LIVE Sketch | Urban Sketching & Architecture | The INKspired Life

In this informal livestream, Jason Nicholas (The INKspired Life) takes viewers on a nighttime walk through a park, searching for bunnies while sketching and chatting. He shares his love for urban sketching, architecture, and nature, reflects on how changing environments—parks, New York City, his studio—fuel his creative brain, and discusses his teaching career, the fatigue of running an architecture practice, and the upcoming summer break. Jason promotes his podcast "Simply Being Human," his YouTube and social channels, and an August 1st workshop at Stationery Fest in Brooklyn. Throughout the stream he interacts with live chat participants (Edie, Jen, Terry, etc.), offers advice on overcoming creative blocks by changing location or music, mentions his annual passes to the Met and MoMA, and provides observations about park wildlife (bunnies, finches, deer, coyotes). The livestream ends with a thank‑you, a call to subscribe, and a reminder to embrace imperfection in creative work.

Hope you're having an awesome day today. I'm popping on quick. I am out taking a walk and I thought I'd just livestream for a minute or two. I'm actually, I'll show you my situation. Taking a nice walk tonight here. Got my sketching gear right here. Of course I got my Lockbee stuff with me, boom. Yeah, I thought it'd be cool to walk around, maybe do some sketching here, um, for a few minutes or so. So if you want to hang with me for a few, that'd be cool. We'll just take a quick walk and we're gonna go look for some bunnies. Yes, I said bunny. Um, stay tuned because I'll be posting some videos of sketches from here. Um, I just kind of wrapped up a sketching session And it's been a lot of fun just kind of walking around and just getting— I just need a change of scenery today, so I got out of the house a little bit, you know, from school to home to walking. Unfortunately, my pup is not with me. She said, "I want to stay home." So I am doing a solo walk. So let me put my gear in my bag and— Hang with me for a few minutes. I appreciate you. So I don't have my gimbal, I am just holding my phone.
Oh.
Bear with me as I hold my phone, my bag, and my sketchbook. So I love carrying this thing with me, as you guys know. This folio goes almost everywhere with me, so it's such a great, great tool. But yeah, let's throw this on, let's take a quick walk. Uh, I'm on my way in here. I always look for bunnies, and I saw, I think I counted 7 on my way in. So I'm gonna head down the path. Let's see if we see any more. I hope you're having a good day. Let me know what you're up to. And, um, yeah, got a plane up there kind of Kind of low flying. I'm going to walk over here. I love this kind of overlook.
Oh, what the heck is that? There's a bunny.
That's our first bunny sighting. Do you see it straight ahead? Bunny number one straight ahead. They are all over tonight. I have never seen this many out at one time.
Let me zip this thing here. Ah!
All right, this has been a long before you. Let's continue on our path.
All right.
You know, when we're in nature walking around, I think we kind of need to remember whose home we're actually walking in. Oh, there he goes. You know, be respectful of the grounds, the animals, the creatures. And, um, yeah, I see, I see way too much litter sometimes. This park is actually pretty good and people are pretty good about it. It does drive me crazy when I see dirt bikes ripping through here and quads. Um, but yeah, all right, let's continue on our path. I see another one, might be the same one up ahead.
Hello.
Hi. What's up, bunny? I'm not gonna hurt you, I promise. I just wanna say hello.
Yeah.
How are you? I feel so bad. I don't want to chase them away. Oh, there's another one up there. A chihuahua. They are everywhere. Usually I don't see many up on this level. I call this Middle Earth, kind of this area. This park section for me has like 3 levels. We're on Middle Earth. Up the hill we have, uh, I don't know, I never gave it a name. What should we call there? Call it Up the Hill. Up the Hill Earth? That's boring. Middle Earth, Uphill Land, and we're actually going to go down right now to the lower level. I feel like we're in a shopping mall of greenery. And beauty. Well, not really a shopping mall. So if you're just joining me, my name is Jason Nicholas Nicholas with the Inkspired Life. I love sketching, especially architecture. Love nature, love hiking and walking. Um, I just came on randomly tonight and I wanted to show you where I'm at. Pardon any shaky cameras, I'm literally just holding my phone at a really cool place. Feel free to say hi in the comments, and if you like this, give me a thumbs up, subscribe. I livestream from here, my studio, New York City, and you'll catch me walking outside. I call them hiking mics where I'm just thinking and talking. I have a podcast called Simply Being Human. Uh, check that out, and it's just me riffing about kind of life and embracing imperfection. And then also I sketch, you know, I'm always sketching, especially buildings, architecture. So thanks for joining, and check out my channel on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and the old TikTok, The Inkspired Life. But enough about that, let's see if we see any bunnies. Oh yeah. This is where I saw 7 when I came in. There's one actually straight ahead. I'm going to try to hold the camera a little steady. All right, we got one there. Just kind of walk down here and we'll walk back. Um, this is where I saw a bunch earlier today. I'm gonna— I gotta switch my gear up for a second. Just give me a minute here. I'm gonna put this over my shoulder. All right, there we go. All right, cool. I saw