LIVE : Walk: Are the bunnies out today

Architect Jason Nicholas walks through a New York county park sketching landscapes and hunting for bunnies, chatting with viewers about his practice. He spots one bunny and three deer, reflects on how sketching reshapes how you see space, and keeps reminding everyone to embrace imperfection.

It's, um, what day is it? Thursday, 7:28 PM-ish. I'm— 7— wow, I didn't know it's that late. I just— probably in here about an hour, I guess, walking around and, um, sketching. I got my sketchbook here. Boom. So yeah, I've been just walking around sketching a little bit. It's been raining a little bit on and off, so Love getting that fresh air every day. I am solo, no company. My pup is not here today. She didn't want to come out for a little stroll, so it might be the weather. You know, sometimes when it's kind of rainy and stormy, I get it, she doesn't want to come out. But I hope you're having a good day today. Yeah, so it's been nice walking around sketching and I'm gonna head out of the park, and, um, I did not see any bunnies on my way in. There were no bunnies on the way in, so I thought I'd punch up the signal here, go live. I don't know if that's an expression. Well, I punched up the signal, we're going live, and let's see if there's any bunny sightings on the way out. I hope you are having a good day. I may have said that 10 times because it's true. I always wish you have the best day, and if it's not the best day, you can process it and then, oh, learn something from it, grow from it, and move forward, right? It's kind of what life's about, growing and moving forward. Um, here's a sketch I did. I'll show you a quick sketch. So this summer I'm trying to— I'm working on landscapes. I've never really sketched landscapes before. And it's kind of teaching me to observe and look at things differently. So, uh, it's been fun to be out and about. Just, I've been carrying this little book with me. I love— shout out to Ugly Books, uh, they're awesome. I love them. This fits in my pocket, just so much fun to carry around. But sketching something I've never sketched before is training me to see things differently. I'm seeing this landscape very differently. I'm noticing, like, I'm just noticing the contours and how things just kind of slope and curve. And we have— I'm also noticing a lot about foreground and midground and background, right? We kind of have these trees here in the foreground and midground back there, and then we have all the way in the background, those trees. So You know, getting out of your comfort zone, doing something you don't normally do, um, for me, sketching something I don't normally sketch is really just helping me process the world in a whole different way and developing a different set of tools and skill sets and mindsets for life and creativity. So hopefully that resonates. And if you're watching, make sure you hit that like button if you like this kind of walk and talk stuff. Or you want to see me do some sketching, uh, I do a lot of architectural sketching. I do live streams from here, New York City. Yeah, hope you're having a good day. So let's go down. All right, so I call this a section here, this is Middle Earth. I call this Middle Earth here. Let's just give a quick scan. Boom, Middle Earth. If you go up that hill You know what, I had a name for it the other day and I can't remember what it was. So, up the hill land. It's not very exciting, is it? Very nice. Hey, thank you. I see, I'm sorry, Liang Peter. I'm reading on my phone, so if I mispronounce it, I'm sorry. But let's go down to Bunny Alley. This is where I see bunnies 97% of the time. They don't like to come out on rainy days. Um, if you go back to my last live stream, check that out, you'll see we did a little, little, uh, bunny session. But let's see if any popped out. There were none here about an hour or so ago when I came into the Park. Head to the right, and this is Bunny Alley down here. Record sighting has been 10. Um, I'm going to say 7. Oh, there's some deer! Did you guys see the deer? They're all the way down there. Hello, deer! Hi, guys! They're so cute. I know they're way down here, but if you can see the really small one on the right, that deer was actually, was actually running towards me and my pup the other day, like sprinting towards us. I didn't know what it was from a distance. I thought it was like a coyote or something. So I got panicked and started to run out the opposite direction. Then I stopped for some reason and turned out to be this cool little deer. They're gone. If you're keeping score at home, the nature scoreboard we started last livestream: deer, 3. Bunnies. I forgot the bunnies were at zero because we didn't see any last time. I was here yesterday and we saw 5. I think it was 5. Yes, very nature vibes. It is. This is a county, a county park I am walking in. All right, let's keep our eyes open and do some bunny spotting. All right, we'll start here. Oops, pardon the shaky cam. I'm just holding my phone. I don't have my gimbal. Well, I do have it, but I can't livestream from it. I don't know why, but