Live Walk and Talk

Artist Jason Nicholas walks through a county park with his dog Olivia, reflecting on time, nature, and how environments shape his sketching. He's crowdsourcing a name for his urban-sketching workshop at Stationery Fest in Brooklyn next summer, limited to 15 people, and inviting viewers to a live sketching session that evening.

Spin move. Beautiful day, really warm here today, and I'm liking it, liking the warm weather. So I'm just out here walking, and I guess today on my brain is time. I'm thinking about time. This week has flown by. Do you have weeks that go really, really fast? And weeks that go really slow. I think we all do, right? I think we all experience those. And I'm out here walking, it's quiet, it's peaceful, it's calm, it's still. And you know, it just makes me think about kind of a stillness and calmness. Let me change the camera so you can see what I'm looking at. Hold on. Boom. Um, check out that reflection on the water. I love the way those trees reflect back there. Hey Jen, good to see you. Hope all's well. So I just wanted to pop on while I'm walking, just some random thoughts. Yeah, this week has flown by. I feel like, uh, a spring that's been compressed, waiting to go into decompression mode. Um, not— it hasn't been a bad week, it's been a really, really great week, but I just lost track of time and there were so many things happening and my head spinning. And, um, and that's okay, but I find that when that happens it can become overwhelming, right? So getting outside and walking is a great way for me to kind of decompress and slow down. And kind of like sketching, just unwind a little bit. I need that change of brain, the change of physical state, otherwise I'd go cray-cray. So, um, it's great to see you. Thank you guys for popping on here live. Again, I'm just riffing, so don't mind me if I'm bumbling and stumbling and fumbling. I don't even know what I'm going to talk about. But I just want to take you along with me, and I'll just be quiet. We'll let kind of the walk do the talking. By the way, here's my pup. I'm the kind of person that needs both, like, peaceful outdoor nature and warm city fast vibes. It's that mix that keeps me going, keeps me interested in life. And it just goes back to time again. There's a time and place for everything. We don't always know, um, you know, where we'll be at those times. But I think— I kind of believe we are meant to be in certain places at certain times. It's just kind of how life works, even though we don't always see it that way. And instead of fighting with it, I'm just trying to, you know, embrace the moment, embrace those times. Oh, a frog just jumped. Welcome viewers, thank you guys for tuning in. Feel free to ask me questions. Again, I'm just riffing here instead of walking and talking. It's like, it's like, um, bumbling and stumbling. I'm just being me. Look, there's a birdhouse over there. Say hi to Olivia.
Olivia, say hi. Olivia, say hi.
It's just so great being out here on a beautiful walk. Maybe we'll get some kind of a sunset happening. It'd be great to see that. You never know. So let's talk about sketching for a second. When I'm walking in the city, obviously I'm looking at buildings, right? Architecture. But when I'm out in nature, uh, I'm looking at shapes, shadows, light, textures. So my eye is kind of trained and my brain is trained in different ways depending on my location. So nature feeds my creativity in different ways that a city vibe feeds it. Do you hear that sound? Those are raccoons. Those are raccoons that you hear. I can't see them, they're up in the trees, but you can hear them. Hello, sincerely. Hello, Edie, good to see you. Yeah, guys, those are raccoons you hear. Or heard. They've seen me and stopped. I can't see them. They're definitely up in the trees somewhere. Another thing about nature are the sounds, the sounds of the animals. Crunching of the rocks under my feet. Uh, we're approaching a stream soon. You might hear the water. And I do have to watch for bears. Yes, bears. There are bears out here. I haven't seen any. But they are in the woods. This is their home. We're coming upon the stream. We have a little tiny stream here. I love the reflection of the trees on the water. All right, Libby, let's continue. Olivia wants to turn around, I turn around. Sometimes you got to trust your pup and their instincts, right? Am I armed? No, I am not armed. Um, I do have this air horn app on my phone that I can blast if I need to. Okay, let's go this way. Let's go this way. Let's go up the hill. She's fighting me. All right, we're not gonna go up the hill. Um, so no, I don't have, um, anything. I'm not armed, by the way. Sorry for the shaky camera. I don't have a gimbal. Yeah, no worries. I feel safe. I gotta change hands here. I feel safe out here. Deer are very common here as well. Rabbits. I haven't seen any. I've been looking for bunnies. We usually see them around this time of night. So we'll go back the way we came in. They usually hang out there. Yeah, I know, Edie. This is, this is a cool place. This actually used to be, um, this used to be a ski area a long time ago in town. We had a ski, just a real small kind of, not resort, but a ski area. Um, so these, this property here was used for this, the ski lodge, the ski slopes. It's a really