know what, I'd break out some purple, create these shadows on here. By the way, um, I may have to— I have, I have Cheez-Its. I've been snacking on Cheez-Its for like 2 hours and a little bowl here. It's a part in the crunching. Yeah, Tim, I'll definitely check out that church sometime, for sure. The Vessel would be fun to sketch tonight. I love the Vessel. Vessel is definitely a challenging thing to sketch. My perspective is a little off on this, but that's okay. Let's just stick with my loose, wonky style. I gotta put some Jason looseness on this. It's a little too tight. Here's how I'm going to do it. I'm just going to go back over the lines a little bit and sketch on top. That way I can get the kind of sketchy, scratchy vibe I like on my drawings. There we go. This is my normal sketch speed here. All right, cool. All right, we got the cube. Pretty cool. So this is the cube at Aster— was it Aster Palace? Aster Place, right? Aster Place. All right, um, I do want to do one last challenge. I want to see— I want to do the vessel. I want— since, uh, Gigi put it on there, let's Vessel's really tricky to sketch. Let's do a quick, quick down-and-dirty vessel sketch. I do need to look at a picture of it. Um, I've sketched it a few times. One of these days I'll pull out the sketches, you can see them. Here we go. I've done some urban sketching at the Vessel where I've just sat there outside and literally sketched it. It was fun. I've had some, you know, conversations with people. I can't make this bigger. Conversations with people kind of stopping, asking what I'm doing. What am I doing? I have— I'm searching. I have like so many pictures I've taken. I'm so silly. I'm looking on the internet when I have my own images. Duh. I hear some of my vessel pictures. That is not a vessel. Here we are, let's catch this picture. All right, let's vessel it up. The vessel would be a cool one to put into the calendar. Actually, but I'm not in the calendar sketching mode right now, so let's just do it in this book as well. And, um, I don't know, let's use this. Is this brown going to show up on here? Let's try it. Enjoy the music and sketching. I'll be quiet for a few minutes here. All right, well, then here's a good kind of quickie sketch of the vessel. Hopefully you guys can— hopefully you can tell it's the vessel. Um, nice. The vessel looks like a pine cone. Yeah, the vessel. Yeah, here's the picture, right? It does look like the pine cone. My shape's a little off. It should really be more like kind of like this shape, so proportions are a little off. Um, the vessel is a really interesting, um, what would you call it, a living sculpture? I mean, because it's kind of a sculpture that you can climb the stairs, walk inside of it, designed by, I think, Thomas Heatherwick Studios. Um, the same architect that did the— sometimes it's known as the Barrel Building or the Lantern Building along the High Line. It's the same architect did that building. He also did the Vessel as well. Cool, right? Give me good old-fashioned Baroque architecture. The modern stuff does nothing for me, really. Dad's— I love that comment. All right, Edie, give me, uh, if you want to ever give me an example of— that would be really cool. Let me know, like to know. Hey, not bad. Yeah, thanks. It's okay, it's okay. It is, it's a little off. Uh, I was creeping. Oh, we got some creeping going on in the chat. Do we need to ban— do we need to ban Tim? Let me know. Do we need to ban him from the chat? Carl's Church, thank you very much. Carl's Church. If you want Baroque, check out— all right, I'm gonna pull up this church, guys, and this will be the last thing we look at. I'm curious enough. Carl's— where is my phone? Oh my gosh, like my phone's right here. I literally just had it. Let me Google this Carl Church, uh, here if I spell it right. KRLS Kirsch. Oh, Karls Kirsch. Karls Kirsch. I'm pulling it up, guys.
Here we go.
Oh, okay. Is this— I guess this is it, right? Is this the one? All right, you guys are putting me through the challenge today. Let's do it. Let's— I got the red pen. Let's just see if I can whip— if I can whip this thing out here. Let's do it. I have never sketched this building. I don't even know this building. Let's give it a try. Hey guys, if it's not baroque, don't fix it. If it's not baroque, don't fix it. Thank you very much. You can thank Beauty and the Beast for that. I think that is a Cogsworth quote. I think it was a Cogsworth quote. If it's not Baroque, don't fix it. You can, you can fact-check me on that one. It's got these two like columns here. These are interesting, these, um, see what kind of columns are almost like almost like obelisks. I'm not sure. Looks like it has like some kind of like spiral thing happening. Boom. Little mini— be really cool to go up in these. This tower here, it's a little tower. We got another tower thingy on the other side. Uh, symmetry. Symmetry is always interesting to sketch. Why? Because symmetry means it's balanced on the left and right, and for someone like me who likes to sketch wonky angles and things like that, sketching symmetries is really challenging with my brain. Believe it or not, my brain doesn't want the left and right to be exactly the same.
