INKing out Loud

Artist Jason Nicholas sketches New York City buildings on Yupo synthetic paper, showing how watercolor and ink sit on the surface instead of soaking in. He demonstrates lifting, blotting, and layering techniques, and explains why you need a protective coat to keep the media from reactivating.

Hey Sally Ann Smith and Jennifer, how are you guys? Good to see you. I am popping on really, really quick, 10 minutes or so to— I didn't get my art time in, so I'm tired, but I want to get my time in before bed. Thanks for tuning in. I'm actually just looking for a reference image here, but I don't know where it is. So I am just gonna play around with the sketches here. Alright, cool. Hey, good to see you guys. So I'm gonna throw down some color on something I started a few days ago. It's kind of a perspective scene looking up at buildings. So let's throw down some color. This is Yupo paper, something I've been playing around with. I want to actually move this, uh, get some ink out here. Hey, Sally Ann says cool sketch. Hey, thank you so much. Yeah, so this sketch is loosely based I'm actually going to change the tunes a little bit here. This is loosely based on a photograph I took in New York City back in November. So I was just trying to find the reference picture to pull up and show you guys, but it's somewhere on my photos. I didn't save it in an easy-to-find spot, so I'm not going to pull up the reference. But it's just— it was a reference. I'm not matching the colors. It's very, very loose and wonky, which is what I want it to be. So if you're watching the other night, you may have seen me using or working on this. This is called Yupo paper. It's actually like a synthetic plastic material. It's which is really cool. It's, it's, it does not absorb the water or the ink or the watercolors. Everything lays on the surface, which I kind of like. So it's been fun to play around with this and just add layers and layers. I'm gonna pop maybe some red here. There might be— maybe we'll throw in here, maybe there's some brick happening. I hope you guys are doing well. Jennifer, I hope you're feeling, feeling better. Alright, cool. So I threw some red down. This is the side view of a building here. It's kind of— I'm sorry, it's like a perspective view. I also want to throw down— let's see. Uh, Jennifer says, like painting on glass. Yeah, this is very, very similar to painting on glass. It's just slick. I'll zoom in, you guys can see it's totally non-absorbent, and I could even just wipe areas off if I want. So it's a totally different experience than painting on paper, but it's cool. It's just an interesting way to move color around and mix colors. Jennifer, going to Cancer Treatment Centers of America Oh, Jennifer, positive thoughts and prayers your way. Thinking of you. If you guys are watching this now or even replays, just please send some positive, um, hearts or, or comments for Jennifer. Good luck. Uh, hang in there. Hang in there. Sally says, I don't think we tried that paper. Yeah, it's— I have to say, I am, I'm liking it. You do have to be patient, um, because it— things have to dry before you can add colors and layers. I guess it's kind of like watercolor painting. But I have to say, I am— I'm enjoying the experience of this and just the results that you're getting with the colors kind of mixing. It's forcing me to stay very, very loose. I mean, this is kind of abstract, but I like it. Here's the piece I did. Here's the one I finished. So I really like how this, this bridge came out. This is the same paper. So I just love the way the colors mix and dry. It's kind of, it's kind of fun. And I have my drawing board here at an angle, so So you can see water running down, it's kind of pooling up. I'll let it dry that way. I am tempted to blot this a little bit back here, just right here. So I'll pull a little bit off that edge. There we go. So part of the fun for me is just playing around with these different mediums. I'm really enjoying it. The only reason I tried this is because I won this, won this paper in a drawing on Instagram, a random drawing, and I had never heard of it, so I chose this paper They sent some out to me, and that's— so I've been just messing around with it. You do have to, once it's finished though, you— they recommend putting a clear coat over it to protect it. Because if any of this gets wet, it'll reactivate. So this watercolor and this ink will just bleed if it gets wet. So I have to buy some kind of a spray. I forget what they recommend, but just kind of treat this. It's looking cool. Yeah, I'm loving— I'm just loving the colors. I love the looseness of this. This is a marquee. This is actually— says Booth. It's of the Booth Theatre. Again, it's just my— it's a very loose interpretation of the photograph I took. You can see here's a piece on the side I was messing around with a little bit also. So I'm just taking some blue watercolor and just dabbing it here. I want to create a little bit of a shadow under there, so I just dab some blue over that orange. We'll let those mix together. Maybe under here we'll do that too. Pull some of that back a little bit. Do want to kind of mess up the perspective of this upper building. The windows should be kind of going this way. So let's see, I'm going to mix some blue and brown, get a little bit of gray going. And let me see if I can clean this up a little bit. Yeah, that's looking better. I had my perspective lines kind of going this way when the building is really going up this way. Something I noticed the other day. So I'm just using brown and blue watercolor right now here. You see my palette, just taking some brown and blue, mixing up some grays. I'm just kind of sketching these vertical lines to indicate where the windows might be. There you go. Jennifer says nice. Thank you, Jennifer, I appreciate that. Oh, runaway brush. I do have to be really careful using this because, you know, being left-handed, I'm Very easy for me to want to smudge this. I'm gonna blot some of this back a little bit in here. Actually, I'm gonna do is dry my brush and I'm gonna pull out some of this paint. See? So I'm just literally lifting this paint off. Cool. So I'm just kind of drawing the perspective of this building here. Cool. I like the way it's looking. I'm going to pop some yellow on here. I need a— I think I need a bright color somewhere in this area, so we can dip into my yellow. Paint in here. Now let's see, let's just pop some yellow maybe in here. So I'm just loading up my paintbrush here with some yellow watercolor. Zoom in so you could see that. I just felt like we need— I needed a touch of brightness on here somewhere. Mm, I think that might be it for tonight, guys. Let's just zoom out, take a look. Zoom out some more, kind of see what I have on my desk here a little bit. So you'll see how it's all kind of pooling down here in the bottom of the page— paper, I mean. Boom, boom. I like that. I'm gonna let it dry like that. And I think that's it for tonight. Next time I work on it, what am I gonna do? I feel like the next step for me is to come up— either use a Sharpie or a Pilot pen, maybe. And just sketch some— pull out some fine details on here, add some lines on it. Sharpies will not— you can't wipe those off, they won't bleed on here, which is good to know. Cool. Hey guys, thank you so much for watching. Hope you have a great, great rest of your nights. Today's what, Tuesday? Today's Monday. Oof, Monday. I'll be on during the week sometimes at night. I'm not sure which nights, but I'll try to pop on. Um, again, thank you for watching. I appreciate you all. Uh, Sally, it was so great seeing you live here in the chat. And Jennifer, it was also awesome seeing you live in the chat. So thank you so much. And, uh, Jennifer, be well, and positive thoughts your way. I appreciate it. Appreciate you. All right guys, have a great, great night. Take care. See you soon. Peace and live creatively. Take care. I have to go get to bed. I have work tomorrow. I got school. I don't like to use the word work. I have school tomorrow. Makes it sound more fun to me. Take care, guys.