the cutest little bunny hanging out here with mom or dad. They're not here now, they're gone. Feel free to say hello in the chat. Terry said hello. Hey, Terry, how are you? I'm also seeing these beautiful finches. Is the Goldfinch the state bird of New Jersey? I can't really zoom, but they're flying up around there. And we'll just kind of walk here and turn around. This is Grass Clipping Alley. Next time I'll try to livestream with my gimbal so it's not so bouncy. All right, so we're gonna head down this path, see if there's any more rabbits on our way out. Let me riff a little bit as we're walking. Um, I'm always speaking off the cuff, so I don't know— I don't even know what Nothing's pre-planned. What do we want to talk about? School's ending, last week of school. And I love teaching, I love it so, so much, but summer is always a welcome break, change of mindset, change of location. And I'll focus a little bit more on some architecture this summer. I have some really fun design projects, so that's gonna be awesome. And I think for me, I need change in life. I get restless being in the same environment for a long time. One of the reasons I think I started teaching 7 years ago is I needed a change. I needed to riff on something different. You know, running my architecture business full year, 20— full-time, 20-something years, doing everything from marketing to design to meeting to you name it, got wore— wore me out a little bit. So teaching came along by chance, and I love it so much. I'm on year, um, ending year 7, and my brain needs to be doing different things. I'm a creative brain, always so many things going on at the same time. There's a rabbit straight ahead. And I think, you know, that's why I love being out here in nature. I also love being in New York City. Two extremely different environments, but it really— oh, look, we got a stare-down going. Bunny stare-down. Um, but I think that mix of environments is what I thrive on. It's what kind of fuels and feeds my creative brain. The quiet solitude of nature and the hustle bustle of the city. That infusion really sparks and fuels creativity for me. So if you're a creative brain, you know, what are some things you do to kind of keep your creative well, uh, filled up? Mergirim said hi. Big fan said hi. Wow, you're a big fan! That's so cool. I appreciate that. I've I lost a rabbit. Um, I haven't seen your name before, but if that's true, that's cool. Mr. Bunny went bye-bye. Um, I do have to watch also because there are bears here, and I haven't seen any in a long time here. I've seen, uh, coyotes here. Foxes, rabbits, of course, we just saw some, uh, deer. I hear something in the woods up here, but we're not going to investigate it, especially as sunset starting to happen. Yeah, there's some kind of noise going on up here. I think it's just squirrels. Yes, I'm telling myself it's just squirrels.
Huh.
Hey, Edie's in the house. Edie, good to see you. So again, yeah, I'm just riffing. So change of environment is a great way for me to stimulate my creative brain, to refuel my creative brain in different ways. So you'll see me in the parks, you'll see me in nature, you'll see me in the city, or you'll see me at home, you know, sketching. Um, solitude, different music. So if you're ever feeling like you're stuck, you can't think of new ideas, change your location, change your environment, um, and see what happens. And it could be a physical environment, it could be, uh, just something visual. Maybe change the room in your— change where you usually create in your house, like change the room or go to a different— go to the kitchen instead of your bedroom, wherever. Change your state of being through music, that's helpful too. Yeah, it's just that stagnation sometimes that kind of frustrates me as a creative. Like, I feel like I'm failing sometimes when I can't come up with new ideas or I'm stuck on a sketch. And it's not really failure. It's, you know, being stuck in a creative process is part of simply being human, you know. Recognize it and do something to change it. All right, we'll take one look up Middle-earth here and then we'll head out. Hey, Jen's in the house. Jen, how are you? So good to see you. Thanks for tuning in. I appreciate everybody watching live. If you like this, give me a thumbs up. Um, again, more walk and talks from parks, New York City this summer, sketching, livestream sketching. Uh, subscribe, it'd be amazing. I'd love to have you join our Awesome community. You see Edie in the house and Jen. They are two real valuable members that partake in our community. So, love that. Jen says, "Great to be here." Thank you. All right, guys, let's walk up the hill. Maybe I'll wrap at the top. So, we're going to go up here. I know I keep apologizing, but again, part of— hey, it's just part of the process. I got a shaky camera, I'm holding my phone. I have a gimbal with me, but I can't figure out how to livestream from it yet. It's a pain in the butt. But, uh, hey, like I always say, embrace imperfection. I could have sat and cried and said, forget it, I'm not live streaming because I— it's gonna be shaky. But you know what, screw it, just go for it, guys. Don't be afraid, put stuff out there. They say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself. Andy Warhol. Yeah, that's a great quote. I love that. You have to take ownership, take initiative. Guys, check this out. These little white moth things are flying around here. We're gonna walk into it. That is a screenshot, guys, right there. That's gorgeous.
Screenshot.
That was worth the price of admission.
Wow.
Let's do that. It's good over here. Just kind of get down into it. Edie, none that I've discovered. None that I've discovered.