cool— it's a county park right now, so it's a really cool county park. Some nice gravel paths to walk on, and we'll usually walk a mile or 2 miles. We got someone put birdhouses everywhere. It's kind of cool to see them. Beautiful white tree in the background there. I love this time of year, especially before all the foliage blooms and blossoms, because you can see through the trees. There's some hidden things here. If you look here, here's a cool discovery. There's a concrete— I don't know if you can see it— there's like a concrete pillar or foundation sticking out of the ground, some kind of leftover from when the ski lodge ski slope thing was here. So there are kinds of little kinds of relics around this ground like that. No polar bears. We are lucky we have no polar bears here, especially on an 80-degree day. So that was funny. I'll show you a close-up. Here's a artifacts kind of coming up here. I'll show you here. If you look to the right, here's the old, the concrete pillar kind of in the ground right here. Again, that's just like one. There's a pipe in the ground here, so it's kind of cool. Um, here's one of my favorite leftovers and remains. If you look straight ahead, there's a chimney, but my dog stopped. Here we are. Here's a chimney that's just kind of standing. So obviously there was a building here at one point in time, and now there is nothing but a chimney standing. And whenever I see this, it kind of reminds me of, uh, Just like buildings, people need to have strong foundations. We need to have strong foundations in our lives, a strong base to build off of. Just like that chimney has kind of survived— oh, look, you see the sun back there— just like that chimney has withstood the test of time, it's because it was built solid, right? So as humans, we need to be built solid, and I mean you know, a foundation, whether it's an emotional, spiritual, health, um, mental, whatever foundation, um, keeping those strong and built up is a great way to withstand the test of time. And this kind of goes back to what we were talking about before with time, right? Time is just something that we have to deal with in our own way. It goes fast, it goes slow, but we can learn how to process it. So having a strong base, a strong foundation, really helps you to withstand the test of time and process time. And you know, there's no escaping it. Dealing with time is, uh, just part of what we do with, right? Deal with. Just part of simply being Human. Das ist gar nicht 'cause Jeffrey Dahmer ate. Oh my gosh, Edie, you are so silly. There is no Jeffrey Dahmers in here. You are so silly. My dog is being— Olivia is being Olivia. She's amazing, I love her, but when she wants to go her own way, she lets me know. No, I am safe. This is a safe place. I wouldn't be risking my life for a mere YouTube livestream. Come on, peeps. Um, especially when I have to sketch tonight. All right, speaking of which, guys, if you're watching, I have a poll here on YouTube. If you go to our community, the posts, I have a poll I'd like you guys to answer for me. You don't want to see me, right? Let's look at the view. So I had great news today. I am going to be an instructor teaching a sketching workshop at Stationery Fest this summer in Brooklyn. It's gonna be a huge event, and I'm gonna teach urban sketching, my loose style. But I need your help. I need you to help me pick a name out for my workshop. So on my community section, you'll see a poll. There are 4 choices. Pick whatever resonates with you the most, um, because I have a few ideas, but I'm not sure what the best name or title of the workshop would be. By the way, thank you for the thumbs up. I see that. Thank you, John, appreciate that. I'm super excited. I applied to be in— I applied to have a workshop back in January. I finally heard today. I'm looking forward to getting out there and just putting more positivity through creativity in the world. So right now it's one workshop limited to 15 people. If it sells out, we'll add more. So the event is called Stationery Fest. It's in Brooklyn this summer. You will definitely hear more about it from me. Olivia's taking me up the hill. All right guys, you want to hang with me for a few more minutes? That'd be cool. As we walk, riff, and talk, I'm going to start bringing my gimbals with— my gimbal with me. So I have a steady image. I didn't really plan on going live, but I wanted to do my, uh, hike and mic talk live today. See a bunch of new people on there. 17 people. Hello, 17 people! Feel free to say hi. Shout out to Jen and Edie. You guys are regulars in the chat, and something just ran away from me. Maybe just casing it out. Somebody literally ran away from me right over in here. Ah, check out that sun, guys! Oh my gosh, look at that sunset going down. Is that cool? Wow. Oh good, we're going to go— oh good, she's going up the hill. We got to go up the hill. Let's show everybody this cool view. All right guys, we're going up this hill. All right, stay tuned. You got to check out this nice little view in two directions. All right, anybody watching live or replays, if you can grab a screenshot of this, that would be awesome. I need a screenshot, but let me spin around. Great view, huh? Check that out. Wow. I love sunsets. Screenshot time, guys. I'm gonna stop and hold the phone with both hands.