that's okay. My philosophy is embrace imperfection. If we always wait to do things when the timing is perfect, or when we're perfect, or everything's in alignment perfectly, you know what? Nothing would ever happen. So embrace imperfection and, uh, go with it. Usually bunnies like to climb on these rocks here. None today. All right, we're going to head out, uh, so stick around for like 2 more minutes or so. We'll exit through Bunny Alley. Usually they're on hanging out on the right-hand side. Yeah, so if you like this kind of stuff, hit that thumbs up, even subscribe to my YouTube channel. Um, I do hikes and mics, just kind of talk off the top of my head. Here in New York City, um, but my main thing is sketching. I love sketching, especially loose style architecture. I am an architect, so, and I love sketching. All right, they just mowed this, must have been today because it was overgrown yesterday, which should make bunny spotting easier. Just gonna pan around. Negative. I don't think they're gonna come out and play today, guys. That's okay. We saw some deer. That's awesome. I'll take that. Nothing. Nothing. Yeah, I don't— no bunny spotting is happening, and that's okay. You know why? It's been a rewarding hour and a half or so out here today. Love walking in the rain, so I got to do that, check. It's been quiet here, check. I have a story about that in a second. Um, I got this sketch, boom, check. Saw some deer, check, check. So it's been a great day. Um, so I went to— I was at a— I went to a different park yesterday with my pup, and, um, the access, public access road to the park, which actually leads to a, um, a college campus. Uh, it was ridiculous. It's a very narrow road. We were walking up it. People are flying up and down that road like crazy. The speed was outrageous. Yeah, I'm venting here because, um, they didn't even slow down. Even when I was— I went— we went to the side of the road and they flew— would fly past us. Very uncomfortable, very unsafe. So a shout out to people that pay attention and respect other people's space, especially people that are walking. Um, shout out to those of you who do that. That's huge. Um, I left there not a very happy person. And I'm usually pretty chill, pretty, pretty chill, but not when, uh, there's safety at stake. All right, we're going to look at these flowers up close cuz I think they're just really beautiful. I just love the colors here. I love the purples and whites happening. Edie, how are you? Good to see you. Hope you're doing well. I missed anybody else in the chat. Hello. I saw the name Michael pop up. So yeah, so you guys are— you're just catching me on my way out. I'm just scanning the hedges here on the right because they like to hide in here. They probably actually live in here. I'm sure they have homes. It's like bunny city back in here, but they do not like Rainy days, what the heck. Hey Gigi, good to see you, hope you're doing well. Happy Thursday, I hope you're having a great day everybody. Let's just take a minute and we'll just kind of soak it all in guys. So like I was saying earlier that I'm just working on sketching nature. I don't— I've never really sketched trees and all that stuff and landscapes. Not true, back in college I did because I minored in landscape architecture. So it's been years. So this summer I'm trying to focus a little more on landscaping. It's really teaching me and training me to see the world, the landscape world differently. You know, I'm really now very, very keen. I've always been keen on perspective, but this kind of winding road here, this has such a great perspective, right? Look how it gets smaller as it goes in the distance. Um, I'm noticing outdoors, I'm just noticing layers of— what do we call it— space. Layers of space, you know, foreground, midground, background. Um, it's been really cool to process the environment differently, so I'm really appreciating, and I'm appreciating the shape and the edges of trees, you know, kind of look at the jaggedy edges of the tree against the sky there. If you look here, right, it's not perfect. We like to draw trees with these beautiful round lollipop tops. This is not a lollipop top tree. I mean, just look how jaggedy and scrappy and squiggly it is, right? Well, here Oh my gosh, is Jeff— good to see you, hope all's well. Happy birthday! Did I see there's a happy birthday to Gigi? Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Gigi NYC, happy birthday to you. My gift is— I did not sing that to you. Because you don't want to hear me singing. Um, okay, I hope you're doing well. That's amazing. Congrats, congrats. I hope you're having some delicious, um, cake or something. If it was me, I'd be having tres leches. I'm a huge tres leches cake fan. That's actually— that is my favorite cake. It even surpasses ice cream cake. Guys, no bunnies. What the heck? All right, I know I'm kind of walking in circles, but I'm stalling to hopefully see something. The deer were cool though. Oh, that's so funny. Did I Well, happy birthday again. I just, I guess I wished it earlier so I wouldn't have forgotten today. If you guys want to stick around, put yes in the chat. I will do another lap around here. But no, this stinks, we don't want to stay. Let me know in chat, say yes, we'll do another quick lap to the end and back. Um, Yeah, let me know. There's a family actually taking photos up the hill here, so I'm not gonna— oh, maybe I'll head up there, but I don't want to get in their way. Yes, we got a yes! Okay, let's take another lap, guys. So hold on, I want— I have a gimbal. I have this gimbal right here. I'll show you. Oh, did I pack it? No, right here. Boom. So I took some video earlier, but it's— to livestream with it is a pain in the butt. I wish I can get it to work easier, so these videos would be so much smoother. But I have an expert friend or two that I can ask for help, and you guys know one of them, so shout out to Sifat. At the NYC Walking Show. Check him out, he's awesome. Oh, you called me Michael. Um, that's cool. I like the name Michael. So the first thing that pops in my brain when I hear Michael is Michael Knight from Knight Rider. So Michael Knight, Knight Rider. I also think of Michael Jordan. I think of Mike Brady, Brady Bunch, which was a show that one of the, one of the factors that kind of inspired me to become an architect was the show The Brady Bunch because Mike Brady was, he was an architect. Yeah. So you can call me Michael. I'll take it as a compliment. I've been called much worse, and, and by students, mind you. Just a few though, just a very, very minute amount. All right, let's see. We're gonna see if there's any by the rocks. Yes, Michael Myers, right? Uh, Friday the 13th. Um, I do not have my hockey mask. Is it— was he from Halloween or Friday the 13th? I don't remember. No, I think Jason Nicholas was Friday the 13th. Michael Myers was Halloween, right? Well, the scorecard— if you're keeping that nature scorecard, guys at home, it is still— well, it changed tonight. It is now deer 3, bunnies 0. Deers. Deers. There's a plural of a deer. I think it's deer. Deer, 3. Bunnies, 0. Let's go to, um, you guys want to see where Shrek lives? Any Shrek fans out there? For all you Shrek fans, I found the swamp, aka the bog. Here it is. Beck lives over here somewhere. Oh my gosh, Michael Keaton! How the heck did I forget Michael Keaton? Yeah, the best Batman in my opinion, Michael Keaton, besides Kevin Conroy, the animated guy that did the voice of the animated Batman. Kevin Conroy, rest his soul, amazing, amazing, amazing voice actor. All right. I don't see Shrek. I don't see Donkey. So they're all hanging out with, with, uh, hanging out with Gingy and whoever else. Lord Farquaad. And yeah, and yes, I am a believer. You guys all know that song, right? I'm a believer. All right, all right guys, this is the official venture out. One last try. Edie! Oh no, oh no. Well, we all just have kind words for each other here in this chat, so that's one of the cool things about y'all. Did I just say y'all? About y'all. Oh, we got a bunny sighting! Yes, bunny sighting, guys! I don't know if you see it, there's a bunny straight ahead. OMG, I am so hoppy! I'm gonna walk close. He's probably gonna hop away. I don't want to scare him or chase him, but I don't know if you guys see him or not. Hello, Mr. Bunny! Hi! Oh, did you see him hop away? Thank you, Mr. Bunny. Yay! That, my friends, is a great way to wind up this walk and talk. So, deer 3, bunnies 1. Yay! That was amazing. I'm so happy, or hoppy. There's always some bunny out there that loves you. Remember that. There's some bunny out there who's there to encourage and support you on your journey. Yay! Wow, we have a record amount of people watching. Appreciate y'all watching. If you have, uh, if you like this, give me that old thumbs up. Sorry. Got my sketchbook there. Thumbs up. Um, yeah, I love doing these kinds of quick live streams, walking and talking, whether here or New York City. And I love sketching architecture, loose style, so you could always tune in and watch me do that as well. Jeff says here, bunny, bunny, bunny. Are we luring out the bunnies? Yes, there's a great bunch of people. I agree. I do appreciate every single one of you spending some time with me, whether you're watching, sleeping to my voice, cooking, sewing. Paragliding, I don't know. I do appreciate you spending a few minutes of your precious time with me. And I think on that last note, that last hop, I think we're done for tonight, guys. Um, shout out to everybody who's watching live and commenting. Happy birthday again, Gigi, and Joy, have a slice of tres leches for me. Um, yeah, um, guys, there's a chance I might be live streaming maybe tomorrow or Sunday from NYC. I'm gonna go to MoMA. There's an exhibit there that ends. I want to see before it leaves. So, so you might see me live streaming a little bit either Friday, tomorrow, which is tomorrow, yeah, or Sunday. I'm not sure which day yet. But it'd be cool. And, um, I may pop on later and sketch. I'm not 100% sure, but if so, it'd be around 9:00, 9:30. We'll see. Until we meet again, sketch boldly, live creatively, and embrace imperfection. And I think we're all out of bunnies for the