That's not—
that is no bueno. But you get the idea. Hopefully you get the idea. I'm gonna cross there. Boom, something happening here. It looks like we have, uh, some kind of steps, some kind of statue thingy here. Statue. Hello, statue. Statue 1, statue 2. We have steps. Here. Looks like a really cool building. Was this designed by Frederick Schinkel? Schinkel? I don't know, the architect's name popped into my brain. Frederick Schinkel. S-C-H-I-N-K-E-L. Frederick Schinkel. If I got the architect on this right, that is I don't even know where that came from. Frederick Schinkel. I mean, if anybody could Google the architect of this, that would be awesome to let me know. Am I capturing the vibe of this thing? Let's do some shading here. We got this dome. There's no place like dome. All right, let's do this. Boom. It's usually the very first time I sketch a building I'm not familiar with, I'll really do literally what you're seeing, just quick, down and dirty. And it's a way for my eye to kind of see what is popping out, which features capture my interest and my attention. I will have to go back in the chat. It looks like Looks interesting. All right, cool. Let's do this. Boom. Got that, that. Oh, I was not even close. Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlok. Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlok. Okay, that is quite the name. Wasn't he— wait, wasn't he one of the characters in, in the, um, what was that game? Clue. Board game Clue. Was he one of the characters in Clue? That name?
How can that be?
I just want to throw some shadows, and I'm gonna— last thing I'll do tonight, guys, is I'll throw down some white scratchy lines. I think, I think— how many times I say the last thing I'm gonna do? This is really fun though. It's really challenging. Good practice. Thank you for throwing these ideas out there. Keep me on my game. I try to bring a little bit more of kind of my— oh, what am I thinking? I love the color of the dome on this. Night Chihuahua, let's do this. I missed it. How did I miss that? There we go, now we're talking. Now we're talking. It looks like aged kind of patina copper color roof here on this dome. Awesome. All right, let's throw down some scratchy lines. Let me zoom in and then we'll wrap up. You like that vignette? Well, you know what, Timothy? Suck it up, kiddo. That's all you're getting. I'm just teasing you. I'm just going with like— I'm just going with my screen. Sheesh. You know I'm just— you know I'm teasing you, dude.
All right, boom.
Luma, Jack, Laka. Don't sass me. You're funny. Don't sass me. Don't sass me. I do. The kids in school do occasionally say I'm a bit on the sassy side. I can have a little bit of sass. That's funny. All right guys, what do you think? We had a really busy show tonight. We started with a Statue of Liberty torch sketch. Then we went to the Cube. Sounds like a— sounds like a game show on TV. The Cube, maybe. Wait, was that a movie? The Box? The Gift? The Present? Did you guys see the movie? Had Jason Bateman. I think it was called The Gift or The Present. It was— I really like it. If you like psychological thrillers Yeah, which— it was a good one. And we had to get on there. Oh, we were talking about the cube. I got from the cube to the gift. Okay, um, so we went— we got to the cube building, right? We had to uncube it a little bit, it was too cubey. And then we, we went to the cube to the vessel to where— I forget what country. What country was this in? This, the cool country Austria. I think this is Austria, right? When we write the name of this— Karl's Church. Edie, have a great night. Take care. It was great seeing you. Be well, be well. Have a great night. Thank you, I appreciate that. See you all next week. Take care. I'm gonna wrap up too. I just want to write the name of this church so I don't forget. Oh, I can't find it. It's back in the chat somewhere. Church. There it is. Karlskirche. Karl— Karlskirche. All right, cool. Something like that. Hey guys, thank you so much for joining me tonight on last session for a week or so. Um, I appreciate you all so, so much, and thanks for the interaction, suggestions, and the positive vibes. Tim, it was great seeing you. It's been a while. Hope, hope you, uh, hope you're doing well. Stay well. GG, always, always appreciate you hanging. You're awesome. Uh, Edie, thank you as well. You, you guys are awesome, and thank you for being part of, uh, what we're doing here. All right guys, until we meet again, sketch boldly, live creatively, and inspire. This is like morning TV show music. Um, until we meet again, sketch boldly, live creatively, and inspire endlessly.
