Inking Out Loud

Artist Jason Nicholas sketches on Yupo Medium, a plastic non-absorbent paper he won in a giveaway, testing how Sharpie, watercolor, acrylic ink, and colored pencil behave on its slick surface. Inks reactivate with water and colors sit on top without soaking. He wipes away layers to create effects and plans to add bridge cables once it dries.

Hey everybody, hope you're having a great— I almost said Friday, oh my gosh. Wednesday night. I'm popping on to do my quick bridge sketch. I'm actually trying a paper I have never used. It's called Yupo, Y-U-P-O, and I'm trying it because I actually won it. I won it on Instagram the other day and they sent it out, so I'm giving it a try. It's very interesting paper. It's I think it's 72 pounds. It almost has a— it's a synthetic paper, so it's made out of plastic. I'm hoping it's recycled plastic. I don't know how green of a product it is. I'll look into that, but it's definitely a plastic material. Apparently you can wipe off— you can draw on it, you can wipe it off, you can use watercolor, acrylic paints. I'm trying, I'm just thinking tonight and just seeing what it's like. So yeah, hope you guys are doing well. Let me know if you're in the chat, say hello. I see Sally Ann Smith, good to see you, hope all's well. So here's the paper, let me just bring this over. So I'm talking about, it's called Yupo Medium, maybe some of you guys have used it. Um, again, I won it on Instagram through a Legion paper, and it's fun. I just got it yesterday— today I got it, so I wanted to play with it. I wonder if you can read this text on here. It says, a true innovation in fine art substrates. This synthetic tree-free paper is everlasting and non-absorbent. It resists buckling with wet media and can be wiped clean. Pigments retain true clarity and brightness. A new way for for your— a new way for techniques to flourish. This is Yupo Medium. So they have different grades, different weights. This is the medium one. So again, I don't know the manufacturing process. I'm looking to see. I don't know if it's green, you know, environmentally responsible paper. I'm not sure. But I'm not going to get into that stuff. I just want to mess around with it right now. See? What it's like. So I threw down some Sharpie. Let's throw some ink on here. Let's see if we can bleed some stuff. We'll throw some watercolor at it. Just going to go crazy and sketch and see what happens. And it would be cool. There we go. So we're going to be— keep it quick and loose and just sketch. It's always fun to try out new products, new papers. It's, you know, it's part of the process. It's experimenting, learning, having fun with it. It's the only way you're going to know if you find something different that you like, right? So let's see, I'm going to throw some ink at it here. Let's try bleeding some of it. I need a bigger desk or less stuff on it. Maybe I'm gonna throw out some watercolor marker at it. There it is. I will stick that there for now. All right, where's my brush? So anyway, I hope you guys are having a great day. Happy Wednesday. It's been a long week for me. Not in a bad way, just feels like it's going— I don't know, it's just a long week. I almost dipped it so long, I almost dipped my Sharpie in my water.
Womp womp womp.
So if you're watching, feel free to say hello. Love to talk to you. If you have any questions, let me know those as well and see who's out there. Let me zoom in a little bit. So again, I'm just throwing all kinds of stuff at this paper and we'll see what it does. I was curious, it says it wipes clean, so I don't know if it'll wipe Sharpie clean, but You have to wet it. Who the heck knows? I haven't read anything about it. I haven't Googled any videos. So yeah, if you'll notice here, I can actually wipe off this ink I threw down here. That's interesting. Um, and I guess once it dries, if you add water, it'll reactivate it so you can wipe it off. Sharpie is not coming off, which which is to be expected, it's Sharpie. So it's interesting stuff. It has a really slick feel to it. Like it's non-absorbent, so I'm not getting the same watercolor effects I would get, or ink wash effects, I should say. All right, speaking of watercolor, let's just throw some watercolor on here.
Alright, cool.
Let's see, let's break out some IDK. What color? Uh, turquoise. Let's grab some turquoise maybe. Again, I'm just playing around. I want to see what this stuff does. See if we can mix color on it. So here's some, some turquoise. I'm throwing down heavy on here. Paper is not supposed to buckle when it gets wet, and so far that is true. No buckling is happening. Let's just grab some red. Why not? And just see if we can mix these on here. What happens? Just get some purplish stuff happening. Throw some really heavy red down here. So sometimes I talk about setting intentions when I'm working on artwork or messing around. So my intention today is just to mess around with this paper, see what it does. Yeah, I mean, it definitely stays on the surface. It's not getting sucked sucked into this paper at all. It's just floating, which is interesting. Let's throw some yellow. There we go. So it'd be really fun to see how this dries. If I had a hair dryer, I would dry it right now for you guys. This is interesting. Look at the color happening in here. Let's zoom in. This is really interesting what's happening here. It's just kind of making its own thing here. Interesting stuff. Hope you guys are doing well. I just know I see people watching there. I see the chat. I only see one comment in chat. Maybe you're just being shy or in the background. That's cool. I just want to make sure I'm not having any tech issues. Maybe I put you to sleep because I'm boring. That's cool too. It's all good. Cool piece of music here. Oops, let me zoom out. Sorry. Uh, let's do some black Lamy ink. I used Apple Snail ink before. Let's use some black Lamy.
I gotta be careful.
I don't want to smudge and smear the stuff with my palm, so See if we can get this— see if I can get this pen started. Alright, there we go. I think I got it started. Alright, cool. So that was some black Lamy ink I threw down, and now let's throw down some water on top of it. Bleed some of that black ink. Kinda create this road surface happening here.
Boom.