Hold it.
We gotta— we do a selfie. Wow, check that out!
That's awesome!
Is amazing. No, that wasn't a rat, I don't think. I think it was a squirrel. I have not seen rats here, actually. You guys were, uh, witness to my biggest rat sighting on my Barcelona livestream. That was kind of creepy. I know, look at that sky, right? This is the perfect way to end a day of being inside. Hold on, I got to do spin move because Lydia wrapped around me. Spin move. All right, I'm going to show you this tree up here. There's a white tree in the distance I really like.
I don't know what it—
I have to Google it. Maybe it's a dogwood tree. Screenshot time. Shout out to my pup, she's cooperating, she's stopping for me. Oh, hello, Life on Two Wheels. That's awesome. Um, I haven't done the fire tower walk, so I'm up for doing that sometime. I gotta definitely give the fire tower walk a try.
It's—
I think it's a couple miles. I just haven't made it up there yet. It's on my list, right? This is a cool place. But let's keep it low-key so it doesn't become too popular. I'm being selfish. I like the quietness of it, you know what I'm saying? Olivia, let's go back up this way. Let's go this way, Liv. I love this view too, back up the hill to the trees. ¡Vale! Let's go this way, Livi. Again, I'll start bringing my gimbal with me on walks so I can have a nice steady cam. So thanks for putting up with my shakiness here. Yeah, please hit that like, guys. If you're watching, hit that like, thumbs up, like, subscribe. Really, I would love and appreciate that so, so much. I'm being pulled a little bit. Oh, I'm being pulled up the hill. Olivia, Olivia, let's go to the top. Sometimes in life, for the people we love, the animals we love, we need to put up with a little bit of stubbornness. Um, so sometimes we have to be a little bit flexible with those we really love. Oh, Livy, stop. You're welcome, Jen. Thank you, guys. I'm gonna wrap up in a minute. Got a bench. Let's sit down. We call this the reflection bench. We are not going to sit on the bench because it looks like the birds have been enjoying it. Um, Olivia, we're going to head and start heading back, okay? Want to head back, buddy? All right, guys, let me know if you have any final questions, comments. I will be live streaming sketching tonight, probably around 9:00 PM-ish. I actually have homework I need to get done for a deadline I have tomorrow. I hope you guys really enjoyed this, this kind of walk and talk, hike and mic, bugs in my face livestream. Check out the sun behind me. Let's do that. There we go. This has been really fun, and I really appreciate your time, guys. Yeah, hopefully you got a little bit of positivity out of this, a little bit of maybe a break in your schedule. Maybe I put you to sleep with my ASMR voice. We're gonna work on that too more, guys. Thanks for your suggestions last night, and I appreciate y'all. So if you wanna watch some livestream sketching, join me tonight around 9 o'clock PM. Don't know what I'm sketching yet. Most likely will be something NYC-inspired, but love sketching with you guys. It's always a fun time, so come hang out, 9 o'clock PM here on my YouTube channel. Be sure to give me a thumbs up. And Olivia, give us a thumbs up. Um, and I'd love to see you guys back here later today, 9:00 PM-ish, right? Until we meet again, sketch boldly, live creatively, and inspire endlessly. One more look at the sunset. Screenshot. All right guys, I'm out. Catch you later on the live stream. Also check— look for me on Instagram.