And I'm not looking. Let's kind of get over here.
Check out that sky. Isn't it awesome? I'm gonna do a— bear with me, I'm gonna do a selfie here.
Hello.
All right, enough of me. You guys don't want to see me. I did not do my hair today. Edie says it was gorgeous here in New York City. This weather has been spectacular. So I'm hoping to get into NYC Saturday. I don't know where the sketchers are sketching yet. But, um, depending on the weather, I might pop in. I've been itching to go to, um, MoMA. I may head over in the morning, just go to MoMA, walk around a little bit, visit the Starry Night, of course. I think there's an exhibit there also of— I think the name of it, the Nagasaki Capsule or something. Some kind of architectural, um, exhibit. I think it's still there. I'd love to see that as well. And if I pop into the city, I'll do, uh, try to do some quick live streams. All right, that's kind of— thanks for sticking with me. On my head, those are my sunglasses. Those white things were my sunglasses. You're too kind, Jen. You're way too kind, but thank you. I appreciate that. All right, I'm gonna start to head out, guys. Have you— let me know in the chat, have you enjoyed this kind of Walk in nature, some close-ups. All right, so today we had some bunny sightings. So I literally counted 14 since I got here. Some may be duplicates. I don't, I don't know the rabbits by name and look yet, but we'll say 14. All right, well, we'll go down to 10. We'll say 10, 10 different bunnies. Um, that was really amazing. I love the sounds out here too. Hey Edie, yeah, thanks. I have a, I have an annual pass. And it'll pass tomorrow. So I want to capitalize on it as much as I can, take advantage of it. It's worth it for me if I go at least, um, like 3 times, 4 times a year, which I, I try to get there once, once a quarter, once a season. Also, same thing with the Met. And the Met, I have a pass, but I really need to go back and spend a lot of time there. Last time I was at the Met, I really just focused on a small section of it, but I really want to explore it in detail. So literally, I could spend the entire day or days if— or week or months there. There's so much to see. I love the Met, love MoMA, I love New York City, and I love you guys. Thank you for watching. I appreciate your time, your feedback, your positivity. I was hoping we'd see some deer before I leave. Usually I see deer, they like to hide kind of in this area. Sometimes they're laying down in the grass up here, but no deer sightings. [FOREIGN LANGUAGE] And thank the Lord, no bear sightings. That would kind of suck. We're gonna go down the hill and walk out. So if you wanna stick with me for another minute, 2 minutes, awesome. Gonna head out now. And we'll go back down to the lower level. Last bunny check. I'll walk out from there. LeMat is gigantic. Even with a map, You get lost every time. Yeah, so I've only— so I've been to the Met twice. Once in high school— sorry, once in college, and once I think this past winter. It is huge. So I agree. I only explored the— pardon me if I get it wrong— is it the American wing? I don't know what they call it. The American wing? Where they have like a Frank Lloyd Wright building. Um, actually, I was there and where they have all the Egyptian things. So I was in those two areas. Um, I was there mostly to sketch with a group, so I didn't really wander and explore that much. But this, the great outdoors, this is what I met today. I never met a park. I didn't like. I never met a park I didn't like. And I love these flowers. I can't get up there, can I?
Hold on.
Oh, there's poison ivy in here.
All right.
I love those daisies. All right, down the hill we go. I miss my pup. She just The last few times I came to the park with her, different parks, she refused to get out of the car, which was really weird. So she's not walking with me tonight. She's home. I just came solo. All right, last bunny sighting as we head out. And we'll go this way. When you go to the Met, you've beelined for the 19th century European wing. Good pro tip. Thank you, Jen. Take care. It's good seeing you. Hope to see you soon. Thank you, Jen. I appreciate your time. It's been a while. I appreciate you, Edie. Jason Nicholas, uh, Gigi. You're my top 3 YouTube viewers and I really appreciate that. And we have JLM who joins us as well and a couple of other people. So thank you everybody. All right, let me know if you have any final questions or comments. Keep your eyes here on the right-hand side, usually where I see the bunnies the most. And I think the bunnies have all gone home. Home for the night. Alright, so again, I'm Jason Nicholas Nicholas with The Inspired Life. I appreciate your time so much. Hit that thumbs up button, please, if you're watching, whether it's live or replay. If you haven't subscribed, I would love for you to subscribe. [FOREIGN LANGUAGE] So if you want to sketch architecture with me, loose style architecture, go to stationeryfest.com. Look at the workshops. You'll find me listed on August 1st, 11:30 AM. Still some tickets available. I have 15 seats, and I think we've sold 8 tickets or 9 tickets. So I'd love for you to join me. It'd be— it's gonna be a lot of fun. I'll walk you through my sketch framework and, um, yeah, just throw down some lines on paper. It's always a good time. All right, should we do a— we'll end with a selfie. See, sunglasses. All right, I appreciate you. HeartCam here. Your time means the world to me. Thank you for helping me spread the message of Positivity through creativity. Yeah, it's important.