I really like this rusty color that's kind of happening at the bottom. I like it. I'm actually going to pick— lift some of it off and use it back here. Cool, I'm liking the texture. Kind of smooth, real smooth texture down here. It's, it's really interesting. Just kind of flick these railings down, give them a little more depth. Same thing back here, we'll just flick it the wet brush over the ink. Let's do the same thing here, let's kind of flick it, see what it picks up. Create the idea of these railings and— or guardrails here. I'll zoom in so you can see how it's drying. I have to say, I'm actually— I'm liking it so far. Ah, there we go. Cool. Alright, so, so far we have used— we have ink in here. Just taking a little inventory of what we've done. We have ink so far. Apple Snail, and we have Lamy black ink. Of course, started with a Sharpie. What else have we used? And watercolors. Let's— I wanted to throw down some— I'm gonna try some colored pencil, I think.
I should probably wait till—
actually, I'm gonna wait till it dries before I use colored pencil. So we'll save that. Keep it out to remind me— remind me self. Yeah, that's why I don't teach language arts. Um, let's throw down some sepia watercolor marker here, see what that looks like. You will— we will outline the structure here with the sepia ink just to pull it out a little bit more.
Kind of—
I'm not really painting, kind of just flicking my brush.
It's quick flicks across. Cool.
So that's some sepia watercolor marker. See, here's where the wiping will come in handy, I think, because this stuff you can just wipe off. So I got paper towel. I don't like what I just did, so I'm just going to come back and it's gone. It's gone-zo. So sometimes we think about painting as just adding layers. You can think about this as you can subtract layers also. So think about throwing a lot of layers down and just removing or wiping layers away to create effects. So, you know, painting could be an additive process. It could be a subtractive process also. So don't be afraid to take away. It's not always about just adding.
Cool.
I'm actually really liking this. Sally Ann Smith gave me a thumbs up. Thank you, Sally Ann Smith, for the thumbs up. I appreciate that so much. I am going to add some We'll try. It might have to be dry, but I want to do some cables in here on our bridge. Yeah, this is— I feel like this is the kind of paper where you're going to have to kind of be very patient unless you have a hair dryer, but let things dry. Because if I try to draw on here, I'm going to get it all over. It's— it is still very wet. Um, I love the way the colors just mix together. I have to say this, I'm kind of geeking out about this right here. Let me zoom way in. Hopefully you can see that. I mean, these colors are just really magical, what's happening. Love, love, love that effect. I love when things happen and you don't plan it. That's so fun. I'm actually going to wait to sketch the cables until this dries. Um, I think I might leave this here for tonight. We'll take a progress picture of it. I don't mind that it's kind of just running. So my board is at an angle. I like to sketch and paint at an angle. So you can see everything's kind of running downhill. So I like the way it's just puddling up here. I'm going to leave it like that and let it dry, see what happens. Same thing, same thing all over here. It's just puddling, which, um, we'll see what happens. If I don't like it, I should be able to wet it and wipe it off. One thing I didn't try was acrylic ink. Let's just throw some acrylic ink and then we'll wrap up. So I have acrylic ink, put a little bit— oh, if I can open it— on this lid here, just a splash, just a drop. And, uh, let's throw some acrylic ink on here. I love this color, it's called Iron Oxide, one of my favorite acrylic ink colors. A little bit of this can go a long way. This is kind of— throw some in the back bridge. So that's the Iron Oxide there. I'm going to just throw some up front here too.
I just want to see how it, how it dries with these colors.
Uh-oh, this song, this music's put me to sleep. I need something a little peppier. This will be the last thing we do. Thank you for the thumbs up, I just saw one pop up. Appreciate that, guys. Hey, don't feel— don't be afraid to say hello if you're watching. It's always great to check in. I did not do my hair tonight. I'm just looking for a song over here on my playlist. I don't know, I'm actually gonna— let's see. You're going to hear one song and I'm going to hear another song, I think. Let's see if it works because I'm going to play— I want to play some music on Spotify. If I play it for you guys, I'll get shut down because of copyrights, but I'm going to listen to on Spotify. I just need some— something a little different. See if it works. Very cool. Kind of— I do want to blot this area. I don't like this overlap here. There we go. Very awesome. Uh, actually, this area is kind of dry. I can actually— I think I can add some Sharpie on top of this. Oh, that stunk, but I can wipe it. Uh, I need a Sharpie with more ink. Let's try this one. Alright guys, let me know in the comments if you like this, the way it's looking so far. Again, I'm trying different paper. I was fortunate enough to win in a random drawing, so that was awesome. It's called Yupo, Y-U-P-O, and it's like plastic, non-absorbent. It's plastic material. And yeah, we'll see how it dries, and I'll work on it probably again tomorrow. I'm gonna take a picture and we'll post a progress shot. And this is Bridge Sketch 71. I have crossed over the 70 mark. Did I do one yesterday? What did I do yesterday? Did I do a bridge? I think I may have skipped yesterday. It may— I may have been the first day I skipped doing a bridge consecutively. I have to go back and look. I don't remember. I do know I want to take a picture. I always appreciate you guys watching. I love seeing your posts, your artwork. It's always inspiring. Thank you for liking and sharing my post. That's always really awesome. My page has been growing, viewers have been growing, so I really appreciate that. Thanks to you guys. Let's get this. I'd love to get over 1,000 followers by the end of the month. We only need 15 more. 15. So if we get over 1,000, I'll do some kind of drawing, like a giveaway of a sketch. That'll be cool. Hey, Sally says, thank you, it's lovely. Ah, Sally Ann, I'm glad you like it. Yeah, so it's— I'm gonna come back after it dries. I'll definitely add the cables. Here, and we'll see. Maybe we'll add some more layers and play around with it. Hey, thank you guys so much. Have an amazing Thursday. I will be on probably Friday night, Friday night. Um, take care. Have an amazing day. Keep paying it forward with creativity and peace, and live creatively. Have a great, great night. See you guys soon. Take care.
